View Full Version : Greetings from Great Britain, United Kingdom
Jeff Murray February 5th, 2010, 06:41 AM Thanks Tom, we are carrying on filming. The main areas this comes up is at the Athletics and in the theatre. They often say 'no filming this event without permission'. So upon asking you usually get a nod.
I think you have hit it on the head. It seems to correlate highly with those events where there is a professional in attendance. Nothing against them making a living at all, however for those of us with our own kit and who enjoy making it for ourselves, why can't we?
With regards
Jeff
Manish Pandit February 5th, 2010, 05:21 PM I have been on DVinfo for a couple of years mainly browsing posts, didnt realise there were so many of us from the UK. Greetings guys.
That is how I started learning how to film/edit/ what to buy, never having held a camera in my life before.(I am a consultant doctor in the UK)
Just came back from a successful screening of my first film "Krishna:History or Myth" at the Nehru centre in London. Went very well, more screenings in the UK expected and will invite people from DVinfo who can turn up if in London/Birmingham or wherever the screening is.
Film is being screened around the world sort of spontaneously roughly every 2 weeks.

Andy Wilkinson February 5th, 2010, 05:32 PM Hi Manish,
Not only a lot of us in the UK but it looks like a few of us are doctors too (in my case PhD, not medical stuff, I'll let you guys do the blood and guts stuff!). I think it was you who phoned me up a few months ago asking about 5DMkII or 7D compared to EX3? I see you got a 5DMkII in the end.
Good luck with your film!
Manish Pandit February 5th, 2010, 05:43 PM Hi Andy,
Yes, it was me. Great to hear from you.
Did not buy another 7D, instead held on to the 5D and the EX3, and am waiting for the next few months to see what happens.
We have tied up with a news group in India to try and bring my films to most Indians.
My next film is out in March, in post right now.
Thanks for all the good wishes and good luck.

Colin McDonald February 6th, 2010, 04:00 PM Welcome and that's you on the dvinfobrits list, Manish.
Colin McDonald February 12th, 2010, 02:57 PM And welcome to Adnan Khan as well who introduced himself here http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/these-people-your-neighborhood/472743-good-evening-bristol-sw-england-uk.html
Good evening from Bristol, SW England, UK
Hello to all, just got back from work and realised my account has now been approved by the administrator.
I like cycling, computers, photography and of course video. I am not a 'tech-head' when it comes to video and that probably brings into question why I shoot with a Canon XL-H1. I actually acquired it from a family friend for cheap. I shoot video mainly as a hobby. I know the difference between 25/24p and 50i/60i, video resolution, data rates and that's about it. I am hoping to learn more from the great folk on this forum.
Look forward to continue participating. :)
-Adnan
Adnan Khan February 16th, 2010, 12:25 PM Lol, thank you very much. so many of us UK guys here wow :O
Primoz Lazar February 16th, 2010, 03:38 PM Hello :)
Can anybody of you add me to my MSN to talk about film industry in UK. =)
I am 17 and i wanna go studying in Uk, i am from slovenia :) add me please lazzho@hotmail.com
Best regards and thank you :)
Colin McDonald February 16th, 2010, 03:55 PM Hi Primoz, sorry I don't use MSM myself.
If you'll pardon me, I'll offer some advice - don't refer to the the UK/Britain as "England" because you might start a bigger war than even the Mac or PC diehards could imagine!
Our esteemed Obstreperous Rex runs a very orderly site and I am quite sure he would not wish you to re-ignite our old ethnic conflicts here :-)
Primoz Lazar February 16th, 2010, 04:03 PM I am sory I didnt know :(
I repaired it.. :D
Are you using any other chat program ... :) I realy want to talk with somebody from other country about filming cause I dont have expiriences about foreign countries =)
Chris Soucy February 17th, 2010, 01:08 AM As the UK guys seem to have given you the flick, shame on them, but understandable sort of, may I suggest you start an equally worthy "Continental" thread here?
You seem to have boundless energy and enthusiasm, go for it.
Er, Colin, a word, if I may.
Stop it.
The wars are over. Scotland will eventually be totally independent (not far off now, don't even think about importing the struggle here) and CH and the rest of DVinfo do not give a FF what you think of the current political arrangement in the UK.
My suggestion, one DVinfoer to another - do not use terms like "war" and such like in posts, it's really not necessary and is incredibly intimidating to non English speakers.
Just my PO.
(Oh, I'm a UK citizen, BTW, just in case).
CS
Colin McDonald February 17th, 2010, 02:23 AM Primoz, thanks for that correction! I was mainly joking but it is also just a matter of accuracy - we have folks from all over the UK here, and a few from Britain who live abroad now but have asked to be included on the dvinfobrits list.
I don't use any of the chat programmes myself - I spend far too much time on dvinfo as it is! There is so much to be learned here from other enthusiasts and professionals all over the world.
Perhaps you might want to take up Chris's suggestion of a thread for contributors from Continental Europe, or maybe Twitter / @DVinfo/members (http://twitter.com/DVinfo/members) will help you make personal contact with others here to exchange ideas.
Daniel J. Brant February 18th, 2010, 03:00 PM Hi all! New to the forums- thought I'd introduce myself.
I'm a filmmaker based in Reading, Berkshire and while I do a fair bit of corporate and event work (for myself and as a freelancer), most of my experience is on small-scale fiction. While I can turn my hand to most things, Lighting Cameraman is my most common job title but I'm trying to move more into directing since it's what I love more. I consider myself a storyteller first and foremost and a technician second.
I'm always looking to network, particularly with other local filmmakers, so feel free to say hi! Or drop by my website Enborne River Productions- Main (http://www.enborneriver.co.uk)
Colin McDonald February 18th, 2010, 04:50 PM Welcome, Daniel, as the 370th dvinfoBrit! This is a great site with a very large number of helpful folks ready to give advice and share their experience. There are some very experienced members here based in the UK (and some ex-pats as well) and you will get to know them as you read.
Daniel J. Brant February 19th, 2010, 02:29 AM Cheers for the welcome, Colin. 370th? There's quite a few of us from these isles then...
Colin McDonald February 19th, 2010, 12:40 PM It's about time I reposted as the list has grown a bit since September when I had names of 300 Brits apparently active here on dvinfo. Again, if you know of any inaccuracies or omissions, please let me know. If you would rather not have your name on it for security reasons, colleagues in BBC Wales can arrange to have Cybermen delete you.
Manish Pandit February 26th, 2010, 04:34 AM Thanks Colin for the addition. I somehow always find it difficult to find this thread hence the delay.
Kind Regards

I thought you might be here! Good to see you on here Manish!
Maff Mace March 4th, 2010, 12:23 PM Hi guys, I'm matthew (32), everyone calls me Maff, I'm from Leeds. Always been interested in film making since my older brother used to make films starring me on his cinecamera. I've been a lurker on here for quite some time but decided to join last year. I mainly make home movies with my kids but I've dabbled in music videos and more recently with weddings for people I know.
Tony Fogarty March 7th, 2010, 01:16 PM Hi
I've just discovered this thread after a link from Colin...
I'm Tony. Based in Leeds. I've recently moved into video. I've worked in radio for 20 years, with experience in audio production and web. I now freelance and I'm looking to build my skills. Hello all.
Ben Tutton March 12th, 2010, 07:49 AM Hello to everyone in the UK.
I'm a newcomer to video since the purchase of my 7D just before Christmas. I have been a keen stills photographer for the last few years, and I am enjoying getting my head around the differences between stills and video, especially the getting out and playing with my camera part! (Not so much the waiting for transcodes and renders!)
I've been lurking here for the past few months, but decided it was time to jump in, and join the commmunity.
I'm based in Macclesfield, and my main interests are wildlife photography, and a bit of night/low light too.
Have a peek at my website for a bit of my stills stuff.

See you around.
Colin McDonald March 12th, 2010, 11:06 AM Welcome Ben. I have indeed had a peek at your website - good stuff. Your photos are quite striking. Looking forward to seeing more videos.
Andy Wilkinson March 12th, 2010, 11:47 AM Great website and some superb pics Ben! Welcome!
Paul Bonning-Tyers March 16th, 2010, 04:51 AM Hi all,
Another new member in the UK.
I am a full time pro photographer, and have been watching closely the needs of my customers and the divergence of stills and video. I have decided that now is a good time to start looking at video as an additional service. I have purchased a sony HD1000 and have already got one Wedding video under my belt. I appreciate that some may not be happy and think that i am taking business away from them, but looking at how the industry is moving forward i believe that stills and video will eventually be offered (and expected) as one service. Just look at how many stills cameras shoot video, and how many video cameras take stills. Its still early days, but better to get in at the beginning and not too late.
Hope to learn lots from the forum, and hope i can give back as much.
Cheers
Paul
Colin McDonald March 16th, 2010, 10:45 AM Welcome, Paul. At least you bought a proper camera and are not just using your DSLR :-)
That was a joke BTW folks, flames not required!
We are all one big happy family here really, with a great deal in common and lots of experience to share whatever our route into video.
Craig Palmer March 18th, 2010, 01:39 PM Hi All
Just discovered the UK thread. I am based in Sheffield but spend most of my life in and around London, working mainly corporate stuff with a splattering of on line social media marketing work
Colin McDonald March 18th, 2010, 02:59 PM Welcome, Craig! Many helpful people on this list, including another 380 Brits that I've found.
Claire Buckley March 27th, 2010, 02:55 PM Hi you UK guys. Colin told me to come here. And as I can't resist the words of a handsome, bronzed, athletic...
Can you send me my cheque for £20 now please Colin?
:)
Colin McDonald March 27th, 2010, 03:50 PM And as I can't resist the words of a handsome, bronzed, athletic...
...58 year old hypnotist. :-)
Believe me, you don't want me to snap my fingers!
Claire Buckley March 27th, 2010, 04:05 PM You see that's what happens when you look into the eyes, not around the eyes...
Latest video offering can be seen here on DVInfo. Snap your fingers and you're a frog:

Only just found this thread!
Well i've just moved from Surrey to Oxford, and I film weddings (http://www.fxfilms.co.uk) and corporate (www.fxmedia.co.uk), currently using 2 x XH-A1, and a Canon 7D, and editing on CS4

Richard your location is now changed to Oxford.
Olivier Depaep April 13th, 2010, 02:35 AM Sorry wasn't aware of that. Thanks for letting me know.
Ollie
Colin McDonald April 13th, 2010, 03:08 AM Actually not that long. You were probably added very soon after the last posted update since you don't seem to have been included on that one. I don't know how I missed you before that!
Henry Williams July 5th, 2010, 02:45 AM Colin very kindly directed me here. I'm based in London and seem to know far too little about far too many areas of film-making ;) At the moment I'm working as a script editor and doing corporates/ shorts/ music videos and events on the side.
Really nice to know there are so many of us!
Henry

Martyn Moore March 15th, 2013, 01:00 AM Hello to fellow Brits. I think I'm going to like it here.
It's pretty amazing that Gavin Thomas, who started this thread aged 17, is 26 now. I wonder what he's doing these days.
His most recent (64th) post was in 2006 and I've invited him back to tell us how it's going.
I found this: Gavin Thomas - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/backstreet2015)
And this: Gavin Thomas | LinkedIn (http://www.linkedin.com/pub/gavin-thomas/b/625/6a6)
Let me know if my investigative journalist instincts get a bit too heavy. I just like stories.
Paul Walker May 31st, 2013, 11:29 AM Aha! So this is where I should've posted my hi!
As a born and bred Londoner, I'm a hobbyist who's shot a few short films, music vids etc... although have shot a couple of bits and pieces with pros who've needed a last-second stand-in.
Directors Showreel on Vimeo - my reel (not very good I know but getting there...)
Sue Johnson October 9th, 2013, 11:39 AM Hi Everyone. thought I had said Hi but maybe another forum
I live on the edge of the New Forest in Fordingbridge. That is between Southampton and Salisbury.
I have been taking photos for about 10 years now and recently took a few videos and decided to extend my repertoire.
I have thought of joining a video club - there is one in Southampton and one in Bournemouth. Also Poole Arts College does a short course on video so possibly have a go at that.
I have my Canon camera but also bought the Canon Legria G30. I subscribe to Adobe CC so as you can have a go at any of the software I have been looking at Premier Pro and that also takes you into After Effects. My mind is now totally blown.
this was my first video but it is of my horse so obviously I am particularly besotted with this.

Editing was using Windows Movie Maker.

Andy Wilkinson October 9th, 2013, 02:07 PM Hi Sue, an interest in both horses and cameras... Now that could get expensive! ;-)
Welcome to DVinfo.
Sue Johnson October 11th, 2013, 02:27 AM Thanks Andy. You are so right - horses are very very expensive. I have had them all my life and Argentina was probably the best. I decided that I am too old to carry on riding - dont like to hit the deck - so I used that video in the for sale advert and, quite rightly, she sold immediately. A very lovely girl and very lucky people to have her.
Anyway all my energy is now on photography and also video. At least you can put cameras in the cupboard if you dont feel like using them. :)
Sue
Phil Stanley November 13th, 2013, 02:50 AM I have been a stills shooter for many years and have decided to give Video a try.
It certainly looks fun and introduces a whole different set of skills

David Jenkinson December 1st, 2015, 09:05 AM Hello everyone,
I'm currently working on a voluntary basis for the SonsTrust, a football trust associated with Dumbarton FC, who currently play in the SPFL Championship in Scotland. I shoot footage of games and edit it for the "SonsTV-Dumbarton FC" Youtube channel (www.youtube.com/SonsTVDumbartonFC). I'm an amateur, learning the ropes slowly but surely, using an HVR A1E/DN60, Clipwrap and Final Cut Pro 7 for editing.
I got into video through diving, although filming UW is exceptionally hard, and I've yet to be pleased with what I've shot so far! I'm also experimenting in a small way with timelapse although working full time for the NHS doesn't leave me much time, especially with the SonsTV stuff which eats up the bulk of every Saturday!
Learning loads through reading through the posts on here!
Dave
