Hello guys,
I recently experienced a problem with my GL2 that gave me lots of trouble.

A year ago, filming a hockey game, the camera turned off for no reason at all. It happened twice during an afternoon. As I was working with a new brand of tapes (cheap ones). I thought it could be the problem.

Two weeks ago, filming a rock show, the same thing happened. But this time the camera auto turned off at least 6-7 times in less than 20 minutes. As I filmed directly on the stage, I thought it could be all the electrical equipment (guitars, amplifiers and spots) that could interfere with the cam.

But now, it did the same thing again last week, and I can find absolutly no reason why.

It's a big problem for me 'cause I use my GL2 for work and if it happen during a one shot shoot, I might get in lots of trouble.

Has anyone experienced this? Please help me, I'm really confused.

Welcome Pascal. Sorry to read of your troubles. This type of problem has been reported occasionally with the GL2 and XL1. The most likely cause is your battery and the battery mount. If the camera loses contact even for a split second with the battery contacts it will shut down. If you can do so, try using a different battery and keep note of the unit in use at the time. Maybe one of your batteries is slightly defective.

Failing that, you'll have to send the camera to Canon service for repair.

I'll keep an eye on the batteries. It is a good guess since I use 3 different brands.

I really hope one particular battery causes the problem.

Hello Pascal,

I had a problem that sounds similar with my XM2. It started with the camera very occasionally shutting down and after a few weeks it was happening all the time. Sometimes it seemed to be related to movement of the camera other times not. It turned out to be a intermittent electrical contact problem in the Main Power switch on the top of the camera.

I solved this problem in my camera by:
1. Turning camera off completely.
2. Removing battery from camera.
3. Exercising the Main Power switch by repeatedly sliding the switch back and forth between CAMERA, OFF and PLAY a few dozen times. (Possibly exercise the Standby Lever between STANDBY and LOCK as well.)
4. Ensuring Main Power switch off.
5. Reattaching battery.
6. Turning camera back on.

I have not had any subsequent power problems since.
