I have a Canon XL1.
I just moved my computer and the Firewire link between them stop working. I figure it to be something with cable or card. I hope it has nothing to do with my cam.

But just to be sure, if you put a firewire cable in your cam without it being connected to a computer, does it still say DV IN in the viewfinder?

So only cam and cable, no computer. Does it still say DV IN or nothing happens in the viewfinder?

If I remember correctly DV IN is always on with my XL1S. But
I'd have to check that to be sure. I'm currently not at the place
where my camera is.

Try different cables / cards if possible to see where the problem
most likely is.

Another thing you can try is copying cam to cam. If that works you can elminate cam as being the source of your problems.

One thing to realize is that the firewire connector is somewhat delicate. I always use a 'hairball' to relieve stress on the firewire cabling by securing it to the front handle belt.

I'm quite sure it's the computer (or I pray to god it is) but I just wanted to rule out the cam before I move on down the troubleshooting lane.

I don't have another cam, so I can't transfer.

But I had to reinstall a friends computer one time. He had the same issue I have now. It didn't even help pulling out the card and re inserting it installing it all over. But when I reinstalled windows it worked.

I hope I have the same problem..

Try this:

Go to device manager
Right click on the firewire port
Choose uninstall
Shut down the computer
Unplug the power cord
Remove the firewire card
Switch on and boot windows
After disk activity has stoped, shut down
Unplug the power cord
Insert the firewire card
Switch on and boot windows
After disk activity has stoped, go to device manager
Check if firewire port is OK (no yellow exclamation point)
Connect the firewire cable
Switch camera on
Windows should detect the camera
If windows detects the camera you should be OK to capture
