when i try to play a tape in vtr mode there are gray bars and the audio cuts out. i think it might have been jarred. has anyone experniced this kind of problem?

Yes. Sounds like a simple tape head clog to me. Have you run a Sony cleaning tape through the mechanism? Do so and report back.
