View Full Version : NOISE REDUCTION in Sony HVR-Z7, what is this?

Hello I saw in our new Sony HVR-Z7 a NOISE REDUCTION setting for audio. In the manual there is nothing about this... There only says "reduces noise from the microphone".
Does anyone know what this setting does and how and when you should use it?

Thank you in advance.

I have tried it and it seems to cut rf type noise from the camera, certainly with it switches off I can hear more of the mechanisms in the camera bleeding onto the mic.

The wind setting is a different thing altogether and is a straight bass roll/high pass filter.

I presume it is meant to reduce the noise of the image stabiliser. When switched on, the image stabilisation system makes a clearly audible noise - a kind of humming - that is recorded in quiet circumstances.

So, then I presume you only have to use it when you use the mic mounted on the camera support. But there not seems to be a way to activate it in just one channel... It will it affect the other channel coming from the mixer. Would you leave it always on?
Thanks

I would switch it off, because electronic noise reducing systems always mute some frequencies. Instead I would use a microphone with no omnidirectional characteristics somewhat further away from the camera. You could use the cold shoe on top of he cam to put a shotgun mic there.
