View Full Version : Helping Hands from 2006 Niels Neeskens June 28th, 2006, 06:15 AM Thanx Djee Smit, I'll have a look. ps. Ja ik kom uit Nederland, bedankt voor de hulp! Djee Smit June 28th, 2006, 07:56 AM no problem, if you still have any questions, just ask. Where is your production company at / where do you live? Niels Neeskens June 28th, 2006, 08:53 AM My production company is NIE Productions B.V. and is located in Enschede. I live in Almelo and you? Niels ps. Ik ben bezig met een HVX netwerk op te bouwen in Nederland en heb al een leuke groep bij elkaar, ben je ook in bezit van een HVX? Bill Mecca June 28th, 2006, 09:18 AM While it's one project, there are several parts to it. I would break it down. First, production of the video itself and all that entails. Second, conversion to DVD and authoring, and all that entails. Third, conversion to internet format Fourth duplication. You can then tally up the prices and give them a total figure, and remember to include an hourly rate for any changes after things have been approved. And I can guarantee that WILL happen. Since you now have broken it down into segments, you will be prepared in case they opt out of a specific element of the project. For example, say they later decide to have their web host do the conversion to flash, or if they decide not to go that route at all. Bill them along they way as well so you don't wind up waiting for payment. You have costs you will incur along the way. I usually get a retainer upon acceptance of the job, usally 1/3 to 1/2 of the price (for the video production), the rest upon completion of that task, etc etc... as for setting the actual prices, you can base it on a hourly rate for each task involved, shooting, editing etc, and extrapolate that out based on the length of the finished video and your shooting ratio, and how long it usually takes you to edit a video of that length. this is the most difficult part, so you also need to add some extra time into those calculations. at least that is the way I have done it. Djee Smit June 28th, 2006, 11:10 AM that was sort of what I ment yes, only better described :P, But I'm from Breda, and we got 2 canon xl1 with our company Jeff Nelson June 28th, 2006, 03:06 PM We may be shooting a half-hour infomercial in Rio in the next six months. I'll probably take a cameraman and hostess from here in LA but want to get everyone else locally, including sound, gaffer, makeup/hair -- and a lot of beautiful girls in bikinis for a big beach party sequence. So I need some casting help. Anyone familiar with working in Brazil, and able to help advise me, put me in touch with some local contacts so I can figure what things cost and how I should budget? Really need some help on that. Thanks! Nick Hiltgen June 29th, 2006, 05:12 AM There was a guy who used to post here named Shannon Rawls he has a small production company based out of L.A. and I know he's done some music video work. His website is www.shannonrawls.com (or www.cinemahill.com/shannonrawls) there should be a way to contact him through the site. If not contact me and i'll give you his address. Djee Smit June 29th, 2006, 05:51 AM Thanks. I'm also beeing contacted by someone else through this site. A great help. Philip Gioja June 29th, 2006, 08:58 AM I'm right down the creek from your shoot, unfortunately I've booked a wedding for Saturday, but might be free on Sunday if you would be interested in that. Email me if you still need help, you can check out my website too at www.centerstreetproductions.com. I looked at your website -- looks like a fun project. John M. McCloskey June 29th, 2006, 09:02 AM Mossy Oak Productions has an opening for a full time field producer. Must be capable of relocating to Mississippi. Please send resumes to mmccloskey@mossyoak.com Jeff Sayre June 29th, 2006, 11:12 AM Philip: Thank you for your offer. I have sent an email. Let me know if you received it. My forum login timed out and I had to log back in and I'm not sure if the email went through. Jesse Redman June 30th, 2006, 02:23 PM I think that Bill broke it all down pretty well. One thing I like to keep in mind is that my hourly rate needs to pay for many other things than just when I am working on video. It needs to pay the rent (both at home and for the studio), it needs to pay for insurance (both for me, and those that work for me and also liability should someone working for me set the filming location on fire), insurance for my equipment and the cost/replacement of the equipment, time spent not shooting but marketing, making sales calls, paying bills, advertising, etc., etc. Some would suggest that you should at least double to 2 1/2 times what you actually want to make per hour because of the overhead expenses and time you need to spend doing these other, related tasks. All of this (in the US) should be based on a 40 hour week where you get "rewarded" for working longer hours. This should only be tempered by what the market will bear and what your customers feel that you are worth. It is possible to make good money but still not be profitable or wind up making less than a minimum living wage. I just won't set up my equipment and almost pay someone to let me do it, unless I feel that I am involved in either "truly" building my business (I avoid low wage deals where the benefit is more of the same kind of work) or I am involved in something I "truly" believe in or have a stake in. Good Luck! Niels Neeskens July 1st, 2006, 06:21 AM Thanx guys, helps a lot! Greetings Niels David Perrine July 1st, 2006, 05:20 PM That is an extremely useful link. it really simplifies and clarifies the issue. Jonathan Ames July 2nd, 2006, 06:33 PM We're looking to add original music to the shows we're doing at 2nd-Unit.tv which has a new forum in this DVInfo under New Additions. Your music will be used to underscore the episodes we do with various producers, directors and DPs. The mnth of August has Miami Vice's Michael Mann, The Island's Michael Bay, Pirates of the Caribbean's Raphael Sanchez and 24's Rodney Charters. Your music will be featured in the shows with credits and we have a royalty program for the quarterly DVDs and weekly i-Pod segments that are coming in a few months when we gather sufficient content. Please let us know if you create original music that we can incorporate and would like to participate. Oleg Kalyan July 3rd, 2006, 09:54 AM I am shooting wedding in Paris, I need a socond Cameraman with either Canon H1 or Sony FX1 or Z1 for a full day job. Price can be discussed, email me powernow@mail.ru Regards, Oleg. Jim Sofranko July 3rd, 2006, 04:17 PM You can see if a company by the name of Blowup Productions is still in business. I worked with them about 15 years ago and they arranged everything for the commercial we shot in Rio. Maria Rodriguez, who played the Girl From Ipanema in the film, worked with them and met us at the airport. She's great as well. This is old info but they may be still around. Heath McKnight July 4th, 2006, 11:31 AM I need anyone who can help me with some costumes for <a href= http://www.904am.com>my movie</a> that shoots in early August. Simple stuff, actually. Warwick July 8th, 2006, 08:59 AM Hello all, We are currently trying to assemble a cast and crew for a short film project. It is absolutely essential that we recruit talented, technically brilliant individuals to take on the director of photography and production sound mixer/sound designer positions, and I thought, for these particular positions, this would be a good place to look. Below is the email advertising the production which we are currently sending out far and wide, for example to all the students/graduates of (near enough) all the relevant film and film related degree courses in the UK. ... ‘Open Return’ is the title of a new short film, currently in development/pre-production. Principal photography on ‘Open Return’ is set to take place in September (exact shooting schedule TBA), after which time the project will move into several months of post-production, before the final film is distributed for exhibition on the national/international film festival circuit in January 2007. The ‘Open Return’ project is currently seeking talented, driven individuals to join the project, and become members of the cast and crew that will work to force the final film into existence. At this early stage the production is looking to recruit people of all specializations. Positions in the producing side of things, in the technical side things, and in the acting side of things are all available. If you are passionate about filmmaking, indeed about cinema generally, and think that you could be an asset to the production, do not hesitate to visit www.openreturn.co.uk, where you will find full details about the project, including a break down of every available position and role. You can of course also contact the production via email (mail@openreturn.co.uk) or telephone (07921331082). ... Again, if the project sounds intrigueing, if you are interested in taking on the position of director of photography or of production sound mixer/sound designer (or any other position), visit the website, learn more, and contact us ASAP. I will check this thread frequently, and strive to respond to emails promptly. We look forward to hearing from you David R. Warwick … David R. Good luck with your project!! Shedrick Mask July 10th, 2006, 01:29 PM Hi everyone, Do you guys happen to know of website besides here that show freelance production positions? Not to say that the postions you guys have here is not good, I just feel that I need to get more experience on projects in Texas before I start heading out of state. Thanks in advance Shedrick Mask K. Forman July 10th, 2006, 01:36 PM Well, my favorites are Mandy.com, entertainmentcarreers.net (which hasn't done anything for me yet, but I still look), and productionhub.com. If you are really desperate for work with no pay, there is always craigslist.org. For chuckles, you can always see what can be found at this thread- http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=33082&highlight=job+offers Matthew Nayman July 10th, 2006, 02:37 PM I am looking for a Canon EF adapter to try out. I currently use a Redrock M2 and am trying to devise a Relay lens system with EF lenses. Anyone in the Toronto Area wanna rent me their EF adapter for a day? Cool Matt Denis Danatzko July 10th, 2006, 09:47 PM How about Northern NJ? If that would work, I've heard tell that there is a theater in Montclair that can be "hired". Though, not sure if my info is correct, i.e. that you can actually "hire" the theater. If you're interested, let me know and I'll try to scrounge more info. good luck. Jerry Witt July 10th, 2006, 11:37 PM I thought I'd throw my hat in the ring as well. Not only do we have a small production studio in the LA-area, but there is a recording studio here as well. We are also five blocks from the beach. You can see some photos at: http://motioncity.com/subpg/tour.htm David Clark July 11th, 2006, 03:45 PM I am filming a wedding this Saturday. The bride is now requesting a camera in the pews to catch her walking down the aisle, since the church will only allow cameras in the balcony. You would use my 'ol GL-1. Wedding begins at 6:00. You would need to be there from 5:15 to 7:00. How much???? I don't know. Thanks! Greg Boston July 11th, 2006, 07:30 PM David, Give me a call, I can help you out. Ironically I did that very same thing with the F350 last Saturday. A wedding, up in the balcony, then down to the back for the precessional after the ceremony. regards, -gb- Lori Starfelt July 11th, 2006, 08:42 PM We're currently shooting a documentary about opera, and we know popular music as well. David Perrine July 17th, 2006, 09:34 PM We are looking for the following sorts of locations for our project: A cubicle farm, or call center with mini-cubes. The more unpleasant the better, but any will do. A small rustic cottage, the more medeival looking the better, the more secluded the better. Interior rooms that could be used as castle dungeons, a large room fore the throneroom of a castle, and intervening corridoors and staircases. If anyone has access to these sorts of locations (Free!) please let us know! Bill Rankin July 18th, 2006, 05:21 PM I am available in the Houston area to assist as second or third camera in weddings or any other events. Experienced. Equipment: DSR 390, wireless mike (senn.) Lori Starfelt July 18th, 2006, 09:38 PM We're shooting a show this weekend in Northridge and need a third camera for Saturday night (call time is 5pm) and Sunday afternoon. We're hoping to find someone who will allow us to use their camera in exchange for our editing services. You'd have your camera back either Sunday night or Monday morning - your choice. Your services as a videographer would not be required, but if you wanted to join us - you'd be welcome. Here's Brad's editing resume: http://www.bradmays.com/editor.html Demo reel: http://www.bradmays.com/BradMaysDemoReel.mov Brad would be happy to cut either a demo reel or even a short for someone. He normally charges $400 for a reel and rarely under $1500 for a short, so it's a good deal for someone who has footage sitting around. If you'd like to make a counter offer, please do. If you're a beginner videographer who is thinking about doing this, in addition to getting a reel out of it, if you stay around and shoot with us, you'd get an IMDb credit as camera person and a screen credit on a documentary that will likely be broadcast. Thanks. David Perrine July 19th, 2006, 02:32 PM We are looking for the following sorts of locations for our project: A cubicle farm, or a call center with mini-cubes. For more info on the project, check out the thread: ----- Arizona No-Budget Comedy/Fantasy Film ------ or the project website: www.officequestmovie.com Thanks! ~David~ Ben Winter July 19th, 2006, 06:35 PM I live in MD and can't help you with the locations but-- I visited your website and noticed that you might intend to print your finished movie to film. I thought I might warn you, after reading of your budget woes, that depending on the length of the film, a film print will cost you thousands of dollars, is extremely time-consuming (you must go through your movie scene-by-scene with a colorist) and is generally useless unless you intend to generate revenue (assumedly enough to pay back the price of the film print) at a local theater (which depending on your location can be very difficult and expensive to rent out). Just a heads up. I'm happy to start making tea as long as I can work my way up in the project development side of a production company. Does anyone know of any publications that will advertise job opportunities in this field? Thank you Alex Butterfield Heath Vinyard July 22nd, 2006, 03:02 PM Hey all. I'm looking for advice for an upcoming short that I'm doing. I'm hoping there's a no budget/no insurance set I can rent for 2 days. Most set rental requires 1M worth of insurance, which seems to be about $2700. Does anyone know of a place up in/around LA that maybe pads the insurance cost in the bill, like when renting lighting equip? I'm specifically looking for a hospital and motel set. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |
