Hi guys. :)

The mic that I'm using has a 1/4" plug. Of course, this won't plug into my XL-1 as it is, so I went to one of the local audio supply stores and got a 1/4" Jack to RCA Plug Adaptor. Of course, it can only plug into either right or left, meaning that my sound is only recording on either the right or left channel, depending on which I plug it into (I hope I'm not confusing anyone as much as I'm already confused). I'm assuming that A) I'm either doing something wrong as usual or B) that I need to get an entirely different adaptor or cable - but what kind?

You're close.... But you have two channels coming out of the 1/4 plug so you'll need a <stereo> 1/4 plug to dual RCA jack adapter. Most places have this little critter. It's pretty common. You can also make one if you're so inclined....

It's likely that the 1/4 inch plug only has a single channel of audio coming from it. You can tell if it does by looking at how many different parts there are on the end. Two (seperated by a small black insulator) would indicated mono.

What you need (if you really want both channels to record the same mic) is a RCA plug splitter. It'll have a single RCA female end and two RCA male ends.

Most folks would avoid the extra cable and copy the single channel to the other in post.

I am, as I tell the girl who sometimes helps me with sound on my shoots, a self-diagnosed audio idiot. I can get most of the other stuff right, but always fail miserably at the audio. And that being said, I must blush a big fat bunch when I admit that I didn't even know I could do that. *insert blush here*
