Today, we completed qualification of Avid NewsCutter Adrenaline and Media Composer Adrenaline on Windows XP. we expect to qualify Media Composer on the Mac shortly.

When clips are recorded to FireStore products in the "Avid OMF" DTE file format, it is possible to use the files instantly in the Avid timeline.

In addition to NewsCutter and Media Composer, FireStore with DTE Technology also supports Xpress DV and Xpress Pro on Mac and PC.

Any idea when this software will be available for Mac OSX??

Hello Kalyn,

Currently FireStore DV Conversion Suite is available for Windows 98/ME/2000/NT only. Development continues on DV Conversion Suite, and we are focusing on new features such as additional file format support.

We have benchmarked FireStore DV File Converter running under Virtual PC 6.1 on a 1G Powerbook (OS 10.2.3) and find that it works well and converts at roughly 2X realtime. For example, a 10 minute video clip would take 20 minutes to convert.

Thank you for your interest in our products, we will contiinue to evaluate your suggestion.

it does optical flow calculations, I hope they add a 24fps converter. I can't see buying a camera when the one I have is superior the the DVX100.

I have a Pannasonic DVCPro25

I'd like to see how it stacks up against Vegas, Twixtor, and the RealViz software and for After Effects users Continuum Pro.

FOCUS Enhancements Showcases Latest FireStore Direct To Edit Technology at NAB
Wednesday April 14, 2:37 pm ET

Integrates Four New File Formats: HDV, MXF, 24p and Pinnacle's Liquid Edition and Vortex

CAMPBELL, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 14, 2004--FOCUS Enhancements Inc. (Nasdaq:FCSE - News), a worldwide leader in video production and conversion technology, today announced that it will demonstrate four new file formats for the company's Direct To Edit (DTE) Technology at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) tradeshow in Las Vegas, April 19th-22nd at five booths, including its own, booth number SL3501.

HDV -- As a new supporter of the high-definition video (HDV) forum established by Canon, Sharp, Sony and JVC in September 2003, FOCUS Enhancements will showcase HDV support on the FireStore platform using a working model to record and play 720p and 1080i MPEG-2 streams.

MXF -- The company will demonstrate Media Exchange Format (MXF) file transfer capability by recording on a FireStore FS-3 with prototype software and importing into Snell & Wilcox's MXF Desktop application. FOCUS Enhancements intends to integrate the open industry and platform-independent MXF format into future FireStore products as non-linear edit (NLE) manufacturers migrate to this evolving format.

24p QuickTime and 24p AVI Type 2 -- With the popularity of the 24p DV format, FOCUS Enhancements has added 24p support to QuickTime and AVI Type-2 DTE formats to FireStore, which will enable users of camcorders such as the Panasonic AG-DVX100A to access DTE Technology within native 24p NLE applications, including Apple Final Cut Pro and Sony Vegas Video. This will be demonstrated on a FireStore FS-3 with prototype software.

Pinnacle Liquid Edition and Vortex native file formats -- FOCUS Enhancements has in beta software enabling FireStore DR-DV5000 and FS-3 to support for Pinnacle's Liquid Edition DV editing products and Vortex News solutions.

Matt McEwen, product manager for FOCUS Enhancements, stated, "The ability to constantly adapt DTE Technology to the changing needs of the digital video market has always been a primary competitive advantage for FireStore and other partner products featuring our technology. Demonstrating four of the newest file formats in the professional video market illustrates FOCUS Enhancements commitment to continually advance video technology."

Ongoing demos will be held at the FOCUS Enhancements booth #SL3501, the JVC Professional booth #C4728, the Avid Developer Pavilion booth #SL5260M, the Canon booth #SU9649, and the Miranda booth #SU10129, during the NAB tradeshow in Las Vegas April 19-22, 2004.

Hi Rob,

Sorry for the late reply. Been trying to get back on track since NAB.

Pinnacle Liquid Edition support is expected in an upcoming release and will be available as a free download from the Focus website for FireStore FS-3 and DR-DV5000 owners.

24p support of QuickTime and AVI2 is also expected in an upcoming release and will be available as a free download for FS-3 owners.

MXF and HDV support were essentially working technology demonstrations on FireStore hardware. Stay tuned to the Focus website for information regarding support of these formats in FireStore products.

Hope that helps,

Hello,

Existing FS-3 and DR-DV5000 owners can download the latest 1.2 firmware version for free from the Focus website. 1.2 adds new features such as Scene Marking, Loop Record and DV Bypass. We have also improved overall system performance. You can read more at: http://www.focusinfo.com/products/firestore/fs-3.html

The new firmware version will also be loaded on all new unit shipments.

Best regards,

Hi Bankim,

The new version 1.2 firmware brings a few new features...

1. Scene Marking - It is now possible to mark scenes while you are shooting or playing back to up to ten, pre-named folders on disk. This allows for easy access to particular clips when it is time to edit. A lot of NLE systems will let you import an entire folder of clips to the bin for easy clip management.

2. Loop Record - This is similar to the current Retro Disk feature, where it is possible to loop record video to available disk drive space. This is useful for security and analysis applications.

3. DV Bypass - This is specific to DR-DV5000 users who use the JVC GY-DV5000 camcorder where the camcorder has been modified for 52-pin operation. This feature allows the camcorder to connect to external devices such as NLE systems through FireStore's DV I/O port.

4. Overall System Performance Enhancement - We have enhanced both the record and playback engines in FS-3 and DR-DV5000 for increased responsiveness.

For more detail, check out:
http://www.focusinfo.com/products/firestore/fs1_2firmware.html

This is a free upgrade for existing FS-3 and DR-DV5000 owners. To upgrade firmware on one of these units, simply download the software update from the Focus support site, copy it to a FireWire disk drive, connect the drive to FireStore and select OS Upgrade from the Setup menu.

Hi,

Many people have asked how to merge the 2GB files that FireStore creates into one, single clip when the drive is being used on an edit system.

The FireStore DV Conversion Suite software allows you to merge multiple clips of any DV file format into a single file.

College Athletic Programs Select FireStore Technology to Streamline Video Production and Analysis

Florida State University, Clemson University and The University of Tulsa choose DTE Technology

CAMPBELL, CA, – August 04, 2004 – FOCUS Enhancements Inc. (NASDAQ SC: FCSE), a worldwide leader in video production and conversion technology, today announced that some of the nation’s largest athletic programs have selected FireStore FS-3 or DR-DV5000 Camera-Mount Direct To Edit (DTE) disk recorders for video production and analysis tasks. Florida State University, Clemson University and The University of Tulsa are among the group of athletic programs to choose FireStore as their preferred tapeless technology based on its compatibility with a large number of editing and analysis packages, as well as its ability to eliminate the time-consuming capture process.

“DTE Technology allows athletic video coordinators to start editing minutes after shooting is complete. The coaching staffs can then quickly analyze plays to the benefit of the athletes,” said Joe Walsh, National Sports Sales Manager for FOCUS Enhancements. “We are pleased that college football’s biggest names are choosing Focus Enhancements FireStore FS-3 and DR-DV5000 with DTE Technology.”

“With FireStore FS-3 we can quickly and easily edit our football highlights packages in a fraction of the time it used to take us,” said Mark Rodin, program manager for Florida State Universities’ Seminole Productions. “The time saved has allowed us to spend more time creating and editing a better highlights package.”

DTE Technology is FOCUS Enhancements’ unique proprietary recording process that enables the recording of video, audio, and time code directly to removable, FireWire disk drives in non-linear editing (NLE) native file formats. This eliminates the need to capture, transfer, or convert clips prior to editing. Formats include DV-OMF for Avid Xpress DV, QuickTime for Apple Final Cut, AVI 2 for Adobe Premiere, Pinnacle AVI, Canopus AVI, Matrox AVI, and many others.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question...

We are going to purchase a DVX100A camera. Is the FS-3 okay to use with it, or should we purchase the FS-4 when it becomes available?

I'll need to shoot footage before the FS-4's release in December.

In the next year, we will also purchase a DVCPro camera. My hunch is to purchase the FS-3 for now, and then purchase the FS-4 in December. That way we'll have both cameras covered.

Matt McEwen
August 26th, 2004, 09:14 AM
Hi John,

You can use the FS-3 with the DVX-100A. You will have to power the FS-3 using an Anton/Bauer, V-Mount or NP battery (or you could use something like a 14V Bescor with a 4-pin connector). The upcoming version 1.3 firmware (now in beta) for the FS-3 will also support 24p QuickTime and AVI Type 2 when the DVX is set to Advanced 24p mode. The FS-4 will also have this feature.

Hope this helps,

Matt McEwen

I just found this part of the thread so if you dont mind I reposted my message here is it seems a much better place to be seen.

"Matt McEwen (or anyone else that can answer my questions)-
Is the FS-4 able to handle higher bit rate streams like ones from DVCPro cameras? Also what is the maximum bit rate the FS-4 can consistantly handle without any problems recording? Can the stream be a none standard format (other than .DV, .MOV, .AVI) and still record it? Thanks."

Brett Erskine
September 23rd, 2004, 03:26 AM
Also for higher bitrate video formats we may need larger hard drives than 80G. Do you plan on giving the option to swap out the internal hard drives and make them upgradeable to large capacities? If not what physical size/type of drive are you using in your product so the more adventurous DIYers can attempt to swap out the drives themselves and still use your great interface - making it possible to suit their special needs. Thanks.

-Brett

Hi Brett,

As was answered by Don Berube elsewhere, the FS-4 only records 25Mb/s DV currently.

The drive used in the FS-4 will be a 5400RPM Hitachi TravelStar. We do not recommend changing the drive on FS-4 and it will void the warranty. The main reason is that we cannot guarantee the performance of drives other than the Hitachi TravelStar. We have seen some drives that were less than optimal based on their thermal and shock performance. I expect as capacities increase on the TravelStar line, we will probably add them to the line-up.

Hope that helps,

Matt McEwen

FOCUS Enhancements Adds Pinnacle Liquid Edition, Miranda and 24p Support to DTE Technology

Version 1.3 Software Provides Increased Integration for FireStore Customers

CAMPBELL, Calif., – September 29, 2004 – FOCUS Enhancements Inc., a worldwide leader in video production and conversion technology, today announced the immediate availability of the FireStore DR-DV5000 and FireStore FS-3 version 1.3 software.

Version 1.3 adds:

• Direct To Edit (DTE) Technology support for the Pinnacle Liquid Edition and other Pinnacle AVI based applications.
• Control support for HDCAM, DVCProHD, Digital Betacam, Betacam SX, MPEG IMX and DVCPro50 camcorders when combined with Miranda’s camera-mounted DVC-100 and DVC-800 series converters. These camcorders are commonly used for broadcast news acquisition, professional sports analysis, television, and feature film production.
• Direct To Edit (DTE) Technology support for 24p QuickTime and 24p AVI Type 2 Direct To Edit clips (FS-3 only) when used with a camcorder such as a Canon XL2 or Panasonic AG-DVX-100.

The addition of the new formats to DTE Technology increases the number of supported native NLE file formats to ten, therefore further extending DTE Technology as the leading and most comprehensive disk recording system. Pinnacle AVI, 24p QuickTime and 24p AVI Type 2 join RawDV, AVI Type 1, AVI Type 2, Matrox AVI, Canopus AVI, QuickTime and Avid OMF in the existing DTE Technology file format lineup.

“We are very pleased that the features introduced in version 1.3 software allows more customers to utilize FireStore technology in a variety of different applications,” said Matt McEwen, product manager for FOCUS Enhancements. “Pinnacle Liquid Edition support was in great demand from FireStore customers such as KRCG-TV in Jefferson City, Missouri while support for 24p has pleased our independent film and corporate customers. In addition, FireStore FS-3 operating with the Miranda converters now supports camcorders with SDI or HD-SDI digital interfaces.”

“We have had many requests from cameramen and directors of photography who would like to perform DV disk recording using Miranda’s DVC-100 / DVC-800 camera-mounted interfaces,” said Gilbert Besnard, director of product development at Miranda Technologies Inc. “FOCUS Enhancement’s FireStore products combined with the DVC-100 / DVC-800 represent a clever solution that enhances Electronic Acquisition workflow, and we are pleased to recommend such a well integrated solution.”

I have an MX4 mixer that I have been testing. Coming from 3 Sony VX2100 cameras through 100 feet of S Video cable into the MX4, the picture looks really good. This is in part to the filtering, and partly as a result or the 10 bit digitizer. After talking with Focus and getting to know the product I have two feature that I have tested that I like, and would like to present in this post.

1. The firmware can be upgraded using the ethernet interface. This means that for the life of the product it will continue to improve with software upgrades that add features. As an early adopter, I was able to speak with the guys at Focus who could not make promises, but seemed pretty open to ideas for possible features in the future. This seems like a good way to keep the product current with the market.

2. You can import and use jpeg images. Today I imported some images and was easily able to tranisition (700 choices) from live video, to an image, back to live video, and back to a different image. I also had the image appear in the PIP window.

There are a few features that will be coming out in the next three or four weeks that I am looking forward to testing, but right now I feel comfortable stating the following: The people I spoke with were positive and helpful, the video quality was good enough for a dvd shown on a big screen TV after 100 ft of S-cable, and the upgradability and video store make this unit something special.

I am taking the S-video output into a Canopus A/D and saving the digital video on an FS-1. I also did a test where I came out of the cameras 1394 port and into the canopus D/A and into the MX4. This works well, so if I ever have a long enough run were I need the digital signal and digital repeaters, there is a viable solution. I recognize that running digital the whole way would optimize the signal quality, but this solution is a lot less costly and is providing results that would be difficult to distiguish from my all digital work flow. Not for a wedding, but seminars, sporting events, churches, dance recitals, etc,... it seems pretty good for the cost vs time savings.

FireStore FS-4 HD Portable DTE Recorder Announcement

FOCUS Enhancements to Unveil Industry's First High Definition Portable DTE Recorder

Featuring Direct To Edit(TM) Technology, FireStore FS-4 HD Maintains a Pure HD Signal From Acquisition and Editing to Distribution and Broadcast

CAMPBELL, CA--(MARKET WIRE)--Mar 14, 2005 -- FOCUS Enhancements Inc. (NasdaqSC:FCSE - News), a worldwide leader in video production and conversion technology, today announced it will demonstrate its new FireStore FS-4 HD and FS-4Pro HD High Definition (HD) Portable Direct To Edit(TM) (DTE) recorders at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention in Las Vegas from April 18th to 21st (Booth SL505, SL4255E).

The much-anticipated DV FireStore FS-4 is available now, and the FireStore FS-4Pro is expected to ship later this month. As the current FireStore models are upgradeable to HD, customers who purchase FS-4 and FS-4Pro on or before April 30, 2005 will be offered a special $99 (normally $299) software upgrade coupon to capitalize upon full HD functionality.

HD is quickly emerging as the standard for video, with accelerating growth in the amount of footage shot and broadcast in HD format. In addition to the current feature set and DV25 capabilities of the existing portable DTE recorders, FireStore will now record pure HD streams via FireWire from leading video products including Sony's HDV and JVC's HD camcorders and decks. FireStore then connects directly to a Mac/PC notebook or desktop, allowing video professionals to edit content directly from the FS-4 -- maintaining an HD format throughout the entire production process from capture and editing to distribution. The new FireStore is ideal for all HD-driven field applications including sporting, news, and live events.

"HD represents an exciting, new market opportunity in video distribution, with HD TVs and displays wildly preferred over older analog products," said Matt McEwen, product manager for FOCUS Enhancements. "New digital capture, editing and broadcast solutions will be the critical enabler as the proliferation of HD content increases to meet demand. FOCUS Enhancements continues to extend FireStore's leadership by integrating HD format support to the industry's most popular disk acquisition solution, giving video professionals everything they need to maintain HD integrity from glass to glass."

FS-4 HD and FS-4Pro HD enable users to switch between standard definition DV25 mode and HD mode. DV25 mode allows recordings in any one of eight or ten DTE technology supported file formats while HD mode allows 480p/576p, 720p or 1080i MPEG2 transport streams to be recorded and used immediately with supporting NLE applications.

The portable, lightweight FS-4 HD features a removable Li-Ion battery pack, sixteen front panel buttons, a back-lit status LCD display, multiple control modes, a six second retro-cache, user definable function keys, extensive playback features and support for DV25 based DTE. In addition to HD formats, FireStore supports RawDV, AVI Type 1, AVI Type 2, Matrox AVI, Canopus AVI, QuickTime, 24p QuickTime and 24p AVI Type 2. The FS-4Pro HD has the same feature set as FS-4, but also includes up to ten seconds of retro-cache, retro disk, loop record, user definable folders for scene marking, and support for additional DV25 DTE technology file formats including Avid DV-OMF and Pinnacle AVI.

Where to Buy

Prices for the FS-4 HD, FS-4 HD Pro will be announced in April 2005. FireStore HD upgrades, FS-4 HD, and FS-4Pro HD are expected to be available in the Summer of 2005 through the worldwide FOCUS Enhancements dealer and distributor network. We are very pleased that FireStore FS-4 has now begun shipping and many customers have been able to experience the advantages of disk based acquisition with Direct To Edit technology. The feedback we have had on FS-4 thus far has been very positive and we hope to continue with this trend. One issue that has arisen with some early units is that the battery can be difficult to remove. This problem has since been corrected in manufacturing, but Focus would like to also take care of this problem with units in the field.

If customers have a unit within the serial number range of 1156 to 1536, and are experiencing difficulties removing the battery, Focus would like to invite you to return your current battery and rear cover for a replacement at no charge. Customers can contact Focus tech support at 408-370-9963 or support@focusinfo.com to organize the exchange. This offer is valid until June 30th. 2005.

Please contact Focus Enhancements technical support or customer support for further details.

Recently there have been reports from some FS-100 users of drop-outs during recordings. Unfortunately some units shipped from our production plant with an incorrect FireWire bridge chip configuration. Focus apologizes for this problem and inconvenience, and we assure you that these drop-outs are in no way related to drive performance or future reliability, but rather a simple software error which resulted in a buffer overrun.

We have corrected this problem and posted a software update here:

http://www.focusinfo.com/support/downloads.asp

We recommend that ALL FS-100 users load this updated software, as there is no harm in doing so even if your unit is set correctly. Please download the new software (follow the software update instructions on the READ ME enclosed in the zip file) and then do a System Reset (follow instructions on page 72 of the User Guide).

I've downloadedthe FireStore_FS100 Updated from Focus's website and had successfully installed int onto one of our two firestores today.

I will be testing the Firestore tomorrow to see if there are any improvements - especially regarding the drop out / drop data issues.

However, in checking my version # of my FS-100 (Under Setup --> v 1.0.0.), I noticed that the updated FS-100 shows a firmware / version # that is lower than the FS-100 that wasn't updated:

Updated FS-100:
1.0.0.04052606
NTSC
FS-100

Not yet updated FS-100
1.0.0.05040706
NTSC
FS-100

I am wondering if the numbers are just indicators and that the "newer" firmware does not necessary has a higher firmware / version #.

Please help me clarify this. Thank you!

Cheers,
MK

Hi Douglas,

Under Software Downloads, the new version is the first link in the list.

Regarding your question Michael, the last set of numbers are key for the software version number...

Updated FS-100:
1.0.0.04052606
NTSC
FS-100

Not yet updated FS-100
1.0.0.05040706
NTSC
FS-100

On the Updated version, it was a SW build created on May 26, 2006. On the Non updated version, it was a SW build that was created on April 7, 2006. Hope that clears it up.

Matt
