I'm going inro the city tomorrow and may buy some monitors. I have 2 options. By powered or buy passive and use a high end very neutral Brit preamp and amp.

Scenario one
I have a Quad (not 4 channel) 34 preamp and a 306 torroidal power amp. The amp is a 50 (British) watts per side, the preamp has minimal controls with volume, input selection and a frequency tilt. this is a precision unit and just gathering dust.

I was looking at the Tannoy Reveal or the Yorkville monitors.

I don't think this amp/preamp would colour my output but i'm not sure.

Scenario Two

Buy the Yorkville powered monitor. The specs look to be ok

Since I already had a good Rotel 60 watt stereo amp, my powered vx unpowered choice was easy.

I listened to a lot of monitors (didn't do me much good, I don't know what to listen for) and then went with a pair of KRK K-ROK monitors (look like a slightly truncated pyramid face-on) for which I paid $300 to the Guitar Center. They were on sale.

They made a massive difference to my audio work althought think anything would have been a great improvement over what I had been using.

Now that I have a few years of experience with the KRKs, I'm just as impressed with them now as originally. Tight bass, clear highs, and coloration (who knows)?

I have a slightly rectangular edit room filled with equipment. My friends claim it reminds them of a submaring. Anyway, I don't have much trouble hearing subtle stuff (for my old ears) and don't think I have too many room-related problems.

If I had the $ for a set of Genelecs, I'd have gotten them. I've used a full array of their monitors in a sound design studio in San Francisco. Very very nice indeed.

I guess it's scenario one, now to make up my mind about which monitor. I know what you mean when you talk about A/B ing them.
We're going for the passive, now which brand? Any advice??
