What does XL in this camera series mean anyway?

Very good, can't see anyone topping that which seems to nail it so exactly. The official definition of XL (if it doesn't match yours) must surely suck in comparison. Well done.

Camera model nomenclature and naming conventions are decisions which, like the cameras, are Made In Japan.

The Canon Museum (http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/dv/f_index.html) would tell, if there is a story to tell.

Hey Greg. I kind of thought it meant exchangable lenses too or maybe EXTREMELY LOUD camera with it's markings, that is. If it had a few more lens controls (bands) on the lens, they could call it the Canon Zebra. I've gotta go now, this is getting rediculous.

IT could be about marketing. Maybe it just sounds technical and kind of like the name of a competitor?

Look at car names.

With the exception of of a few European models, the names are just made up.

Interesting tidbit from the Canon Camera Museum regarding the past, circa 1975, when Canon introduced the 512XL Super 8 film camera:

"Eastman Kodak Company announced its XL system in 1971. This system improved part of the camera mechanism to increase the volume of the light reaching the film surface. It also made it possible to shoot under dim light conditions with high-speed film. “XL” stood for “Existing Light.” Canon developed a new XL shutter mechanism with a 220-degree shutter opening and low noise, as well as a new 5x f/1.2 zoom lens, which was considered the highest performance lens, even at the full opening, for the XL system at that time."

X is an unknown factor. L stands for Lens. It covers the unknown factor which can occur when focusing and zooming.

I was going to say "Lens" but that doesn't have an X in it. ;)
