I'm looking for various opinions about the above camera. There was a "garage" sale at a reputable video rental place in Toronto.
They were selling the panasonic AG DP800 for $1800 CDN. In case anyone isn't familiar with this camera, it is S-VHS 3 CCD (1/2") and digitally renders onto analogue.

Should I get it? One of the technicians said that they were selling it because people wanted the newest things so this had fell to the way side. How does the image compare to other "professional" cameras that are broadcast quality. I don't think it would be hard to find an editing house that couldn't use S-VHS.

I would use this camera for interviews, and eventually get a 3 ccd camera (probably the GL1) for more action shots (ie-night club shots, etc.)

I'd appreciate anyones insight on this matter, as there is a time frame before the cameras aren't for sale anymore.

Analog is analog and subject to all the limitations of an analog format. The list includes problems with dropouts, lower S/N ratio, audio not CD quality, must edit non linear or problems with mult generational loss and I'm sure i left out a few. I believe the 800 was introduced in '95 or '96. So basically it's older than the XL1. A used GL1 or Sony VX1000 might be a better choice. If it was a rental camera, it has probably seen better days. Any warranty? Maybe something to negotiate.

Overall a wise choice, in my opinion. Older equipment and rental units are not always good economic choices.

As usual I must agree wholeheartedly with Jeff. The Pana 800 was a fine camcorder *in its day.* That day has gone. We are living in a DV world now. Don't look back. The PD150 is an excellent choice.
