Hi all!

New here and just wondering if there was a way to capture video before its compressed to tape?...Or...When does the compression of the signal take place?

I heard that capturing through the Pana SDX-900 SD-I port live, one could obtain an uncompressed 10 bit signal?

What about cameras that shoot stills at higher resolutions, could one capture moving stills at these frame sizes some how?

Some info on these questions would be gladly appreciated!

thanks.

DV compression happens in the camera in one of its chips. Basically
you cannot get an uncompressed signal out of a standard
con-/prosumer camera unless it has a special uncompressed port.
I would not use an analog port for this because this will introduce
a host of other (quality) problems.

I have no knowledge on the Pana camera or SD-I ports so I
cannot comment on that, sorry.

There are some other things you might be able to do like modify
an existing camera (this will void warranty and possibly damage
your camera etc.). The first attempt of people trying this can be
found in this thread (http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20332).

I doubt a still camera could capture frames fast enough. The only
way it could possibly work is if you can hook it up to a PC and
get picture information realtime without having to take a picture.
