I'm planning on shooting a feature on an XL2 next year. In the movie, I need to have a scene where a character watches a news program (which I also shoot). I also need to cut to scenes of the news program (as it directly relates to the story). Do I shoot all of the footage (including the news footage) at 24P (even if I intend to show part of the news footage on an actual TV) or can I do the news footage in 60i and splice it in with 24P?

Just wondering.

always found the best way to learn is to try and do the thing yourself, see what works for you.

I don't know, but I think for news footage, isn't 60i more realistic?

From the peanut gallery -- meaning I have never done any of this, so take it for whatever it is worth -- if your final display mode is 24p, shoot it all 24p. I think you'd be better off to overlay your "news footage" onto the TV screen in post using After Effects or similar software. Trying to make your overall scene AND a TV within the scene that's blasting out 60i BOTH look good sounds like more of a challenge than doing motion tracking in post.

In the end, though, I agree with Martin. If you're going to the tremendous effort to shoot a feature-length movie, do a short test run of any difficult stuff like this that you anticipate enountering. Small price to pay to avoid potentially big headaches later.

And then write a post here about your experience so we can all gain from it, too! ;-)
