I have the number right too. Nobody seems to have the same camera as me. Anyways, I have the english manual for the nv mx 350A from oz which is close enough to get me through most everything I need to know. I bought the camera in korea for a smoking deal but have already had problems with it which I sent to japan to get fixed for free. Whew! It was an expensive fix. Just got it back and have put away a few tapes and have read a few books on filming and just wanted to join a newsgroup now to pick peoples brains since I'm a young spring chicken and don't exactly know the ins and outs. I'm working on it though. So, hi, go canucks and I'll be chatting later....hopefully to someone who also has a 2500.

Welcome, Lisa! (The MX350 is a PAL cam only. There was never a NTSC version made, even in Japan. ) The MX2500 is a Japanese/Korean model---and called the PV-DV952 in North America.

Welcome aboard Lisa! Good to have you with us. It doesn't matter
that you're a "young spring chicken"... we all stood under that
huge ladder looking up..... and one day we also decided to take
that first step! Great you took it and we'll see you around!

Hi guys,
Since you all live in Vancouver, I was just curious if any of you have ever tried Cavision's follow focus? I have already Cavision's matte box and I am very happy with it. I am in the proces of buying a manual lens (Canon's 16x manual servo) and I also need a follow focus. Cavision's follow focus looks great, and would definitely fit onto the rods of my matte box, but I am not sure how the gearing feels etc. I would hate to spend $600 bucks on a follow focus that I am not happy with. Since the Chroziel is too expensive, I might just have to rent one in stead.

I haven't used it, but unless you need it for long term use, you might be better off renting it.

re: Follow focus

I haven't checked it out myself. I came to the conclusion that most of my shots, because of DV's deep focus, allowed me to get away with murder that would've been too soft in 35mm.
Plus the XL1 has a soft look to begin with.

I assume you have a dedicated focus puller? Must be nice. ;)
But I don't see why their stuff wouldn't do the job.

What I think would be more usefull, especially if you have the handgrips, is to have some sort of servo that is automated by a screwon handgrip. Or use I think one of them LANC controlers and the 16xIS.

I'm kind of impressed with the DVX100 having relative focus distances (even if it is 0-99) in the viewfinder. Much easier to get numbers for actors on marks, then just dial in without having to take your eye away from VF and potentially pulling soft during a good take. It would be better if you have real distances, then whip out the tape measure, then pull.

Hi all,

I am thinking deeply about moving to vancouver and recently noticed several folks in B.C. involved in this forum. I would like some general advice on areas of the city to look at for residence, west side, downtown, etc. As well, I feel that this forum may be a good way to make some new acquaintances in Vancouver for future works. I currently operate a small production company and would be looking to get the ball rolling on several shorts immediately upon arriving and settling into Vancouver. Any information is helpful. How is the microcinema situation? Feel free to email me personally.

Cheers,

Are you going to buy a condo/house? If not, rent from the Kits or Kerrisdale area, though rent is expensive. The West End is okay, if you rent close to Stanly Park (west side of, ugh, can't recall the street name. Also, West Van near the Lyon's Gate Bridge has good rentals, expensive, but nice. For cheap, but good, Look around Couquitlem Centre, this is a bit away from downtown, though.

Welcome to Vancouver. Look us all up.

I live in Yaletown but I'm looking to get out. Good sights when it's summer, modern condo living, boutique shopping. But aside from being within walking distance of my day job there isn't much of a community. I much preferred the lifestyle near W. 4th / Kits. Also Commercial Drive ("the Drive") is good if you can get a secure place. These are places that have good grocery shopping and interesting people. You're looking at fairly high rents anywhere downtown and Kits as well.

Hey, I'm short on time, so I'll make this quick.
Live near where you plan on working, unless you can drive in off-rushour times (like me). I'm in Coquitlam, a suburb, where I rent a 4 bedroom house for about the same Keith rents his 2 bedroom condo for downtown. However, it takes me 40 minutes to get downtown on off peak hours, 60 minutes in rush hour. There are lots of great places to live here, and tons of things to do.

The house rental market is tight, since there are 10,000's of Vancouverites renting houses to grow pot in (the penalty here is a small fine, not life in prison like the US), and townhouses are often as expensive as full houses. It all depends what you need. If you HAVE to work downtown, but don't want to live there, I'd look at Burnaby. There are still some reasonable places to rent, and you are 15 minutes from everywhere.

Avoid Richmond unless you like the excitement of dodging bad drivers.

Hi Chris- With the response I have been recieving from really pretty actresses in your area, I wish I could say I was. But there are several board members that are from Vancouver, most notably Dylan Cooper and Keith Loh (Who aren't very pretty at all :).

If you head over to the Lady X website, you can find the latest segment of this web serial submitted by these talented fellows.

No.

Wait, I mean yes!

I'm confused now...

Oh yeah, I'm work out of a cardboard box behind a sushi restaurant in Coquitlam. Moderator Frank Granovski lives in a small tent on Wreck Beach. Keith Loh can be found loitering around film festivals and such, trying to pick up girls with his XL1.

There are at least a few more of us here, plus probably quite a few lurkers.

Frank Granovski

Yes, that's correct, Dylan. However, I have to venture out tomorrow for a box of Fuji miniDV tape, a new razor, suntan lotion and Viagra---oh, and I think I need a new hat. Now if only I can find my cane and shoes---! :)

Hi folks, nice to hear from you all.

My name is First Nations, I have my status card and all, although you wouldn't guess it by looking at me. I'm about 50% native but I have REALLY strong white genes.

For the last 9 years I've been an employment counsellor for youth (particularly high needs, long term welfare recps.) but what I really like to do is write, research and observe.

So I'm changing careers and am going to start making documentaries, science and animal based, maybe the occasional social issue (although as a native I can't think of any social issues that need enlightenment :-)) and training videos (particularly around critical thinking and so on).

I'm not really interested in directing, more in the writing/producing end of things but I recognize that it's silly to make docs and not actually to have made docs.

And that's a little bit about me.

K. Forman
September 2nd, 2003, 08:35 AM
Hey Chris- It sounds like you know exactly what you want to do. I'm not really familiar with Vancouver, but I have seen beautiful wildlife and nature scenes from Canada in general.

If I'm not mistaking, the wolf population is still having a hard time there too?

Keith Loh
September 2nd, 2003, 11:25 AM
No, we are exporting wolves.

The population that is under pressure is our Grizzlies. Poachers have taken to killing the bears and taking out their parts for use in Chinese aphrodisiacs (which is a load of crap, obviously).

Chris Obonsawin
September 2nd, 2003, 06:24 PM
Yeah, there's quite a market in Grizzly parts. As for wolves, the population in the centre and north of the country is large enough that the government is considering a culling operation (which means the hunters think the wolves are competition - whoops did my cynicism show through?)

People in the States have all but wiped out several species. Send some down this way!

John Locke
September 2nd, 2003, 09:19 PM
Don't blame it just on the Chinese. Bear paw, bear liver, tiger paw, etc...those "remedies" and "stamina enhancers" are used all over Asia.

Wish I had a nickel for every time someone recommended eating dog or drinking deer antler tea to improve my overall health. Even had an MD recommend dog once. I passed.

But Keith...the medicinal authenticity of these remedies "have all been proven through stringest scientific research." ;) [Message drummed into the heads of the Asian TV-viewing public]

Keith Loh

Anyway, I think it's barbaric. I believe they linked SARS to the consumption of endangered species as well so I hope there's a lesson in that.

I guess this is the best place to ask this.

I noticed that some of us here are in Vancouver, BC, Canada?

If you are, maybe you can state so here, or email me at eb7g@shaw.ca.

I'm here as well (of course) and am always interested in meeting fellow videographers, possibly to throw some work around as well.

Thats great there's so many of us. I should ask what it is that we do, if it is related to the videography industry.

Myself, I'm actually pursing feature films and TV, including documentaries, but will also be pursuing some video projects in the future. I'm about to get the PDX10.

I'm all for it.

Let's meet either at Subeez (Homer and Smith), a bread garden, or a large coffee shop (i.e. Blendz, at Hastings and Richards).

I'm good most of the time except for Mon and Wed nights for now.
