In Philip Bloom's review he says you need the SxS attachment in order to record MP4, but I've heard elsewhere this is selectable in the menu. Which is correct...anyone know ?

Review of JVC GY-HM 700 By Philip Bloom On ExposureRoom (http://exposureroom.com/members/philipbloom.aspx/assets/3534a3149eed43dfbd283156f20ff563/)

Also, does the over and undercrank work in HD or only SD format?

Thanks

The HM-700 does need the SXS attachment to record the MP4 format. Once attached however, you do NOT need an SXS card. You can record the MP4 format onto the standard SD cards. The HM-100 will record either the MP4 or the MOV format without any additional hardware.

As for the over and undercrank, that I am not sure of. However the HM series is an HD only camera. It does not record in SD. Though they say you can down convert when you pull footage from the camera if you use it like a playback deck (vs. simply pulling the clips off the SD card).

Hope that helps :-)

The HM100 and HM700 only shoot in HD. They are capable of downconversion to SD after recording but recording to files is always in HD.

Kenneth's response is spot-on re: SxS attachment and MP4 recording. The HM100 can record both formats out of the box. The HM700 requires the SxS card attachment (but not the SxS cards.)

BTW JVC refers to the HM700 + KA-MR100 SxS recorder bundle as the HM700XT (GY-HM700UXT for North America and I assume GY-HM700EXT for Europe.)

I've started to refer to a HM700 paired with the SxS recorder as the HM700XT in my recent posts and I hope everyone will follow suit to avoid confusion in the future.

So we have three primary models we discuss here ("E" and "U" demarcations are mostly irrelevant with the HM series):

HM100 (records both MP4 and MOV)
HM700XT (records both MP4 and MOV)
HM700 (records only MOV)
