I have been hired to make a movie the budget is 100,000. I have most of the equipment I need if the Sony V1U is up to the task. The project will most likely go strait to DVD. But there is always that chance that this will be the one that makes it. Having said that what frame rate do you think I should shoot. 24p, 24pa, 30p? Now that we have digital cinema does it matter?

The Sony V1U is a good camera. Shoot 24p native.

Isn't 24pa the mode that supports pulldown removal and would allow for transfer to film and editing in a true 24p timeline?

I would think that is mode you would want to use.

Hey thanks for responding let me ask you this would you edit on a 24p timeline? The reason I ask is I just finished a commercial for NBC and they wanted me to shoot in 24p not 24pa and edit on a 29.97 timeline. When I asked why they said they were just going for the look.

Neither. For maximum versatility for a variety of output formats you should always shoot 60i, which is most easily converted to other formats.

60i works for me. What about shutter speed and gamma curve?

I just always use the defaults: 1/60th and normal (auto) gamma. I like to do all my tweaking in post so my priority is obtaining footage that is as "neutral" as possible, so I'm not locked into anything.

Others will disagree.
