Bear with me. what about a mic system and the MRC-1? I want to do some recording for the Football Team and I think these would be valuable.
Any recommendations on the mic system for the z5u.
Is the MRC-1 what it seems to be?
Thanks again in advance.

The built in audio would be fine for what it seems you'd be using it for. It has a pretty decent sound
The MRC-1 is what it is. Solid state media which can be used by itself or as a backup to the tape, whichever you prefer. Read some of the posts regarding the quirks. Overall, it's very good and nice to have.

Thanks Rob! I wasn't sure if I needed to hang a mic on the coach or not, since I'll probably be a ways from him.

If you want to hear what he is saying, I would think you will need some sort of Lav system for the coach. I have a Z7. For something like this, I would run a shotgun mic into Ch 1 and the Lav into Ch 2. You should be able to do the same with the Z5.

Any suggestions on something affordable for starters on a lav system?

Greg is right on that, I just assumed you needed nat sound. There are plenty of wireless systems. I use a Sennheiser unit and have never had a problem.

Sennheiser G2 Sennheiser eW112p radio mic kit is cheap now, since the G3 is out now.
I personally have the G3 since 2 weeks, and am very pleased about it.
You also might wanna check out the Envoy En2 ENG Radio Mic from Audio Ltd.
But be aware, with what you buy!
In the USA the FCC, just this month, passed a new ruling that had only been proposed recently by the Chairman of the FCC. This ruling bans the use of any wireless microphone (licensed or not) above 700 MHz after the DTV transition in February 2009!
