Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a field mixer that runs around the $200 range to go along with an AT-897 and DVX100A. I realize that this is on the very low end of the spectrum but it is the best I can do at the moment.

All suggestions are most appreciated.

The Samson MP4/6, M-Audio are both really good for this sort of work, both have reasonably good preamps, and both are battery powered or AC powered. Tapco (Mackie) has a good lil' board, but I've only seen it, not heard it.

The Rolls MX124 has received good reviews, but I have no personal experience with it. It's $180 at B&H. It only puts out 18 volt phantom, but that won't be a problem with your AT897. Something to consider for future mic purchases though.

My only comment on the Rolls (built here in Utah by former DOD founder, Dave DiFrancesco) is that it's noisy even at somewhat low levels. At least the units sent to me for review were. Usually their products are really good for a budget tool. Maybe I just got 2 lemons. Jay Rose really liked them.

Interesting. I think one of those qualities that's very hard to pin down on "budget" items is consistency.

I couldn't seem to find any information on the Samson MP4/6 at B&H. Do you know of a reputable dealer that may carry these?

It's the Samson MixPad 4. I think they also make a 6 but I'm not sure if it's battery powered.
These are available from almost any musical instrument online vendor as well as B&H, some with free shipping. Depends on whether you need to talk with someone live about other items or questions.

Behringer makes a some $100, $200, $300 mixers that are all okay. I've used the Eurorack MX-100 and it worked okay - that's the $100 dollar model. Check out www.behringer.com for more information. Also, www.zzounds.com - they usually have good deals on audio equipment.

The behringer mixers aren't "Field mixers".

I'm sorry to hear about your impression of the Rolls mixer. I was about to buy one to use with lavalier microphones. Have you tested out the PSC Promix 3? That would be my next choice, but it's a little more than I really want to spend right now.

Perhaps not, but they will get the job done for the amount that he is talking about spending.

They're mixers and if you have something to place them on and an A/C power supply i guess they'd work but they're still not Field Mixers and that's what was asked for......

The mixpads are a nice little unit for the money

I just paid $134.95 for mixpad/4 from American Musical Supply. I believe this is about $20 cheaper than B&H.

How do I match multiple mic sources so they blend seamlessly in post? I'm particuarily interested in getting my hands on a wireless system someday but I'm afraid the difference between it and the AT-897 will be quite obvious.
