View Full Version : DVD Forum approves HD-DVD-ROM spec Gints Klimanis June 11th, 2004, 01:32 PM http://www.tomshardware.com/hardnews/20040611_123607.html Harrison Murchison June 11th, 2004, 02:38 PM Good news. HDTV though is in dire troubled. Making the hardware affordable requires shipping in volume. Now that we're moving towards two competing strategies in hardware/software things are only more complicated. HD-DVD has the advantage seemingly in costs, plurality of codecs and studio support. Blu Ray has an advantage in size, broadcast support and computer hardware support. Toshiba/NEC are going to need to find some wins in the broadcasting market. If MPEG2 shuts out AVC in broadcasting them it's going to be tough for them to match Blu Ray in recording broadcast streams. AVC is great in efficiency but i'm sure broadcasters are going to be concerned about the power requirements in encoding and decoding AVC. I think the HDTV broadcaster Voom is looking to movie from MPEG2 to WM9 or AVC. More is needed though. |
