There is a lot of incorrect and/or misleading information on the Internet about Canon warranty of camcorders. I would like to share what I have learned during the process of trying to buy a GL2.
1. The Canon warranty (1-year parts and labor) is NOT transferrable:
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&keycode=2113&fcategoryid=227&modelid=7512
2. Canon will honor the warranty if you have the sales receipt and the original warranty card that comes in the box. As long as the camcorder is a USA version with a USA warranty, it doesn't matter if the dealer was an authorized Canon dealer or not.
This is according to the California Canon Repair Center (949-753-4200).
There is also a Canon Repair Center in New Jersey (732-521-7007).
3. For non-warranty repairs, there is a minimum charge of $240.00 + sales tax + shipping IF you decide to go ahead with the repair. There is NO charge for an estimate (of course you have to pay shipping).
