Anyone can attend. You have to pay more for the conferences.

FYI: If you sign up on the DV Expo website BEFORE July 7 (https://www.cmpevents.com/DVe4/a.asp?option=B&V=2), the Expo Plus! Pass for the exhibitor booths is free, and the Xtreme Video Fest and the Expo Plus! Pass is only $10.

After July 7 the pass is $75.00 and the Xtreme Video Fest and the Expo Plus! Pass is $90.

I registered for the Expo, but never got any receipt of registration or ticket or anything. How do you get in? Do they just keep a list of names?

I would say the biggest trend is that it is now seen as a possible revenue source by the studios.

Yes and no. Just because a celebrity like Michael Moore has a hit doesn't mean there's a new trend. However, perhaps his success combined with the improving economy will make distributors and exhibitors more receptive.

...and after you've registered, you get in how?...

You should get a pass in the mail.

Or you can print out your online receipt and bring it to the show, they can make a pass for you there.

* You should have received an email with a link to your receipt.

Don't forget "Super Size Me" that came out earlier this year. I agree that just because Michael Moore has come out with two hit documentaries doesn't mean that it is an immediate trend, but the numbers sure are tempting:

Budget: 300,000 - Gross: 9,000,000

This is making a bigger percent return than Spiderman 2 and other crappy summer blockbusters. The initial cost to a studio for a documentary is peanuts compared to the now 90 million dollar average cost. Maybe we will see more of a move towards these new edgy and topical documentaries.

Hi all - I think from talking to some people that there have been mixups with registration - the channel I work for here in Toronto registered as press over a month ago and after receiving initial acknowledgement email saying confirmation of registration would come soon, it never did. We bugged them and they sent an email with a link that resulted in "invalid user id" being displayed. We called again and got finally a direct email from a staff member with confirmation details. So if this is the way it's being going for the press passes...

Hi Chris,

I'll be going into Manhattan on Saturday. Just wanted to remind you that Amtrak goes straight to Penn Station in Manhattan from South Station in Boston. That's how I will be going, why drive when you can sit in business class with a lot of room to move about and watch a DVD while chomping down on a scrumptious cheesburger from the cafe car? Penn Station is within walking distance from the Javitz, so you probably wouldn't need a car once your in town. Easier to deal with cabs than it is with expensive parking. The Acela Express is even faster. When you are in business class, you also get your own AC outlet to plug your laptop into.

Just thought I'd mention that. Make sure you stop by the booth and say hello.

Don, you make the Boston-NYC rail commute sound so attractive that it tempts me to fly to Boston just to take the train to NYC.

Didn't originally see this in my online receipt...

Advance Badge Mailing:
In late June, badges will be mailed to all NY, NJ and CT based registrants who pre-registered by June 18, 2004. Badges for those who pre-register after this date must be collected on-site. International registrants and registrants from states not noted above will need to collect their badges on-site, as they will not be mailed in advance of the event.

...Guess I have to collect my badge on site.

Just curious Chris, what is the main market for documentaries? Is it in the PBS/Discovery/History type channels or something else?

See you at the Expo!

I went to the EXPO today. It was pretty cool. I got to play with the freshly announced XL2. Gorgeous cam. Footage from the cam was fantastic, and had yet to be color corrected. Also learned some valuable time saving techniques for Premiere Pro, and After Effects.

Greg Harris

really, like what kind of techniques? Also did sony have their HD cam their, or did you ask Sony when it should be released?
thanks

Jesse Bekas

The Premiere techniques were mostly little time savers, like holding CTRL when doing moves on the timeline to extract clips and reposition them while allowing them to all snap together instead of getting muddled together, using the preview monitor window to work through each individual edit, and being able to scrub each clip together to see if there is a better spot to make a cut, using the keyboard more, and then color correction tips, like how to use 3 point more efficiently.

I spent almost all day at Panasonic, Canon, and Adobe. I meant to go to Sony today, but I got called in to work. I'll probably go tomorrow. It was my first EXPO and I got so dazzled by the XL2, that I nearly forgot about everything else.

What was interesting at the Pana booth, was that one of the reps told me they plan to have a working Palmcorder size model camcorder next April with solid state recording using a single PCMCIA card, that is housing four 4GB SD cards. I don't know how they can make that affordable, but I can't wait. (and he definitely wasn't talking about something bigger like the DVX100 because he pointed to the PV-DV851 I was holding when he said it)

Wow. Nobody wants to chime in on Pana saying that they're bringing solid state to the Palmcorder line using DV25 AVI codec (non-MPEG4)? I feel like that is a very big deal, and hope somebody else does too...any takers?

great for shooting 5 minute clips, whats it going to cost me to shoot a few hours?

pana needs to make 12 gig memory cards for $3.75 then i will be excited, otherwise its just a novelty

Jesse Bekas

As I stated in my earlier post, it would be using a 16GB PCMCIA card made up of four 4GB SD cards. Seems like they will find an affordable way to do it, otherwise, there is no reason to put that system in a prosumer model.

DMN: Give us an idea, then, the four-gig card, how much will that cost? You're saying they come with the camera, but what if we wanted to buy, say, four more?

English: Honestly, it's a tricky answer to give you right now, because the one-gigabyte chips aren't even on the market.

DMN: So you don't know.

English: Prices fall constantly, so the pricing of that is really going to be known towards the end of the year. But it's certainly going to be several hundred dollars. Certainly, there's no question it's several hundred dollars -- it's not $20, it's not $1000, it's two, three four hundred, something in that region.

again unless the cards will cost around the 5-4 dollar mark count me out, good idea bad market timing

How can Stuart English be expected to predict pricing for a product whose market is constantly in flux. That's a bad interviewer.

Robert Mann Z.
July 17th, 2004, 12:34 AM
chris you have a point, but one thing you can predict is 12 gigs won't be had for less then 10 bucks in 2005

I wanted to check out what was up with the Sony HDV cam and see some of the Vegas 5, and Soundforge/Acid tutorials as well, but I had to work on Thursday and Friday. I never made it to the Sony booth at all. Sorry guys. I'm sure somebody else must have though, right?
