View Full Version : Chuck Norris
Dave Largent April 25th, 2004, 02:40 PM Just saw one of his infomercials where he and his
wife are peddling an exercise machine. It appeared to
be video that had been film-looked.
Dylan Couper April 25th, 2004, 05:46 PM What elements made it look like film? I know the infomercial he does, but don't remember anything particular about its look.
Chuck Norris used to kick a**.
Now well... I guess he could still kick my a**.
Frank Granovski April 25th, 2004, 06:13 PM Chuck did a movie in Vancouver a number of years back. On scene was in this Iranian restaurant in North Vancouver (around Lonsdale 14th area). In this scence he used 2 very, very bad Iranian words---which both mean the same thing. Very funny hearing that come out of Chuck's soft spoken mouth.
The commercial was most likely shoot with video. But who knows.
Dave Largent April 25th, 2004, 06:34 PM Looked like it was deinterlaced.
John Hudson April 25th, 2004, 10:11 PM I dig Chuck. I remember growing up in the 70's and 80's with
An Eye for an Eye
The Octagon
A Force of One
Good Guys Wear Black
Pretty impressive resume that has spanned over 30 years. NOt great works but has a market I suppose.
Frank Granovski April 25th, 2004, 10:21 PM I had seen some old fighting footage of him years ago. He was, very very good. He seems to favour his spinning back kick (targeting the lower stomach area), at least in his movies and Walker. My wife loves Walker, so I'm forced to have it in the background when I'm typing away here.
Rik Sanchez April 26th, 2004, 04:33 AM Chuck is cool, first time I saw him was in Bruce Lee's Return of the Dragon, the big fight at the coliseum. He even filmed a movie in my home town, El Paso, Texas.
Remember the line of jeans he was selling, it had a special crotch design that allowed you to kick real high while wearing those jeans.
I'm up for seeing a Chuck Norris/Dylan Couper death match. I bet if winner's prize is an XL-2, Dylan will definetely kick Chuck's butt.
Frank Granovski April 26th, 2004, 04:44 AM Chuck was well known well before he was in that Bruce Lee movie, depending on how old you were when you started your martial arts training. :-))
The jeans are good for going into battle. But it's easier just to phone 911.
Martin Munthe April 26th, 2004, 04:52 AM Chuck is the man.
But how is it something out of the ordinary that informercials and regular broadcast content is "film looked"? Here in Sweden (and the rest of Europe) we've been switching on DVE/Strobe (fast deinterlacing) and crushed blacks (similar to curves) and added saturation settings since the very early 90's on almost everything that's produced including infomercials. And let's not forget "instant sex". Have you ever seen a show like Joe Millionaire without "instant sex". The many times I've been in the US I get the same impression from TV.
It's also very possible that a high profile infomercial could have been shot using s-16 or 35mm. It's been done before.
Dave Largent April 26th, 2004, 05:53 AM Well, guys, I wasn't sure if there were one "r"s or two
in Norris' name so I googled it and the first thing
that came up was his "official website", complete
with a personal auditory welcome from Chuck.
Anyways, it said on his site (to my recollection) that he was the
undefeated World Middleweight Karate chapion for six
years straight. I'd like to see some of that fight footage
you saw Frank. There's gotta be some around.

Christian Hede Madsen April 26th, 2004, 06:37 AM Yeah Chuck is great... and yeah I really like him in " the return of the dragon"
Any of you guys do martial arts?
I myself do Shotokan karate-do.
Martin Munthe April 26th, 2004, 08:11 AM Highly off topic but fun anyway:
I've trained Shotokan (my favorite Karate style because it's very simple and straight forward) for several years a long time ago. Other than that I've been into a wide variety of Bushido arts. Aikido, Taijutsu, Kenjutsu, Iaido, Kendo, Kyodo. I also used to train Ninjutsu (the style was Ninpo GoshinJutsu Mu Te Jinen Ryu).
My guess is that Chuck Norris style is what's usually refered to as "American Eclectic". Most of the American fighters that practiced knock down Karate during the 70's used it (like Bill "Superfoot" Wallace). It's kind of an American army version of Okinawa Karate. Not much Kata. A lot of Kumite.
Martial arts is GREAT for Steadicam operators. Every operator should practice Martial Arts (or Ballet).
John Hudson April 26th, 2004, 03:27 PM Chuck had a 'school' in Orange County (I think it was Orange County) back in the 70's and my dad worked out there (knew Chuck and learned from him NOT buddy buddy with him). Once, Priscilla Presley came in there as Elvis trained there too (My dad met Priscilla NOT Elvis).
No point here; just chatting.
Frank Granovski April 26th, 2004, 04:05 PM I practice this: http://www.8palm.com
I think old Chuck fight scenes are available. In the past I seem to recall it being sold in Black Belt Mag's ad section.
Marco Leavitt April 26th, 2004, 04:17 PM Man, the Octagon. I tried to see that in the theater way back and they wouldn't let me in because they said I was too young. Never have seen it. I did manage to get in "Good Guys Wear Black" though. Cool movie.
Dylan Couper April 26th, 2004, 10:15 PM If an XL2 was on the line, Chuck might as well throw in the towel before the match is signed. :)
I trained for a few years in the martial arts, before I realized that all martial arts train to fight against themselves, and untrained assailants, but NONE of them teach how to defend against a WWF Pro-Wrestling style opponent.
Try and kick your way out of my Jacknife Powerbomb Chuck!!! :)
Frank Granovski April 26th, 2004, 10:43 PM Dylan, you should have trained here:

Chuck Norris was the original Bad ass guys. Before the movies, as a 19 year old kid in the air force. He fought full contact matches in the late 50's with "old school" fighters in Korea and Japan for a number of years and was undefeated.
Bad ass.
Guess we all have to make a buck somehow these days.
Joe Carney April 27th, 2004, 09:22 AM Chucks original style was tang soo do, Korean, pre dates tae kwan do with more circular moves. (it was one of the first styles I trained in). He was stationed in Korea like so many in the Air Force.
Dave Largent April 27th, 2004, 01:44 PM So what about Jeet Kun Do? Is it *all that*?
I just saw that movie about Bruce Lee ....
Frank Granovski April 27th, 2004, 02:08 PM Jeet Kune Do was Bruce Lee's style, mainly consisting of wing chun, hung gar, fencing and western boxing.
Dave Largent April 27th, 2004, 03:46 PM I read a book about it years ago. I remember he had the
1" punch and the 3" punch, which I believe he gave
impressive demonstrations of.
Frank Granovski April 27th, 2004, 05:11 PM Those short punches aren't magic. They just require "fajing" (explosion).

Brrr.... Not in Winnipeg! Way too cold for my warm southern Ontario blood. Yeah it gets cold in soutern Ontario, but not WINNIPEG cold! :)
Although I have always wanted to say "Your Crane style is no match for my Tiger Claw. Prepare to be defeated! HA HA HA HA HA HA!"
Frank Granovski April 28th, 2004, 12:33 AM That's why Winnipeg is a good place to train, or study. Inside the kwoon (school) is warm. Tiger Claw is also the largest such school in Canada.
Ed Hill April 30th, 2004, 08:24 AM Martin,
What is this mysterious and enigmatic video technique called
"instant sex"?
Ed Hill
Martin Munthe May 1st, 2004, 02:28 AM Instant sex was originally when you fed two identical streams of video through a video mixer and you blurred the top layer and made it transparent on top of the original video. Invented by David Fincher for George Michaels "Freedom" video in the early 90's.
You can do it in any NLE by just placing a copy of the clip your working with above it and defocus it an add some type of transparency (whatever fit's the shot and your taste best). There are also a lot of filters that does the instant sex thing without the manual fiddling. As seen in millions of wedding videos. It's probably one of the most over used effects and very few use it tastfully (like Fincher did). Most people just crank up the blur and smear everything out into a big soft...yuck...
The thing is with instant sex that it can be used in a smart way that fools the eye that low res video is actually of higher res and has more lattitude. You see it once every ten thousand times it's used. Star Wars EPII is a good example of instant sex used that way. A lot of animation studios use it to give more variety to the end result and make it less flat. Instant sex can be beautiful and butt ugly.
Ken Hodson May 3rd, 2004, 11:39 AM Isn't that Chrisy Brinkley in that infomercial with Chuck?
Ken
Matt Stahley June 1st, 2004, 03:45 AM Chuck Norris impersonator (http://www.look-alikes.com/actm66.htm)
Ben Gurvich June 1st, 2004, 03:52 AM Now you guys got me wondering.
The anothony Robbins get the edge infomercial has some b&w footage that has been filmlooked or is actually film. I dunno its hard to tell at 3am.
Dave Largent June 1st, 2004, 06:51 AM Chuck Noris is married to Christy Brinkley.
Ken Hodson June 1st, 2004, 02:21 PM I think you mean Christy Brinkley was married to Billy Joel.
Ken
John Hudson June 2nd, 2004, 10:55 PM Still one of the great unsolved mysteries. What is it with Supermodels and ugly rock stars? :P
