I have been searching high and low to obtain some aluminium oxide grit within the UK, so that I can start work on my gg . If anyone has any information on where to obtain any, I would appreciate it.

Mirror grinders use grit ranging from very coarse all the way to cerium oxide and optical rouge, so you should find what you need, in small quantities and at reasonable prices.
