Colin McDonald July 1st, 2008, 02:25 PM Slightly delicate point here to do with geography rather than politics.
If anyone on the list who lives in Eire wants their name added to the "Brit list" which I seem to be running, I would be very happy to do this but I don't feel I should do it without being asked. I'll include the names in the next complete list posting

Russell,
You shall go to the ball!
(Sorry I've had a couple of pints while watching Foye's war on DVD).
EDIT: and the names keep being added to Uncle Tom Cobley's list above.

As I'm a Brit who has been living in Dublin for the last 8 or so years I'd be happy to be on the "Brit List", but you're right in how it can be a bit of a delicate issue.
I only started playing with my first camcorder this year, and mostly have been shooting football matches (I'm a Shamrock Rovers fan) and producing highlights reels from the footage. Having found I enjoy getting out and filming I'm stepping up from my ultra-cheap camcorder to a Sony HVR-HD1000, which should hopefully help me learn and grow.
Max Coyne July 2nd, 2008, 05:39 AM I'm a complete newby to this forum, running a small production company from richmond west london. Still shooting SD DVCam for web based work, but that will change at one point.
Hope yopu are all tickerty - boo and having a productive day!

Hello Max and welcome to DVinfo. You've just been added, a couple of posts ago.
? :-)
Colin McDonald July 2nd, 2008, 01:05 PM I can't edit any of the previous posts now so I've had to start yet another list of additions. There must be a better way of doing this!
David Braund London
Michael Connor Durham
Alan Craig Warrington
Dave Robinson Conwy Wales
Ian Savage England
Matthew Stokes Fleet
I make it 82 now. I'll post the lot again when we hit the century or possibly before.

Hi Colin,
I have added everyone to an Excel list (did it for my own benefit originally) - could this be put on site here with a link to it so that others could add themselves? This way you (or anyone else) would not responsible for continual additions.
It would of course mean that others would be responsible for not messing up the list.
I am guessing that the "Data Privacy Act" somehow prevents this although inclusion in the list would be the responsibility of the body adding their details.
Alternatively - I would bet the search field *Country* could be added to the "Find Members" facility in the "Members List" which makes a whole lot more sense in helping find co-workers, friends and neighbours. Of course those not wishing to show up on that might object......and so on we go....
Dave Gosley July 2nd, 2008, 01:36 PM Just did a search using UK in location and 899 came back. A cursory glance showed me that some were UKraine members and no doubt there are going to be others fed back erroneously.

That's a great idea Dave, or rather two great ideas.
How do we take this forward - bring it to the attention of the wranglers?

I suppose there will be others who don't use DVinfo any more. Is there a cut off point for inactivity I wonder? I mean if somebody joined in 2003 and hasn't posted or logged in since would they have been bumped off the list by now?
Dave Gosley July 2nd, 2008, 06:15 PM The way around the issue of missing persons presumed gone after long term communications gaps and listing those who don't want to be listed would be to add a facility for those who do. Example;
The folks over here in the UK who do want to be known, be available for a meet one day, be communicable on the phone perhaps for advice or help and possibly even share work load or projects could enter their details in a register for UK based operators who do want to share their details. The fact it is opt in means that no-one is in it without their approval.
It would be simple enough to organise by extracting data from the members database possibly by inclusion of a tick in your profile that says show me in the results of a search for other members in a geographical location - i.e. UK. No tick means you don't show up in the specific search.
I wouldn't worry about getting any attention to this - big brothers will have been watching every move this string makes...If it makes sense to them I would think they'll adopt it for all members / states and locations, after all the forum is here to enable it's members to help each other.
Colin McDonald July 3rd, 2008, 02:26 PM Trying to upload an Excel file with the 85 Brits so far listed. I haven't tried this before so it may not work first time. Thanks to Dave Gosley for suggestions and sharing his list.
Dave, I worked out how to search the members list and like you found the 899 hits. In addition to those from the UKraine, it also brings up folks from MilwaUKee! There are almost certainly other spurious hits if one can work them out. ( It reminds me of the early days of school internet access, when we were puzzled why the town of Sc***horpe had apparently ceased to exist).
Oops, sorry, forgot this is a family show.
Annie Haycock July 3rd, 2008, 03:27 PM Just tried a search on Wales, and came up with 35 members - though some could have been from New South Wales
Colin McDonald July 3rd, 2008, 03:35 PM Since it appears we have a fair number of folks operating in London, I thought I would ask this just on the off-chance that someone was able to help. It is a bit of an imposition so I will not be too disappointed if it isn't possible.
My daughter is one of the prizewinners in a Bebo.com/Fanta "want it-win it" competition and in addition to winning an iPod Touch, her photo is to be one of those featured on a big screen in Piccadilly Circus. I don't know which building the screen is on, but as I am writing this I can see it on the web cam http://www.camvista.com/england/london/piccadillycircus.php
Her photo is to be displayed "from Monday 7th July for a week" according to Bebo.
Here's the cheeky bit. If anyone happens to be passing and has a phone with a camera, it would be great if they could take a picture of the scene as the webcam in Piccadilly Circus does not enough resolution to see much detail.
The mugshot Bebo is to feature is attached. If anyone can help TIA but I know it's a long shot.
The only possible excuse for posting this is that if anyone in London has a compelling need for free footage of any landmark, famous building or scene in the Glasgow/Central Scotland area, I have an XH-A1 and would try to help.
Dave Gosley July 3rd, 2008, 05:53 PM Damned shame, I was up there filming for two days solid ten days ago - in the Rex cinema just round the corner!! Would have done it just for the heck of it..!
Colin McDonald July 4th, 2008, 05:07 AM Just tried a search on Wales, and came up with 35 members - though some could have been from New South Wales
(I hope that means "bringing Wales together!")
It's hard to decide who to omit, but leaving aside those those whose "last activity" was several years ago (as well as NSW) I came up with this:
Paul Burgess Brecon Wales
David. G Burt Penymynydd, N Wales
Robin Davies-Rollinson Cardiff Wales
David Dwyer Cardiff Wales
Annie Haycock Pembrokeshire
Clive Haydock Caernarfon Wales
Vince Hill Pembrokeshire Wales
Anthony Howe Wales
Owen Hughes Cwmbran Wales
Harley Jones Cardiff Wales
Steve Phillipps Wales
Chris Powell Mid Wales
Bruce Rawlings Cardiff Wales
Dave Robinson Conwy Wales
Mark Rook Aberystwyth Wales
Tim Ward Aberystwyth Wales
Gwynne Williams Usk Wales
It could well be that some of the others are still viewing DVinfo without logging in.
Colin McDonald July 5th, 2008, 05:29 AM A similar search on Scotland produced 81 hits. Leaving aside those those whose "last activity" was several years ago:
Paul Black Scotland
Mark Boggis Glasgow Scotland
Alastair Brown Glasgow Scotland
Scott Brown Aberdeen Scotland
Rikki Bruce Glasgow Scotland
Stuart Burns Dundee Scotland
Alex Calderhead Cumbernauld Scotland
Mark Campbell Dundee,Scotland
David Carter Glasgow Scotland
Scott Cassie Peterhead Scotland
James Collinson Glasgow Scotland
Nicole Dolder Edinburgh Scotland
George Duncan Burghead Scotland
Christopher Dunne Edinburgh Scotland
John Estcourt Ayrshire Scotland
Steve Garvie Fife Scotland
Jeff Goddard Perth Scotland
David Graham Glasgow Scotland
Andy Graham Lanark Scotland
Henry Gray Selkirk Scotland
Duncan Grieve Glasgow Scotland
Derek Grogan Larbert Scotland
Roddy Horsfall Glasgow Scotland
Kathleen Little Glasgow Scotland
Peter Mackay Scotland
Scott MacKenzie Glasgow Scotland
Gary Masson Aberdeen Scotland
Colin McCaffery Aberdeenshire Scotland
Colin McDonald Glasgow Scotland
Allen McLaughlin Paisley Scotland
John McPaul Inverclyde Scotland
Stewart Menelaws Scotland
John Millar Scotland
David Miller Edinburgh Scotland
Ross Milligan Scotland
Tom Park Glasgow Scotland
Eric A Robinson Edinburgh Scotland
Martin D. Smith Dundee Scotland
John Steele Glasgow Scotland
Jennie Stenhouse Glasgow Scotland
Martin Trotter Scotland
Lenny Warren Glasgow Scotland
Sandy Watt Glasgow Scotland
Ian Wright Edinburgh Scotland
Keith Yuill Scotland
Of course, not everyone may have used Scotland in their location. I've included some from Edinburgh UK and Glasgow UK but have neglected to search for Auchenshuggle UK or Auchtermuchty UK and the like.
As with the list of DVinfo users located in Wales, it could well be that some of the others not included above are still viewing DVinfo without logging in.
Annie Haycock July 5th, 2008, 01:07 PM There is at least one other from Wales that seems to have evaded your list - and I only remember him because we happened to meet one evening. And his last post was only a few months ago.
I haven't seen Wales spelt Chymru before - usually it is Cymru (pronounced Cumry for those who are unfamiliar with the Welsh language) and mutating to Gymru depending on the preceding word. I don't speak Welsh, beyond a simple Boreda, and Nosdar (good day and goodnight)

Sorry about that Annie - do you have any information on who it is? I might just have missed him when going through the list brought up by searching under Wales.

I'll confess - I cheated. I don't speak Welsh either, though I'm getting better at reading notices, road signs menus and the like now after coming to Wales on holiday every year for a while now. I am hopeless at pronouncing Welsh. I was looking for something else on Google and came across this: http://croesoproject.org/
Martin Mayer July 5th, 2008, 02:07 PM Should I be on that Excel list? Should I be worried if I'm not??
Colin McDonald July 5th, 2008, 02:24 PM Should I be on that Excel list? Should I be worried if I'm not??
You should have been on it; now you are the 175th Brit on the list. Since the weather's been so awful here, I've been going through the list of hits from searching under "England" (which wouldn't have found you) but you have posted recently and I should have picked it up from that.
No sinister motive here, just inefficiency on my part.
When I've been through all 228 hits I'll post a list for "England".
Annie Haycock July 5th, 2008, 03:01 PM Sorry about that Annie - do you have any information on who it is? I might just have missed him when going through the list brought up by searching under Wales.
Sorry, I checked his name then didn't include it! It's Andrew Davies, and his profile says he's from Wales, and could be the same as Andy Davies, also from Wales and with a phone number (from his website) that suggests he is from the same area. No posts from the latter member for a while.

I've put Andrew on now (he's been on DVinfo today); do you think I should add Andy as well?
Colin McDonald July 5th, 2008, 05:24 PM Same story as for the Welsh and Scottish lists: this is a result of a search of the members list for "England". I've removed those those whose "last activity" was several years ago though some may still be browsing without logging in. I've also included others picked up from recent posts, plus returns for "London UK" but have still not searched through all the hits for "UK."

Chris Soucy July 6th, 2008, 01:07 AM Not to put a downer on your Hurculean efforts (as they truly are, I'm absolutely stunned by your thoroughness) but is there something a tad anal about this, considering CH is introduceing some sort of (as yet, revealed but unexplained) regional codes?
Maybe this is the time to ask the big Q of CH?
How's they gonna work and what will you be able to do?
One important thing I would suggest to anyone on your amazing list:
Having been a UK resident for many (many) years, "South East" is not a proper area code for posters.
Either is "England"
Either is "UK"
Either is "NW England" (or any other of the possibilities)
Either is "London"
Either is "County" (take your pick)
Either is "IoM"
In short, guys and guyesses, I'm not asking for street names and numbers, but you all know how it works there, a county (without the "R") can be a darn big place.
London is gigantic.
The "South East" is bloody humungous. (and so are any of the other variants).
So, hit that "Contact Us" button at the bottom of your screen and update your address details.
The more people know about other people (within reason) the better, and when it comes to locations in the UK, invaluable.
Colin, keep up the good work, but do ask CH what gives with the regional codes yourself.
CS
Andy Wilkinson July 6th, 2008, 02:08 AM Hi Chris,
Just one comment. I'm always a bit careful of giving too much location information away, especially when I list all my expensive gear in my profile. Anyone, (ANYONE!!!) can access this information and then a quick web search of the UK electoral role and your address and sometimes even telephone number are in their dirty thieving hands. I'm ex-directory but I know it's still possible. Then it's just a quick call to ensure no one's in, a broken window and the stuff is theirs. That's why I just list "Cambridgeshire" now (but was slightly concerned to see my location a bit more specific on a version of this list a few days ago). Once I posted my location, then had second thoughts but then I could not edit that post to remove that information so it's eventually appeared on Colin's otherwise excellent list. Until this is remedied I've cleared my profile.
And to the thieves. I do have a fully monitored, very good house alarm, good watchful neighbours and live close to the local Police station....my huge dog is also an asset. And if you get past that lot there will be another unpleasant surprise awaiting you that will remain secret.
One of my video buddies found me by personal message on this site. After a bit of e-mail I satisfied myself he's OK...... then over many, many pints in the pub later (not all on the same night but over many many nights!) we talked endlessly about our video interests/stuff we both want to do in the future .....and now we are working together on some of this stuff and having great fun!
So bottom line is, in the spirit if this thread, why not try and meet up with someone in your own area and see if it works for you? We find that 2 people, and sometimes there's 3 of us - even better, bounce shot and editing ideas off each other raising the quality of our work to new heights. It also helps to have someone to lug the gear round with you/watch the camera while you go get a sandwich/coffee/go have a slash (that's slang for going to the restroom by the way) etc. too! And multi-cam shoots give you so much more creative power in editing.

Andy,
I'm so sorry. As soon as I saw this post I edited the list I posted and the Excel attachment to remove the extra detail. I'm inclined to agree with your views and I should have thought this one out a bit better. I hope there's no harm done.
Annie Haycock July 6th, 2008, 02:51 AM Personally, I don't have any problem with giving my place as a county, but I do think members should have the right to choose whether they give a county or a country as their location.
Likewise there is no obligation to list the equipment you use, but it is still helpful for people to see what you are using when posting on a forum that is not specifically for that equipment eg UWOL, or weddings etc.
BTW I'm curious to see that I am listed under England as well!!
Bill Thesken July 6th, 2008, 03:13 AM Tough question you got going here, had me thinking to pull myself out of DV info.net
Pretty cool though discussing, and searching details of the business with all types who know the goods.
I need the info now. Books are good but this is evolving, every day, every minute.
Security is key. Locks, monitors, insurance, all necessary.
Dogs, neighbors, spent shotgun shells from target practice at the doorstep, good deterence.
I have some ancestors from Scotland and the Island of Mull so greetings!
Andy Wilkinson July 6th, 2008, 03:27 AM "Spent shotgun shells from target practice at the doorstep"......Now, Bill, that would get me locked up in no time in the UK!!!
Colin, thanks for updating your lists - and no harm done - but you see the issue now.
I think county (or big city name) is as close as one would want to go....but as Annie said it's really up to the individual member how they want it. And, BTW Annie, Pembrokeshire is about as near to England as one can get in Wales culturally, but not geographically! Then there are all the legal implications we have over this list and it's management, storage, distribution, deletion (due to our Data Protection Act). You don't want someone trying to sue you when all you were trying to do was facilitate interaction amongst us (mostly non-thieving) Brits!
Shame but that's the way it is - especially since the crime/burgulary rate will climb steeply now we're heading for a deep recession so let's not make it too easy for the ^&%$$£"&^.
Bill Thesken July 6th, 2008, 03:41 AM 2 islanders, opposite side of the globe, having a talk over a pint, good stuff
Bill Thesken July 6th, 2008, 03:44 AM Holy Cow, it took 25 posts to go from New Boot to Regular Crew, now what about the surfing video crew in the UK?
Annie Haycock July 6th, 2008, 03:52 AM Bill
And then you become a major player at 200 posts - as I happened to me last night.
Andy
Yes, Little England beyond Wales where the main excuse I have for not learning Welsh is that hardly anyone here knows speaks it, so it would be hard to practise.

A good idea. I'm 95% shooting stills but looking to move into DV. If anyone in the north east of England is stuck for a hand, I'd be happy to work for food to gain experience of DV worksflows / environments, so feel free to PM me.
Website showing my stills work, nearing completion here:

Chris Soucy July 6th, 2008, 05:19 AM And Andy, I think you're pretty safe with Cambridgeshire.
I forgot the paranoia about crime in the UK (strange, only been out of the place less than 3 years and it seems a million miles and a century ago).
We currently live in a hamlet out of town, don't need to lock cars, doors or anything else.
Bit of a change from Tottenham, North London, where an open door would have any and all contents nicked in less time than a blink, or even sooner.
Wasn't expecting anyone to give the thieves an open book, just to make their geopgraphical locations a bit clearer to other DVinfo - ers.
Makes suggestions a bit easier and meeting up heaps so, is my guess.
Anyway, it was just a suggestion, not a command, so do what you wish.
Annie:
Hey, the UK owns you, stop gripeing! And who wants to speak Welsh anyway?
Bill:
Er, spent shotgun shells at the door? Sounds like a lot of country places here.
Rabbits, I'm told.
My question: Who sold the rabbits shotguns?
CS
Andy Wilkinson July 6th, 2008, 05:29 AM yeah, and who taught them to shoot at human's front doors point blank range!!!
Colin McDonald July 6th, 2008, 07:03 AM BTW I'm curious to see that I am listed under England as well!!
Fixed now. It was because I didn't add "Wales" to Pembrokeshire and the spreadsheet (like most things in Britain) assumes everything is English unless told otherwise :-)
Colin McDonald July 8th, 2008, 08:22 AM ...Her photo is to be displayed "from Monday 7th July for a week" according to Bebo.

Since I know of at least one person who has said they would try to help, I need to let folks know that there has been a technical hitch. My daughter just got this from the Bebo/Fanta people:
Unfortunately, there were some delays in production, you're face will now be up in lights on the Piccadilly sign from Monday 14th July until Sunday 20th.
Hope you enjoy and sorry for any inconvenience.
The Fanta Crew
Sorry about all this.
Colin McDonald September 16th, 2008, 12:22 PM Welcome to Steve Pope who brings the number of active Brits I have found to 300. Some names have been removed from earlier versions due to information received about them being no longer active.
Please post if you have any further news or wish some details removed (or want to go "ex -directory" altogether!)
Corey Lawson September 16th, 2008, 05:12 PM Hi there Colin, I'm in London, so you can add me to your list!

Done, Corey, but I don't think it's going to get you much work :-)
Dom Foulsham September 29th, 2008, 04:03 AM It seems rude not to say hello to fellow Brits.
I am mostly based in London. Currently filming industry colleagues / professionals for a national education and training website at www dot uk film net dot org which is partly funded by the UKFilm Council and supported by Skillset, the BBC and the BFI.
Would love to hear from specialists / experts willing to donate a little time to "piece to cameras" or allowing "on location" "how to's" to help young film makers learn the ropes. (Some small expenses can be covered)
Particularly interested in short film makers, DOPs, those using DOF adapters and Steadicam/glidecams.
I'll post news as we go. Site is currently being built behind the link above :)
Tom Hardwick September 29th, 2008, 04:17 AM Something odd about that website address Dom unless it has no space between UK and film and net. Then the site doesn't open up.
But I might help your cause in teaching? I write a technical column for every issue of Film and Video Maker mag.

Hi folks - take the spaces out and it works.
Not sure why you would want to disguise it - while promoting it - but to be polite I have made it clearer without making it machine readable; http://www . ukfilmnet . org
Kind regards

Nick Wilcox-Brown November 21st, 2008, 04:03 PM Hello All,
Just found the thread (belatedly). I'm based west of Bristol. Nice and quiet around here.
I'm working with and XH-A1, EOS-5D mkII and lots of stills gear (Phase One / Canon / Alpa)
There was talk in earlier posts about good dealers - I would wholeheartedly recommend Simon Beers's videogear.co.uk - helpful, friendly and they don't sting you on delivery like most.
Hope to meet some of you one day.
Nick.
Paul Kellett November 22nd, 2008, 06:55 AM Hi Nick.
Welcome aboard, you've joined the right forum.
I'm from Bristol also, Hanham.
Whereabouts are you.
Paul.
Nick Wilcox-Brown November 22nd, 2008, 08:09 AM Hi Paul,
Thanks for the welcome. I'm based at Redhill (quiet side of the airport), but I have an office/studio at Blagdon.
I've been sort of lurking for a while, but not really made much of a contribution.
Feel free to give me a call and drop by (details on my web site) for a coffee / drink.
Nick.
Paul Kellett November 22nd, 2008, 09:34 AM Nick that'd be cool.
Nice website, cracking pictures.
What sort of video do you shoot/ want to shoot ?
You should put your website name as your signature so it shows below your postings.
Paul.
