I will be working on a student project consisting of mainly interviews using a canon gl2. I am worried that the onboard mic will not be sufficient, so i am wondering if anyone can point me to any mics that i could use in the sub-$75 area. I will not be keeping my equipment when i am finished, so "investing" in euqipment is not really a choice.
I understand that this is not nearly enough money for most of you all to buy a mic, but i just need something to get the job done

you can ALWAYS find used 831b lavs on Ebay for around 50.00, and they are available new for about 100.00 anyway. Great interview mic, if you can manage a lav. If not, the Shure SM 58 is another good choice, but it's a little harder to get close to the subject., and is bigger on screen.

Why not rent. Sub $75 stuff isn't decent. JMO

For your project, camera and budget I would suggest the Calrad 10-91 lav. You can get it from arcade electronics for $31.50

I have 3 of these and used them a lot for interviews with my GL2 until I bought something better. Bullet proof and strong audio levels into the GL2
You should pick up a 10 foot extension cable for it. This one for $2 should work:
