View Full Version : Matrox MXO2 Mini with Cineform
Leo Baker June 29th, 2009, 12:01 PM Hello,
I was reading about this
Matrox MXO2 Mini Now Provides Inexpensive HDMI Monitoring for AVCHD Editing with Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 and CineForm NeoScene

How far off is the Blackmagic Decklink realtime output of Cineform projects to a Broadcast monitor via hd/sdi, component, HDMI etc? Or is it just easier to get a AJA XENA LHE card under Windows and get rid of my Multibridge Eclipse?
As it's annoying not be able to watch what you are editing using Blackmagic cards and the suppport for the XENA cards are already there.

Gary Brun June 30th, 2009, 05:49 AM I cant answer your question but I do use the Matrox mini for Cineform files and it works great.
David Newman June 30th, 2009, 08:49 AM Leo,
Simply Blackmagic drivers are harder to work with. We have to make architectural changes to support it, some of the changes are underway for CS4 (not just for Blackmagic.)

hi Gary,
Does matrox mxo2 mini playsback cineform files(fullraster 1080 25p) captured by Prospect HD in realtime in Premiere CS4??
Gary Bettan June 30th, 2009, 12:00 PM The big difference here is that the folks at Matrox are supporting the team at Cineform and vice-versa. I am happily surprised at how fast and smoothly things are going on this and I hope it's the beginning of a long term relationship that extends up and down both companies product lines.
With the Intensity Pro card being dumped at $199, do you really think Blackmagic is going to be putting any investment into it going forward????
Gary
Geoff Murillo June 30th, 2009, 01:22 PM Hi David and David,
What would be the processor and other hardware specs needed to capture 1080 24p (from the HV20) with a Matrox MXO2 Mini?
I've got a 2.4 Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro that I would run on Windows through Boot Camp if I can't capture on OSX.

Gary Brun June 30th, 2009, 02:31 PM hi Gary,
Does matrox mxo2 mini playsback cineform files(fullraster 1080 25p) captured by Prospect HD in realtime in Premiere CS4??
Well it does for me :-)
That's why I bought it.
Also it doesnt use any PC processing power to view either.
I did have a small problem with jerkiness... but that was because my files were a little fragmented.... quick defrag and everything was back to normal.
Chris Swartz June 30th, 2009, 08:38 PM Hey what I really want to know is can we use the Matrox Mini to capture directly to Cineform, and then playout in the timeline. It sounded like they were tiptoeing around this in the press release. I thought the MXO mini only captured to Mpeg2, granted with higher bitrates, but I'd much rather have a Cineform only workflow. Is it happening now?
Chris
David Newman June 30th, 2009, 09:10 PM Chris,
No capture to CineForm over MXO2. The Matrox API does not allow this yet, please put in your request with Matrox. We also want to support it within First Light, but the same API limitations will need to be overcome.
Gary Brun July 1st, 2009, 04:07 AM I cant capture in the cineform codec but I can view cineform captured files.
Mike Falconer July 1st, 2009, 07:59 AM Can you view out of After Effects with the MXO?

Gary
It depends how many they sell. At this price point it could very well be their number one selling product.
Gary Brun July 1st, 2009, 01:22 PM Can you view out of After Effects with the MXO?
Yes I can.
Kaspar Kallas July 2nd, 2009, 05:16 PM Does it work on mac in FCP and cineform?
Thank You

Sorry Casper I'm not on Mac.... but I cant see why not?
Someone else will come back to you with an answer I'm sure.
Mikael Bergstrom July 3rd, 2009, 02:05 PM I need to clear things up a bit.
1.Does the matrox mxo2 mini playback (Monitor out by HDMI) cineform files (in fullraster of 1080 25p) captured by Prospect HD 3 or 4 in realtime in Premiere CS3?
2.Does the AJA I/o Express playback (Monitor out by HDMI) cineform files (in fullraster of 1080 25p) captured by Prospect HD 3 or 4 in realtime in Premiere CS3?
3.Which of these two is the best purchase in your opinion?
Best Regards
Mikael Bergstrom
Sweden
David Newman July 3rd, 2009, 02:17 PM 1. MXO2 mini is for CS4 only.
2. AJA I/O Express is not out yet.
If you wanting to run CS3, AJA I/O Express under Prospect HD v4 will be only way to go.
Mikael Bergstrom July 3rd, 2009, 02:34 PM Thanks David
So at the moment which cards and brands does Prospect HD 4 support with monitor out at the moment in CS3 for PC, I have a hard time to grasp this?
Could you specify this David, I think many would like to know this.
1. Brand (AJA, Matrox, Decklink and so on)
2. Model number
Best Regards
Mikael Bergstrom
David Newman July 3rd, 2009, 02:51 PM We support
AJA HS
AJA LH
AJA LHe
AJA 2Ke
adding right now
AJA LHi
AJA ioExpress
To use either Matrox or Blackmagic devices you need to use their editing modes, and we have not profiled the performance as it will not be using the Prospect accelerator. We have confirmed under CS4 than both MXO2 and Intensity to playback CineForm AVIs in either edit modes.
Mikael Bergstrom July 3rd, 2009, 03:03 PM First I like to tell you that you are the man David, your (CineForm) support are just unbelievable good, to that I salute you:-)
So the "adding right now" is in a week or two?
AJA LHi
AJA ioExpress
My Best Regards

Maybe that timeframe for LHi, we still need engineering samples to test ioExpress -- it is not out yet.

Robert Young July 3rd, 2009, 07:01 PM I'm interested in what the Matrox MXO2 Mini can do for me.
Right now I'm Vista 64/PHD4/CS4 w/ ATI 4800 card- which is doing a good job of HDMI full screen overlay to HDTV.
1) for a CF workflow, is there any advantage to using the MXO2 for monitoring, rather than the ATI card? Speed? Quality? Reduce demand on system resources?
2) Matrox marketing materials imply that this product provides calibratation tools that will fine tune an HDTV into a reference monitor. Anyone had experience with that feature??
I'd love to give Matrox some money, but you know, If it aint' broke....
Thanks
Gary Brun July 4th, 2009, 08:34 AM I use my Samsung 32" as a referance monitor.
The setup instructions in the manual for the mxo mini are only for NTSC.... bad for PAL but I reckon they will change that soon on calibration side of things.
(I use Spyder 3 for my calibrating of screeens anyway)
I can view out put of full rez Cinform files from CS4 via HDMI out on the mxo mini.
I can also view my CS4 AfterEffects projects with Cineformfiles in full rez without rendering my composition.
Hope that explains what I am saying.
Just note that I work on a fast i7 PC system.
Richard Leadbetter July 4th, 2009, 09:59 AM Can you load up VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org) and go to the File -> Capture AVI option and let me know if the Mini is listed under Devices?
