Anybody know if the direct to disk system 'FireStore" works with the JVC?

Not in HD mode. It may be compatible in DV mode.

The FireStore is for 25megabit DV only so far.

Perhaps Matt can expand upon this soon.

But isn't the HD stream encapsulated INSIDE a 25 mbps DV
stream? If so, it **might** work (not saying that it will!), right?

Well, the frame structure is still very different. The bottom line is that if it is at all remotely possible, it would still require some form of system software upgrade to accomodate the unique file format of the HD10. That is one area where the FireStore interface stand out amongst the others, in that it the system software is user upgradeable, should Focus come out with an update. I think that is part of why the FireStore FS-3 is such a good investment.

The good news is that Focus Enhancements is very proactive in listening to comments and requests from all of the users out there. It's always nice to see Focus at all of the shows too, again they always make it a point to listen and take note of what the customers want.

Perhaps when the HDV format becomes more supported by the NLE manufacturers and when we start to see some real useable HDV cameras, then we may see it supported by FireStore as part of a future system software upgrade.

Not at all! HDV format uses an MPEG2 transport stream. This bears no relation to DV format other than the tape cassette used is the same.

Yes Bob, agreed - as I stated in my reply, two different 'formats'.

The HD10 does also have the option to output DV via firewire - although I question why anyone would buy the HD10 just to use it as a DV cam. The only tangible merit of that camera is the capability to generate an HDV signal.

I spoke to Matt McEwan about this and we will be able to have an answer regarding whether or not any compatibility exists between the JVC HD10 and FireStore after the DV Expo West Expo in LA, which ends December 12.

Please do keep in touch,
