I picked the mic up yesterday and did the required scotch test. I have 3 mp3's comparing it to an oktava 012.

The way this mic works is strange.

You listen to the comparison mic and it sounds OK.

The minute you play the Schoeps, the other mic sounds like sh!t.

The files are one at 2.8 and two 1.8 meg. I converted from 48K pcm to 320k mp3.

The mics were set up next to each other and run through my SD 302 mixer into the line in on my marantz pmd670 flash recorder.

I was also able to listen to the Sanken CS-1 and CS-3. Of the two i liked the CS-1 sound better

Since the files are so large I generally wait until notified the mailbox is clear.

When I receive a request I will send the 2.8 meg file first. Followed by the smaller files when i get a confirmation your mailbox will take it.

I have heard your samples. I agree that the difference is significant!

Which mic amplifier did you use? The CMC6 or the CMC6xt with extended frequency response?

I just converted 3 files I had into MP3 . i recorded the Schoeps, CS-1 and CS-3 in the noisy warehouse where i bought my Schoeps. The woest part was the very noisy hanging heaters. All 3 mics samples were better than the actual ambient sound. (It was unpleasant)

The shoeps was better than the CS-1 and CS-3. The off axis rejection as well as the overall accuracy and sound quality was better on the MK41. the CS-1 actually fared better than the CS-3 (IMO)

Yes, it's amazing how you don't know how good or bad your audio is until you
can check it next to something that is real.

Where did you buy and what did it cost?

I was just at posthorn.com and it seems the MK41 "kit" is about
$1200-1300 US.

I bought through a Canadian dealer , RVA in Scarborough, Ontario. I paid the equivilent of 1170 US. I think Trew and Coffey want 1180.

I was just thinking about your advice to me a year ago. Ya gotta spend the money to get the results was the basic message.

The Schoeps sound is unique. It makes the other mics sound bad.

I'm planning on getting another later but may pick up a 416 to compliment the Schoeps and give me an alternative on wet days or extreme long shots. i think you referred to the MKH 416 as the "tractor beam", or was that Ken?

That was I who referred to (in comparison of the ME67 long gun)
as the MKH-416 as being like a tractor beam. Once Ken "drank the
cool-aid" he agreed.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you can always sell an MK41
for close to what you paid and quickly. I think one (in near mint) on Ebay went
for about $1100. That is AMAZING!

How about an MK8 for M/S stereo?

Yup, that's the next addition. If you want, the WHOLE cool kit
consists of an MK41 (hyper), MK8 (fig. 8), special Y cable,
the schoeps preamp (you don't need the mic 'bodies' with this),
the two capsule suspension mount clip, the blimp and windscreen.

I think the last time I got the quote from Posthorn it was about $4,300 US.
Probably a lot more now with the Euro kickin' the dollar.

The thing is though, on most shoots where one is going for dialog,
you really don't need the ambience the MK8 provides IMO.
