View Full Version : HDV vs. a mini-HD + chroma noise on 3 chip HDV
Heath McKnight April 25th, 2004, 10:29 PM Could a mini-HD camera, like the one from Panasonic in 2006/7 (http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24784) beat the HDV format? Will a 3 ccd camera, in our opinions, cut down the chroma noise the 1 ccd HDV makes?
This is a friendly debate, and I look forward to your answers!

Of course.

But why, Maury?

Barry Green April 26th, 2004, 08:52 AM I don't think the question is being asked properly -- I think what you're asking is, will these new cameras beat THE JVC HD10, not "will they beat HDV", because the two are not the same.
We haven't seen a true HDV camera yet, technically. HDV was announced six months after the current JVC camera was already on the market -- it was grandfathered in, but it's a huge leap to say that the JVC represents the HDV format. JVC announced plans to produce a 3-CCD, 24P, 2/3" chip, professional-class HDV camcorder... THAT should be a much better representative of the HDV format.
It would be extremely unfair to judge the potential of HDV based on this current, highly limited, maximized-for-low-cost camera.
Heath McKnight April 26th, 2004, 08:58 AM Actually, I think I just wanted to know NOT if the HD10 would be beaten (it will, by JVC and many others), but if HDV could become the Beta Max of formats if this mini-HD comes out in 2006 or so.
I was just looking to liven up the friendly debate! :-)

Barry Green April 26th, 2004, 04:57 PM Okay, I see where you're coming from.
The HD wars are far from settled, although the coalition is a good starting point. There will likely always be competing formats... you'd think we'd have gotten over it after the phenomenal success of the CD, but they did it to us again with the DVD+R vs. DVD-R specs...
... if Panasonic had signed on to HDV, it'd have been a fairly unanimous outing, with all the major manufacturers endorsing one spec. But with them withholding support, then you're right, the prospect for a format war does exist, and HDV could go the way of MicroMV, Digital-8, BetaSX, and many other dead/dying formats Sony has created.
Heath McKnight April 26th, 2004, 10:14 PM Don't forget, Panasonic and JVC are owned by the same company.
