I have three drives and I would like to convert two of the threes which still uses the FAT system. I would like to convert these two to NFTS. I assume it is possible to convert from FAT to NTFS without having to format the drives, right?
If so, what would be the right procedure? THanks you.

All though confusing I'll give it a try. One thing before I give it a go. If I convert the drive my files and document will not be erased, right?

I would back up the important stuff, just to be safe. A bit of a chore, but less work than trying to replace those files...

To convert from Fat to NTFS, go to the command prompt and type "convert e: /FS:NTFS /V" assuming that the drive you want to convert have the e volume letter.

You should not loose any data with this operation, but as Keith said, you could back up your important stuff for safety.

There is a convert command in the command prompt but I don't remember it off hand. With this you can, indeed, convert from FAT/FAT32 to NTFS without any loss of data. You can't go the other way though.

If you back up all your files and don't mind a quick format the easiest way is to do it via: right click on My Computer, choose Manage, then choose disc management. In there you'll see a list of your drives. Right click on the drive you want to change and choose format. In the dialog box that proceeds choose NTFS as the file system. And that's about it. Just did it last night for my Maxtor external one-touch 200gig drive- they come formatted FAT to be compabable with Mac.
