I'm having some Super8 film converted to HD; the company tells me the codec will be AVI files using the BlackMagic MJPEG codec.

First of all, will the files work on FCP out of the box, or will I have to go hunting for a codec?

Second, if I plan to color correct using Color, would it be advantageous to convert the files to ProRes? Is there an easy way to tell what color sampling the MJPEG files use?

Thanks!

Hal, if they are using the Blackmagic codec then they should also be able to provide you with ProRes files. However, given that want to deliver .avi files tells me they are using a Blackmagic device on a Windows machine, in which case I doubt they could deliver ProRes. But it never hurts to ask if they can deliver ProRes files. Cheers!

I have Blackmagic on my PC (i rarely use...) and when i bought an mac a year ago, i imported a .AVI MJPEG on FCP and worked... I think will work.. On blackmagic website, i think you can download the codec for mac (drivers only, no need hardware to install i think)...
