I've just upgraded to the new Macbook Pro, which has a Firewire 800 port rather than the old 400 port. Does anyone know if this carries the same risk of blowing the firewire board on the camera (an HD111) as the 400 - 400 cable had?

Im not sure, but for piece of mind, why not get a DV line protector?

Creative Video Kramer PT-1FW DV Line Protector (http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/public/view_item_cat.php?catalogue_number=kramer_pt-1fw)

we've started using these at work, after one of our cameras got fried

As soon as I get back to civilisation, I will do, Peter. They're a little hard to find in Kabul, though. But thanks for the recommendation.

Here is another option:

FireWire Adapters - FireWire Port Isolator - 6pin (http://www.angledcables.com/firewire-port-isolator--6pi6.html)
