It could be your sound card - Avid products can be a bit fussy about sound and video cards. You might want to check their site to see if you have a compatable sound card.
If it is your soundcard the soundblaster cards work well with Avid, I had to get one myself as it just wouldn't run otherwise, it wouldn't even load up. They're quite cheap too.

I was just trying to import footage because i captured it from hdvsplit so its on my computer and i just needed to put it in Avid. But now i can import it but when i try and watch the footage i cant see anything and i only hear the audio.

What video card standard is being used on your laptop?
Is it Nvidia, ATI, on Intel Accelerated?

Derek,
Can you see a still frame of the video, or is it always black even when not playing and parked on a frame?
Also what type of footage and what type of project?

Yea i just see still frame when it plays but when i stop it jumps to that frame and does the same thing. I am using a XHA1 camera HDV and filming on mini DV tapes.
