On default, VLC is set to use hardware YUVtoRGB conversion and Quicktime is set to use DirectX. For both players, default settings are meant for using hardware accelerated conversion.
For those having problems correctly viewing the files on their monitors do the next:
In VLC go to Tools>Preferences>Show settings: All>Video>Output modules>DirectX and deselect Use hardware YUV->RGB conversions.
For Quicktime: go to Edit>Preferences>Quicktime Preferences>Advanced and in Video select Safe mode(GDI only) instead of DirectX. (For those missing MJPEG codec here is the "Enable encoding using legacy codecs" setting too).
