View Full Version : Eyepiece cover?

I have lens caps and UV filters to protect my GL1's front glass, but what about protection for the eyepiece? Is this something everyone but me knows about?

It seems to me like the eyepiece acts as a natural funnel for dirt and debris, directing it right onto the viewfinder.

Seems like a simple enough device and I was wondering if someone knows where I can get one. Kind of a "viewfinder condom"?

I suppose a piece of cellophane or plastic held on with a rubber band would work, but I was thinking of something a little bit more esthetically pleasing. Another accessory to spend money on???

;o)

Thanks,

A circle of black velvet with elastic sewn into the edge would be very aesthetic - start a sweat-shop somewhere and sit back as the dollars roll in ;-)

If you get one of the 3rd-party eye cups, such as an "I-Cuff" (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?BI=155&O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=229358&is=REG) I think you'll find that the viewfinder stays a bit cleaner by being more shielded from dust. Of course, it will also aid in seeing the viewfinder in bright light.

If you're still anxious to keep the viewfinder covered it would be a simple matter to attach a cloth flap to an I-Cuff.

Robin and Ken,

Two really great ideas...

After posting my enquiry though, I tested putting a small re-useable jar cover (the elastic type) over the eyepiece and other than not being very esthetically pleasing --- it does seal out dirt and debris from the viewfinder.

I want to try out one of the after-market eyecups (the Ikkup) along with a terry cloth band around it. Sounds like it would be much more comfortable than the stock rubber eyepiece?

Thanks again for the great ideas, especially the sweat-shop one! Black velvet sweat bands made in a sweat shop? How appropriate! Maybe I can even get Kathy Lee Gifford involved somehow too?
