I saw this on imdb.com:

HDTV -- On Your Phone?

Texas Instruments is expected to announce today (Thursday) that it is developing a new generation of cell phones that will be capable of downloading and showing high-definition TV broadcasts, the New York Times reported today. The sets are expected to hit the market in 2007 but will begin trial testing by 2006.

Wow, you would need an LCD that can display something like 640 dpi (1280x720 on a 2" wide screen) to really do this. Don't you think they just mean it will display a low resolution version of HDTV?

I saw this story yesterday on the local news. Obviously, with TI being based here in Dallas, it got good coverage. They didn't say anything about HD, just the ability to watch TV on your cell phone. The story also said that it would be received via a new transmitting infrastructure and would not be an internet download type of thing. I can imagine however, that it could be made to receive a lower resolution of the current digital OTA signals.

Makes me wonder, just how much more stuff are they going to pack into a cell phone over the next few years.

I have also seen working prototype on the news here in the UK, although they said that it was being trailed in Sweden or somewhere i cant remember, dont expect anything bigger than 340*240 that would be pushing these phones to the max (usualy at 15fps) on such small screens i have tested on my brothers phone a WMV 8 compressed home video at 174*120 at 15fps and looked amazing (NEC 616)
