Rick Bravo July 10th, 2005, 08:27 PM The first link takes you to the typical slate we use in motion pictures & commercials. It is acrylic and is written on with a dry erase marker. You can use press-on letters for all of the pertinent info like Prod#, Director, etc.
The ones I own were of the same design but made by Earl at Panavision.

The second link is for an insert slate. This is a very small slate used when shooting very tight, macro/close up shots. Using this enables you to ID the shot without having to zoom out or pan away from your subject matter. Especially useful when using prime lenses that cannot be zoomed.

I would stay away from the "gray scale" and "color chart" sticks. Any serious DP will use a proper chip chart for timing purposes and the backlit slates are a waste of money. Since the slate is translucent, there is generally enough light behind the slate to light it up. Barring that, you can light your slate with a $5.00 flashlight!

Thanks for the information. Honestly, I didn't know clapboards were that expensive for something that seems so simple (to me).

Greg Boston July 10th, 2005, 11:16 PM I am interested in the AB setup to use with my XL-2. Can you give me a price for the AB components?
regards,

Matthew Wilson July 11th, 2005, 12:22 AM Hey Greg,
I've got a Twin Titan charger and a couple of 30Wh Proformer batteries which are in good condition and hold a good charge. Charger alone is $550 new and will charge any two of the AB batteries simultaneously. I'd take $550 plus shipping for the charger, batteries and XL adapter. pics are here

Dylan Couper July 11th, 2005, 01:13 AM Believe it. I'm looking at those links and getting bummed that I spent $130 on mine. Yes, it is a rediculous price... for a piece of plastic and two wooden sticks.
James Emory July 11th, 2005, 01:36 AM I got my slates made at Panavision too. The great thing about Panavision is that they will custom make them with whatever layout or sticks you want. The standard size slates were about 85.00 a piece with the insert slate being a bit less. They work great and are worth the money. There is a base price but is varies depending on the customization. Rick, did you get yours in L.A., New York or Miami?
Here's a couple of other suppliers that carry slates.

Pete Wilie July 11th, 2005, 08:42 AM I've seen slates similar to the B&H Image-2000 on eBay for around $35.
Yeong Chia July 11th, 2005, 09:38 AM I have 7 pcs SONY BP-GL95, selling USD400.00 for one.

If you're getting a slate.
Think of the ones that have color reference.
It can help you color correct in post.
Josh Brusin July 11th, 2005, 12:47 PM Hey,
Go figure- I need an XL1 or XL2 lens asap. Figured I'd give it a shot. 16x 20x 3x 14x manual 16x manual anything.... but FAST! email me what you have and what you want for it.
Josh
Mike Teutsch July 11th, 2005, 01:17 PM This is a good buy for a 16X Auto! It has a buy it now, which is like $439.00. Barring some quick response here by someone who wants to give away their lens, I would jump on this one.

Dan Mumford July 11th, 2005, 02:24 PM Sell the wife, keep the camera. Just kidding, I know how hard it is to get rid of something when you find yourself having to set your priorities. I've had to do it several times, and each time I kick myself in the pants for parting with an item I really love.
Wish I could help, but I've invested my children's inheritance in an XL2 and accessories.
Dan
Josh Brusin July 11th, 2005, 03:55 PM thanks... I saw that and thought the same thing. I was hoping to find an older 14x manual for around $500 before jumping on that.
I appreciate the Good Eyes!
Mike Teutsch July 11th, 2005, 04:26 PM 14X and 16X manuals are going for more lately, not less. I guess it is just that there are more cameras out there that they work on. Lots of XL2s being sold I guess.
Good Hunting!
Mike
Chris Hurd July 11th, 2005, 05:04 PM Quite right; the older Canon 14x manual lenses (and the Optex-converted Fuji 14x manual lens, when you can find one) typically hold their value at about $900 or so these days.
Patrick King July 11th, 2005, 05:07 PM I was hoping to pick up one of the Canon 3X Wide-angle lens for substantially less than $1150, but it appears they are holding value well also. If the price is too close to full retail though, I'd rather just buy it new.
Mike Teutsch July 11th, 2005, 05:24 PM Hi Chris,
I bought 14X manual and it was pristine, but got the opportunity to trade it for a new 20X from a XL2 and could not pass it up. I still look for another 14x or 16x, and the ability to use it properly. Only time will tell!
Mike
George Loch July 11th, 2005, 06:47 PM I have a PD-150 I am selling for a friend. It's in great shape and has just gone through a sony certified cleaning. The hours meter reads:

Rick Bravo July 12th, 2005, 07:02 AM I've had my slates for years, some from as far back as when I was on "Miami Vice" and the slates were made at Panavision in Tarzana.
Juan, the problem with color stix is that they tend to get dirty and pretty beat up making them useless for any real reference use. If you need a color reference I would seriously suggest using a real chip chart like a McBeth color checker or a true gray scale that is protected and kept clean at all times.
RB
Chris Hurd July 12th, 2005, 08:34 AM Ah, the chip chart. Bravo, Bravo!
How many chips could a chip chart chart if a chip chart could chart chips?
Now I won't be able to dis-associate Rick Bravo from the "Miami Vice" theme music.
Matt Gettemeier July 12th, 2005, 09:42 AM You guys finally made me appreciate my Earl BW slate... pretty much since a month afterward I asked myself why I didn't get the one with the color sticks...
I guess I'll start taking care of this one again... when I shucked out the $65 (filmtools) for it I did feel a little sore...
But it's the same as everything for video. Ever buy a blimp? I've had 3... $200+ seems kind of nuts for an easily crushed little plastic basket... or how 'bout furries? $25 for a micro-cat? Cat toys that LOOK the same are 4 for a dollar...
The say it's easier to make a dollar off a million people rather then a million dollars off one person? Well video gear is somewhere in between.
Henry Cho July 12th, 2005, 10:46 AM up for sale this time around:
canon 14x manual lens in mint condition, with front/rear caps and protective pouch -- asking $700 shipped.
i also have a used DVD, "VASST Light It Right," an overview and how-to on lighting techniques. asking $80 shipped.
regarding the DVD, i have a healthy respect for DSE and the whole crew over at VASST, and if i'm breaking any rules by selling this second-hand, i'll pull this offer.
in any case, thanks for clicking in.
Guest July 12th, 2005, 11:27 AM Sent you an email regarding the DVD.
Henry Cho July 12th, 2005, 11:45 AM dvd has been sold.
Henry Cho July 12th, 2005, 01:51 PM lens has been sold.
Patrick Moreau July 12th, 2005, 01:51 PM I'm looking to sell my ultra fisheye lens and portabace case. Both are no longer needed so I'm sellin gto pay for new equipment.
The fisheye is a century precision optics ultra fisheye adapter MK11. This is the bayonet mount version. B&H part number CEDSFEWASB, the elements are mint but the metal casing does have some scratches. The lens comes with a metal cover for both sides of the lens and when removing the lens caps, they scratch the outer casing. It is purely cosmetic and a direct result of the way it is made. I can provide pictures.
B&H sells this for $799US. I'm looking for $525US with shipping and insurance included.
I also have the portabrace DVO-2U case. It is absolutely mint condition. A VERY nice case, B&H part number PODVO2U. Comes with a universal cradle that fits with velcro onto the bottom of the case so it can be used with a PD170, vx2000, DVX or GL2. It has many well built and position pockets and many other great features. I can provide pictures of this as well.
B&H sells this for $269US, I'm looking for $200.
I'm located in Ontario Canada, just outside of Toronto. Local pickup is possible, I have plenty of feedback on other forums and shipping can be done by any method you choose (although included shipping for the lens is express with Canada Post).
Contact me via email or post here if you would like my contact number.
I also have a PD150 for sale with 230 tape hours. I will be selling it with an Azden SGM-X mic. I'm hoping to sell htis in Canada. If anybody is interested, please email.
Ian Spencer July 12th, 2005, 02:31 PM Hey, will the mk1 fit on a DVX1000? I know the bayonet mounts are for the VX2000, but you never know...
Patrick Moreau July 12th, 2005, 02:47 PM I really don't think so. The DVX is 72mm thread on the lens isn't it? The PD170/VX line is all 58mm so it should be too small. There may be an adapter that fits the MK11 onto larger or smaller cams though.
Brock Boss July 12th, 2005, 06:53 PM Hello All,
If anyone is intersted in a video projector that is appropriate for large corporate events - concerts or other live events that an ordinary projector just can not handle, let me know at thebrockboss@yahoo.com. I have an InFocus 800 series projector that currently sells for over $4,600 at B&H. It is in perfect cosmetic and mechanical shape. I'm open to all reasonable offers. I will e-mail pictures and more information upon request. And yes, the projector truly is amazing.
