View Full Version : Pics and comments from my visit to NAB today..
Adam Burtle April 19th, 2004, 06:51 PM *MODS.. feel free to move this wherever is most appropriate*
**I will update this thread with more video, pics, etc throughout the week**
I dont know if anyone cares.. but for those of you who dont have the chance to attend nab, i thought i'd post some pics and talk about some of what i see this week. I didn't have a chance to take very many pics today, as I have a laundry list of stuff my company needs to buy, and today was the day where i find every booth on the list, make contact with those companies, and see if their products are better or worse than the competition.
The first booth i wanted to find, was ZGC's. I've heard nothing but good things about ZGC on here, and I have been drooling over the mini35 since i first saw video online of them. I found ZGC pretty quickly in the C-hall.. they had an HD cam, an XL1, and another cam all outfitted with Cooke and Optex lenses, and pro/mini 35 units. All three cams are aimed at a miniature set (maybe 3'x3') with model grass ,fireplace log, a stuffed squirrel/ferret, bottle of soda, sand, and some other stuff. My first disappointment came when i stood in front of the ZGC booth (maybe 2-3 feet from the XL1) for at least 10 minutes waiting for someone to talk to me, or approach me. I tried to have the "i'm ready to buy at least 1-2 mini35's but would like to try them out first" look on my face.. but apparantly it didn't work (which sucks, since I actually AM ready to pickup 2 units, i just need to justify them to my boss.. who was with me, and not happy that no one seemed to want to talk to me). All of their salespeople were busy with other customers, finished with them, and then went to help other people standing near me. I toyed with the XL1 for 5-10 minutes, still no one talked to me, and i figured 20+ minutes at one booth was long enough.
I did snap one shot of the XL1.. fitted with a 27mm Cooke S4
http://www.adamgeek.com/nab1.jpg
I'm sad to say I came back to the ZGC booth twice more throughout the day, and never could manage to speak with anyone from ZGC. I did have a 15 minute conversation with one of the optex guys though, who let me play on one of the HDcams outfitted with a 5.5mm optex wideangle periscope pens.. absolutely cool, at least for use ont he miniature set.. gave very shallow DOF from 5-10" away from the objects, and due to the length of the lens, when you pan the camera on the tripod, it doesn't seem like a tripod rotating on a single axis, but rather a crane sweep.. since the lens is soooo long. He explained to me how it uses in in-lens relay system to provide 35mm view angle and dof to the 2/3" chip camera.. but i wasn't quite clear how it did this, since he claimed it was all done optically (without the aid of GG)
Anyway, like i said earlier, i didn't have much picture taking chance today, but tomorrow, when i return to the ZGC booth i'll take some more pics there. I looked for P+S Teknic GMBH's booth, but i couldnt find it where it was supposed to be.. i'll try to look some more tomorrow.
I spoke to a guy named Walter Klassen, who makes carbon fiber vests for MK-V steadycams.. who had some really cool body mounts. His vests were absolute works of art, and I hope to demo one of the arri-rigged units tomorrow.. I watched a couple of their experienced operators for about 10-15 mins today doing various moves.. and it was absolutely artful to watch them dolly around people, and make snap movements panning the camera.
Maxell had a booth where their plasma screen demo was prohjecting 10GB disc media, 23GB, 50GB, 200GB.. and even 400GB per disc optical media.. they were saying 2006-2007 for the 400GB stuff.. holy cow@!!
Arri had a bunch of film scanners, but there were so many people crowded i didn't get a chance to look closely.
Really looking forward to playing on a smoke machine tomorrow as well. I watched a presentation on a "quantel" "eq" today.. a DI system for color grading up to (and beyond??) 4k scans, and the workt he colorist was doing (live, on a projection screen) was very impressive.. i only caught the last 2/3 or so of the demo, but I plan to watch the entire thing tomorrow. I suspect that most of the people watching the demo didnt know what color grading is, since a lot seemed to walk up, and walk off, but from what i saw today, their system seems to be about as robust as all the video i've seen of people using Lustre / collosus5d systems. He had the ability to load preset templates he had made (much like in magicbullet), and then tweak them manually, mask out certain areas to adjust luminance, saturation, etc and motion track those same areas with the masks. I didn't see what (if any) kind of keyframing it has integrated, which i'd like to talk to them about tomorrow, since it would be nice to be able to keyframe in adjustments, shifting gamma or saturation along the timeline.. as well as find out if it's built for a closed architecture, and what he total pricetag is. Actually, they had at least 2-3 other booths open doing presentations in.. and if they have other editing suites that are as effective adn tehir color grading suite seems to be, they might be a good contendor in place of a smoke or avid system for editing.
Anyway, sorry to ramble.. i don't know if anyone is even interested in what I am going to take pics of, or my impressions of various stuff.. so i guess speak up and let me know what you want to see.. i will take a bunch of pics tomorrow, but if you want to see particular stuff, I can swing by booths if i have time.. and my boss is taking thursday off, so I intend to use thursday as a chance to run around with an XL1 shooting a bunch of video of various products, so I can post some of that if anyone is interested.
Again, sorry to ramble, thanks for reading this far.. if you did haha.
Lynne Whelden April 19th, 2004, 07:44 PM Any HDV products you come across would be appreciated but given the dribble of news so far, I think the big guys threatened to cut JVC off at the knees if they ever, EVER pull a stunt like the HD10 again. So it's back to the molasses in January pace of developement for HDV products. Unless you can unearth some news we're missing....
Marco Leavitt April 19th, 2004, 07:59 PM Thanks for posting Adam. Keep it coming!
Heath McKnight April 19th, 2004, 08:19 PM Hey, what's the biggest day of NAB? The first, last, etc.??
heath
Adam Burtle April 19th, 2004, 08:25 PM OH yea.. and anyone wondering about a mini35.. a few first impressions..
1: it was virtually silent.. i had to put my ear UP TO the unit to hear any noise at all.
2: on the 7" LCD monitors they had, i could not perceive any grain at all when i turned the GG oscillator off.. i'm going to ask tomorrow if they will let me pop in a miniDV tape, for a few seconds, so i can examine the footage at home for grain etc.
Heath, I am not actually very certain what the "biggest" day is.. probably sometime mid to late week. there were at least 5 thousand people there today by my guess..
Heath McKnight April 19th, 2004, 08:27 PM Sorry, i'll be more specific: What's the biggest day for announcements at NAB? Last year I was following it with my film partner Jeremiah like crazy. This year, I'm much more casual about it, not sure why. Except last year I was looking forward to the HD10 (HDV) camera.
heath
Chris Hurd April 19th, 2004, 08:33 PM Firdst dsay ids usually the big one. Many thanks, Adam -- keep it up! Much appreciated,
Heath McKnight April 19th, 2004, 08:41 PM Chris,
Was the first day Sunday?
Also, are you out there? I'm pretty sure you are; you and Vegas seem pretty friendly! ;-)
heath
Graeme Nattress April 19th, 2004, 09:44 PM I'm posting my NAB updates at:

John Steele April 20th, 2004, 08:37 AM If any of you guys pass the glidecam stand could you grab a couple of pics of the New V10 and V35?
John.
Marco Leavitt April 20th, 2004, 11:09 AM Hey Adam, if you're still taking requests, how about swinging by the Sound Devices booth? Their T-series recorders are supposed to be on display.
Joe Carney April 20th, 2004, 12:50 PM Graeme, could you possible post more info and pics about the new JVC HDV camera? Thanks in advance
Heath McKnight April 20th, 2004, 12:52 PM http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24821
That should answer some HDV questions.

Adam Burtle April 20th, 2004, 10:29 PM see below for post.. i may have to break it into pieces..
Frank Granovski April 20th, 2004, 11:15 PM You may want to split your info post in 2, if it's that long of a thread.
Adam Burtle April 20th, 2004, 11:50 PM I will try to get the pics you guys asked for tomorrow or thursday. Videotaping inside is "by permit only"
but i intend to bring an XL1S tomorrow and shoot as much video as i can manage.. not only to sharwe with you
guys, but so i can review a lot of products later on tape and decide if they are worth the $$.
Okay..

NAB Day 2.
I started my day off with one of the on-air "talent" from the company i work for. He wanted to see some of
the teleprompters first hand, so we hit a few of those booths.

you guessed it, a mini35. And this one even had a focusroller on it. Pulled some focus, had a nice chat
with the Canon lady there about the mini35.. turns out she was from ZGC and not canon!
Nice. Overall, the mini35 was delightful to use with an actual focus roller.. nice smooth background blur hehe. stuck the camera up to the viewfinder and tried to get a couple shots of me focussing on her hand.

I took a lot of pictures of my smoke session.. so i could later refer to them and categorize the various
things i experimented with, and write down my feelings about it. I was testing with the intention to buy
/something/ in that price range, and i wanted as much advantage to review info later as possible. However,
a lotof these pics are for "my own" use.. so i cut them out. Also, i don't know how much discreet wants me
showing tons ofpics about their session.. i'm sure they wouldnt care much (or they would have asked me to
stop using the camera).. but i think for now, most of these pics will be omitted.
Let me share a few thoughts, about the time i had with the smoke machine.
First off, smoke was, without a doubt, the most powerful, and dare i say, hands down, the BEST editing suite
i've ever had the luck to use. It kicked. I walked out of the discreet booth feeling like i just got laid for the first time. It was that good. There are three reasons I *LOVED* their machine.. in no particular order..
1: it's ability to guess exactly what you want it to do, thus taking out all the guess work. chromakeying
PERFECTLY in there is a matter of seconds.. VS. in Vegas4, might be a matter of never. i liked vegas4 a
lot.. for $499, it's a hell of a deal.. but i really see now how vegas is the "Honda Civic" and Smoke is the
"Porsche 911" .. I can only imagine what inferno, lustre, etc could do. The chroma keying was easy to do
because the source material was very well shot, but ALSO because it had some really nice key filters, for
instance the ability to view the chromakey matte and automatically add other color shades it disregarded. I
only use chromakey as an example.. there were 10 other "finishing" type effects we did that I found to be
years ahead of anything vegas will put out (not to knock vegas though.. $499 to $60k is a big jump)
2: it's speed.. i dunno the system specs, but it was an IBM intellistar station, with TONS of power. the
frame analyzing was easily 50-60x faster than my home system does combustion at.. and i use an AMD XP2k with
1024MB of PC2100 at home for most of my grunt rendering. The motion tracking system was better [more
accurate] than combustion, and easily 50x faster than my home machine does it.
3: robustness/ease of use. the display is VERY complex, but very easy to use once you know how to use it. it
is super robust and laid out very well. the fact that it could do ALLLLL sorts of compositing and post stuff
as WELL as full blown editing.. the color correction was FAR better than anything i've EVER used (although
not as good as other products i've SEEN that are $100k+ (i.e. lustre, quantumEQ) and devoted solely to color
correction.. but still, it was VERY VERY VERY good)
HOLDEN (http://www.adamgeek.com/nab/DSC05302.JPG)
One quick screenshot.. of some source footage from a PAL 16:9 Holden commercial. That grass was BROWN
before i color corrected it (selectively).. and all this was accomplished realtime, in a matter of seconds.

Here it is.. the holy grail. My dream camera. Fresh from using my dream NLE, i figured i could indulge
further and play with my dream cam. 9.2million pixels x 3ccd x 4:4:4 output. A salesman almost immediately
walked up, and started talking with me. We spoke about the output methods, datastorage, cost, etc. He was
really nice, said they were negotiable on pricing to a degree, and when my technical questions got too deep
for him, he handed me off to an engineer. I spoke with an engineer who was involved in buildingit, for a
while, and picked his brain about the storage methods.
For those who don't know, the filmstream viper can shoot 1920x5800 footage, at 4:4:4 10bit. Think i messed up that resolution? nope, the CCD's are STUPID tall, so you can pic any native aspect you want, and not "lose" resolution. I think it might be 5486, and not 5800.. whatever the height, it's big. Basically, shoot with this thing, and get true, uncompressed, SDI 10bit output, color correct it, post it, whatever, output to 35mm, and hello world. Size wise, it was on par with a smaller betacam, and their model was
equipped with a P+S pro35.. oddly they hadn't heard of the mini35,so i filled them in haha.

I had seen this product on the net before, and thought it was just hype. In actuality, it works very well..
if you had the need for a totally portable key-studio, where you can switch keycolors on the fly (say if
your talent wore blue jeans by accident and you're on a tight deadline). The "Gray" background is cloth,
and has 70,000 glass beads woven into it per inch. they reflect intense light only STRAIGHT ON.. so when
you view it at any angle to the light.. you see gray. the "LIGHT" is an LED light ring they sell, which
mounts AROUND the lens of your camera. when you look through the center of the ring (or your camera) you
are at the perfect angle to see the glass bead reflections and you see the color reflected very intensely.

um.. (http://www.adamgeek.com/nab/DSC05343.JPG)
Towards the end of my day, i had a chance to wander by the MK-V booth, and put on two of their steadycams.
I used one of their ~$30k units and one that totalled about $58-60k. This was the first time i'd every
operated a steadycam. Each person i would talk to there would ask "so you're a steadycam operator" and i
would reply, "No, i'm using rollerblades right now, and we're pretty tired of shooting that way." eventully
i just started saying no and leaving out the rollerblades part, because it was getting redundant. Firstoff,
they were super nice, and super helpful. Howard smith spent about 10-15 minutes teaching me the basics, and
in that timeframe, i was walking 50-100foot distances totally smoothly, and getting what i would consider a
"usable" steady shot. No tricky camera moves.. but i didn't drop the sucker either, and i was moderately
smooth for a total beginner. I learned very quickly the trick (for me) is to use almost no pressure with
the left hand.. just use it to direct (or rediect) the camera.. intentionally, or if it wants to drift.
Their systems, i am quite sure, are the Ferrari of steadycams.. all carbon fiber, very well sorted, and
incredibly smooth and easy to use (look at me.. i'm an idiot, and i could use it).
I have always had a ton of respect for steadycam stuff.. it looks so beautiful when done right, and now i
can barely begin to appreciate just how much work goes into honing one's craft to capture those beautiful
movements.
I talked to Howard's wife for a while, who is also very nice, and was an operator for 3yrs (howard, for
17yrs) before she became pregnant. Their gimbal bearings, as you can imagine, were BEYOND smooth.. you
could gently tap the gimbal when the cam was on the c-stand, and it would sway back and forth for at least
45 seconds before stopping. Everything that could be, was made of CF..

i wandered by the arri booth on my way out.. it was now nearing 6pm and past time to go home. no time for
lunch today, or time ot even stop and have a drink, all i did all day was run from booth the booth seeing
stuff, and in between take some picsif i had a chance. i got home hungry, and thirsty as hell, but it was
worth it.

Chris Hurd April 21st, 2004, 12:26 AM Adam, if you find yourself back in the South Upper, please come back by the Canon booth where I'm working. It would be great to meet you! Thanks a bunch for these reports,
Heath McKnight April 21st, 2004, 12:30 AM Outstanding report, Adam!
Thanks,
heath
Chris Hurd April 21st, 2004, 12:39 AM << with the Canon lady there about the mini35.. turns out she was from ZGC and not canon! >>
She is none other than our own famous Christine B. from ZGC, she has her own fan club (http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9570), she's just awesome. No other words to describe her. Christine rules.
Rich Lee April 21st, 2004, 01:10 AM Adam, i very much enjoyed your postings, thanks alot for doing them! goodstuff!
Im just curious. is it definit that canon wont be releasing a new dv cam at NAB? I mean, do companies ever pull something out of the hat on the last day and throw everyone for a loop? i guess i'm still hopefull that they will suprise us.
Nick Hiltgen April 21st, 2004, 01:14 AM I got half my office at NAB and the only way I'm getting anything remotely interesting out of Las Vegas is through your updates thanks Adam!
Robert Knecht Schmidt April 21st, 2004, 02:49 AM Yes, let's see some pictures of you and Chris Hurd... posed compromisingly...
Nick Kerpchar April 21st, 2004, 06:29 AM Adam rocks! Thanks for the great report.
Chris Hurd April 21st, 2004, 08:04 AM Compromising poses cost. But, I'll see what I can do.
Mark Richman April 21st, 2004, 08:55 AM Good job, I expected some of these Digital websites to have some good info to share about NAB.
This is the best reporting I have seen so far. Maybe the other guys are adding their "creative touch" to their stories/reports.
Mark
Cosmin Rotaru April 21st, 2004, 09:38 AM Thank you Adam! Very good report and nice pics!
David Stoneburner April 21st, 2004, 09:45 AM Yes thank you very much. My supervisor, who is not a video guy, said that I only need to go to NAB every other year, maybe. So this is just great.
Thanks again!
Lynne Whelden April 21st, 2004, 06:24 PM With folks like Adam on the scene, it's the next best thing to being there ourselves!
Adam Burtle April 21st, 2004, 10:03 PM Hey guys.. i didnt get to take any pics at all today. Today was super hectic, trying to get all the ducks in a row for submission to my bosses, and it lookslike i may only have 1-2 hrs at NAB tomorrow, if even that. I am going to stop in to the canon booth to say hi to chris hurd, but i dont think i'm going to be able to get any video. I might get lucky and get all day there tomorrow, but i'm not counting on it.. it's possible i may not even get to go at all if my boss drops something on me.
I'm glad you all liked the pics so far, and Chris hopefully i'll get a chance to stop in tomorrow!
Ronald Lee April 22nd, 2004, 12:34 AM So is mini35 looking like it will be the star of the future? Is there a lot of attention and hope for it by NAB patrons?
And can you tell us in detail what Sony has in store for use and what cameras they are displaying (out of curioisity, are they displaying the PDX10 and PD170?).
Adam Burtle April 22nd, 2004, 10:29 AM I honestly havent even had a chance to see the sony booth yet.. i'm not a sony guy, and my time is prettymuch limited to seeing te stuff that i feel would be worth aquiring in the future. the sony booth is near the canon booth.. when i go to nab in a bit (barring unforseen stuff popping up here at work), i'll try to stop into the sony booth and have a look at some of their displays.
the mini35 isn't getting a lot of attention that i saw at the ZGC booth.. but in the canon booth, a lot of "regular" people who might be considering an XL1 now have a chance to see the mini35 in action.. i saw don berube there yesterday demo'ing it for several people.. i think this effort on the part of canon, helps to "mainstream" the technology. i would also mention that the filmstream viper is fitted with a pro35, which speaks to the quality of P+S's product.. i doubt that TGV would outfit a $150k camera setup with the pro35 if it wasn't a quality item.
James Emory April 28th, 2004, 01:17 AM Hello Adam. I was wondering what those dots over the lines are under random crane and jib pics links on page two of this thread. The links work but why are they dots and dashes? Great job on the narrative with pictures throughout NAB!
Adam Burtle April 30th, 2004, 09:06 PM james, those are just random dots i typed because i was bored with giving links names.. took me a long time to write those posts and i was sick of naming links haha.
