I want to shoot a projest at 2.35:1

What's the best way to do that using the xl1 and lenses short of getting the PS technic and actual anamorphic lenses ?

I was thinking about renting a servo lense. Is there an adaptor that will work?

There's a new anamorphic adapter out, will fit a 72mm thread. This is the front thread on the manual 16x and 14x lenses. That should give you what you want, while shooting in 16:9

To the best of my knowledge you will at least need anamorphic
adapters. Keep in mind that the XL1(s) is not true 16:9 natively.

You could ofcourse also crop if the resolution drop isn't too much
of a problem for you. Rarely is for web/TV output.

Adam Wilt had an article in DV Mag about the Panasonic anamorphic adapter
made for the DVX100A. He said it works on the XL1 too.

It would be interesting to use this adapter with an XL2 shooting in
native 16x9. With the addition of this adapter I wonder what the
aspect ratio would be? Might be pretty cool.

an anamorphic adaptor that converts a 4:3 (= 1.33:1) aspect ratio into a 16:9 (= 1.77:1) aspect ratio stretches the image horizontally by a factor of 1.3333333.... Therefor, if you use such an adaptor while shooting in 16:9 mode you will be getting an aspect ratio of about 2.37:1.

This is damn close to Cinemascope!

Looking at some of the footage the XL2 produces, using an anamorphic
adapter while shooting in 16X9 may be extremely cool.
