Please help me with some information, which I can’t find in the manual.
What is the working distance and what is subject(image) size at minimum focusing distance both at 4,5 mm(wide) and 54 mm(tele)?
Thanks in advance from Denmark

See http://www.hdvinfo.net/articles/sonyhdrfx1/compare.php#og. The minimum focus distance at full wide is 1cm and at near full tele is 80cm.

I need to improve on the FX1/Z1's capability (I need to shoot an eye). Will a close-up lens/filter do the job? Can I will focus and zoom (I've never used one)?

You should be able to get some close-up adapters ( +1, +2, +3 diopters etc.)
They will screw onto the lens and you can screw them into each other: +1 diopter with +2 will give +3 (so simple...) They're not very expensive either.
You will then be able to get closer to your subject and still have the full range of the zoom. You've merely altered the focal range of the lens.

Robin,

Where can I order these diopters? How do they differ from say a 2x screw on Tele-converter?

The minimum focusing distance is closer than practical. One evening I managed to focus on some lint on my UV filter. I checked it several times to make sure it was true.

Century Optics makes a whole set of dipoters. I use the same 72mm one I got for my old XL-1 on my new Z1 camera and it works great. With a #2, you can zoom in on a half a postage stamp from about 18 inches away.

my century optics diopters are the best money i ever spent on my gl-1. i have a close-up of someone getting goose-bumps.. the frame is filled with like 4-5 hair follicles.
