View Full Version : Anyone from Orlando, Florida?
Rob Talley February 20th, 2003, 07:32 AM Hello,
By day I'm a data networking engineering manager. I've had a deep interest in video for many years and have dabbled for too long. Last year I began to take things a bit more serious and started building up my capabilities. During that research I was pointed to this forum and have been hanging out absorbing ever since.
Finally worked up the courage to say hello.
I really enjoy capturing simple experiences from all of the various waterfronts we have available in the state and just documenting them via digital still and dv-video. I recently finished an archival project of stock family stuff and ageing vhs footage to DVD. Also converting footage from my older analog HI-8 to DV and now working with my newer DV footage.
In the short time I've been hagin' out as a guest, then a registered user, I have learned so much from these forums. I look at older footage from just 6-months ago and it's obvious my technique is improving somewhat. Well, at least now you can watch it without getting seasick or fall asleep.
Currently I'm using the following tools:
Olympus C3000Z digital still, Canon GL2 for DV, Premier 6.5, and DVDCre8's DVD Complete 2.06 ESD for DVD authoring to a Sony DRU-120A.
Many thanks for such a wealth of knowledge and inspiration.
Cheers,
Rob
Imran Zaidi February 20th, 2003, 09:39 AM Rob,
I'm in Orlando too, and have a GL2 myself. I'm a web developer by day, downtown. If you work around here we should do a lunch to share interests. My email is imran @ theseventhlevel.net -- give me a shout!
Imran.

Elizabeth Williamson July 10th, 2003, 04:51 PM I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a college student from Florida who recently discovered that she has an strong interest in the art of the moving pictures. I don't have any fancy equipment (it's pretty much limited to what my friends and I can borrow; and some consumer-grade equipment that we have). My passion far exceeds my knowledge, but I'm learning fast, and I'm so happy to have found this community of talented people willing to share their knowledge.
And as you can see from my sig, if you're putting on a production in the Gainesville/Orlando area and need some help, just e-mail me. :)
K. Forman July 10th, 2003, 04:58 PM Welcome Elizabeth! You have come to the right place. There are plenty of folks to share their experiences. As far as help, I may be shooting an Indy soon, and I'm not that far from you. I will keep you in mind.
What have you done so far?
Elizabeth Williamson July 10th, 2003, 06:09 PM I haven't done much yet. I've been editing short videos (about 3-5 minutes) using Ulead MediaStudio. I just finished a 6-week film course on the foundations of production, and created two 30-second and one 3-min. short. None of them were very good, but I did learn a lot about how not to shoot video, so I should do better the next time around.
When I return to school (U. of FL), I'm planning to meet up with other student filmmakers to work on some projects.
I appreciate your response, and I look forward to hearing more about your indie project.
K. Forman July 10th, 2003, 06:11 PM Are they teaching you anything about lighting and camera operations?
Elizabeth Williamson July 10th, 2003, 06:27 PM Well, I'm just now starting to get into the film program at UF, but unfortunately they have a more theory-based curriculm then a practical one. I have not been taught anything about cameras or lighting, but I'm looking into getting in one of the production classes this fall. I am also registered in a TV broadcast class, which should be covering those topics.
The foundations of production course I mentioned was taken at U. of Central FL, and did cover lighting/camera operation, but not as in-depth as I would have liked it to be.
Rob Zeigler January 27th, 2004, 10:44 AM Greetings all!
I've made a few posts to the forum already but never really introduced myself. I'm originally from northern Virginia but came down to Orlando, FL to pursue an education in computer animation.
Having accomplished that and after getting familiar with a number of digital 3D and 2D apps, I arrived at my new passion of non-fiction filmmaking and am currently producing a documentary called Fading Legacy, http://www.fadinglegacy.org, with a great crew.
I see a few other people in the Orlando / Clearwater / Melbourne area. Hopefully we can all work together sometime!
These forums are an invaluable source of information for me and I appreciate each and every one of the replies I get from all of you!
"Talk to you later" : )
K. Forman January 27th, 2004, 10:47 AM Hidey Ho neighbor! I'm almost always available, if you should find yourself in need.
Jeff Donald January 27th, 2004, 11:27 AM Welcome Rob, glad to have another Floridian on the boards. I'm just above Clearwater and if I can ever help, just let me know.
Mike Albert August 30th, 2004, 11:46 AM Hello Orlando.
I'm a local filmmaker work on a number of shorts and documentaries. I will also be working on a comedy feature in December up in the panhandle. I've recently left my 9 to 5 at Oracle corporation to devote my full attention to film.
I wanted to get to know some of my peers in the Orlando area. As time permits, I would love to work with some of you. I have a DVX-100A as well as a nice complement of sound equip, lights, editing system etc. My goals was to equip myself to be able to make DV films and docs for a very low production cost.
Drop me an email. Michael@910productions.com
K. Forman August 30th, 2004, 12:33 PM Hey Mike- Welcome to the club :) You'll find a few members from Orlando here, and many more of us scattered around Fla.
Imran Zaidi August 30th, 2004, 12:37 PM Glad to have you on! I live in the area and have that same cam myself. I'll shoot you an email later, but welcome to DVi.
Mike Albert August 30th, 2004, 12:43 PM Thanks for the notes. Give me any suggestions you might have regarding networking opportunities etc. I've been working on my own for awhile as well as with my partner who lives in North Florida, but I want to begin to establish contacts locally.
Imran Zaidi August 30th, 2004, 01:02 PM Come to the DMAC! It's the new filmmaker hangout downtown. There's a coffee shop decorated with filmy stuff, and a digital theater upstairs that shows unique independent film. Every Sunday there's a 'Film Slam' of local filmmakers.

Mike Albert August 31st, 2004, 08:11 AM Thanks for the reminder. I've been planning on getting down there and networking would be an additional plus.
David Bermejo October 26th, 2004, 05:17 PM Is there anyone here from Orlando, Florida?
Mike Moncrief October 26th, 2004, 06:57 PM Hello,
I am in Orange County.. There are quite a few from Central Florida here..
Mike M.
K. Forman October 26th, 2004, 07:02 PM I'm an hour away, in Palm Bay. Hi!
Imran Zaidi October 27th, 2004, 07:19 AM I'm in the downtown area...
Kalmin Fullard October 28th, 2004, 10:20 PM David,
I'm on the eastside...near UCF...
Bob Benkosky November 12th, 2004, 01:14 AM I am in Lake Park.....right near Palm Beach Gardens. That's about 2 hours from you. :(
Chris Metts February 14th, 2005, 06:34 PM Hey,
I'm from the ocoee area only about 25 mins from downtown.
If anyone is doing some filmming around orlando and needs some help let me know. :)
Chris.
Mike Teutsch April 14th, 2005, 09:33 AM Greatings from Port St. Lucie, Florida, which is near Stuart or Ft Pierce. It's great to know there some of you close by! I'm new, but trying to learn as fast as I can. If I can help anyone in any way, please feel free to contact me. I know I can learn much from helping others out. I'm semi-retired and spending the kids inheritance.
Other than fishing, I have never gotten involved with anything that excites me so much as the DV! Well, there may be one other thing, but I too old to chase much now. I just lay down and hope someone trips over me.
I must say that this forum is best organized, most well run, and most informative I have ever found! Thanks to all!
Mike
Charles Towne April 24th, 2005, 03:06 PM I am a nature writer/videographer residing near orlando, just returned from a shoot in the Rocky mountains
charlestowne111@juno.com
Sean Woods April 28th, 2005, 10:04 AM Hi, I'm in the thornton park area downtown running around experimenting with HDV. Fun Stuff.
Imran Zaidi April 28th, 2005, 01:06 PM I wonder if us folks from Orlando should maybe set up a DVi member meet & greet? Seems like there are quite a few of us central floridians lurking around this forum, and we should probably get to know one another - we never know when we might need each others' expertise or help in something.
I met a few of you when I hosted Edward Troxel's Vegas get-together last year - but there's definitely more of you out there!
Just a thought - chime in my local peeps, if you're interested.
Rod Finch April 28th, 2005, 01:15 PM Tampa in the house
David Bermejo April 28th, 2005, 02:01 PM That would be nice to have a get together. It would have to a be a really centralized place though.
Mike Moncrief April 28th, 2005, 06:40 PM Hello,
I am here.. (Orlando) Always looking for others to meet, colaberate with..
Mike Moncrief
K. Forman April 28th, 2005, 06:47 PM How about Calico Jack's on hwy 50? It's pretty central, and I can find it ;)
Imran Zaidi April 28th, 2005, 08:45 PM I live and work downtown, and the meeting with did with Senor Troxel was at my office, which is smack dab in downtown, just a hop off I-4. We could always do something like that again... or there's the DMAC downtown a block from my office - which is the second home for DV filmmakers in town - coffee, free internet, and a digital theater. And it's on the same corner as Maui Jacks, a sports bar type restaurant with some pretty decent food.
If there is interest, what's central to everyone?
Mike Moncrief April 29th, 2005, 06:43 AM Hi all,
It does not matter to me where.. , I work a crazy schedule.. So for me I would try to attend if it falls on a day I happen to have off...
Any others out there interested ??
Mike
K. Forman April 29th, 2005, 07:40 AM I'm interested, but would need to have some advance warning. Weekends would be best. And I tend to have issues with Orlando and it's traffic. Ok... I just have issues ;)
Bob Costa April 29th, 2005, 05:30 PM I would consider driving up to Orlando if it was for more than just socializing. Or if I could synchronize it with another trip up there. It is about 2 hours for me from Venice, but the closest thing to a DV community I have found yet.
K. Forman April 29th, 2005, 05:36 PM Venice is closer to Clearwater, isn't it? There seems to be a breeding ground there for videographers.
Mike Moncrief April 29th, 2005, 05:47 PM Hello,
Maybe everyone should chime in, and list things like
what platform you use ?
what software ?
cameras ?
hobby or work ?
genre you shoot(or want to shoot) ?
etc..
maybe we can find some common ground here..along with the common interest in DV..
I will start:
PC user
Vegas 6,After Effects,Ligtwave 3D,Photshop,DV Rack,DVD Architect, VT3(maybe selling soon)
Ultra, and more..
Just sold my Sony PDX-10, soon to have a HDV Sony FX1 or Z1
I do make some money with it.. But I still love it like a hobby
I have shot everything from corporate videos, documentaries, music videos and on and on..I just want to make quality stuff..
I am also a want to be photographer...
Mike m
K. Forman April 29th, 2005, 06:10 PM I also use a PC, with Premiere, Photoshop, Sound Forge, whatever else I can. I had started Editing on a low/no payment for a Surfing website, then learned video so I could teach THEM how. I sometimes make money doing events, but usually do it to get out of the house for a day or two ;) At this point, I'll shoot or edit ANYTHING... as long as it doesn't involve animals or kids.
Imran Zaidi April 29th, 2005, 08:13 PM Also PC. I use Vegas, a DVX100a, and have a variety of low budget filmmaking tools. I'm a web developer by day, but aside from that I consider myself a writer and director. My most recent work was a short film that won the year end finals of a local film slam; and I'm shopping it around to fests, but it's a tad long which fests don't like. So the next couple I'm in prepro for right now are short as hell. I've been DP on a few as well - one that played at the Palm Beach Int'l. Ultimately, for now, film festivals are my end game.
I'm always looking out for people who want to collaborate and share the burden of making low budget narrative shorts.
Mike Grasso May 9th, 2005, 06:49 PM Hi, I will be in Orlando taking NYFA digital class at MGM. I will be out there for June, July, and August. I will also be looking for a job there, if I find something I will stay. I am looking to move to the Kissimmee area. If you know anybody or have some connections let me know.
Mike Moncrief June 12th, 2005, 06:36 PM Hello,
I am interested in hearing if there are any other Sony FX1 or Z1 owners out there in the Orlando/Central Florida area??
Mike Moncrief
