Thanks for the update, Gary.

Is there any word on how long Avid Xpress DV will be supported? I am considering migrating to Avid Xpress DV but am concerned that, as a result of the Pinnacle acquisition, Xpress DV may be dropped soon. Think about it. Its price point puts it up against Liquid Edition 6 and Sony Vegas, which on paper offer more bang for the buck. In today's marketplace, $500 for a DV25-only editor is excessive. When Final Cut Express HD and Sony Vegas 6 can edit DV and HDV for only $299 and $399 respectively, Avid should consider again lowering the price of Xpress DV 4 to unload its inventory while advanced users move on to Xpress Pro and other high-end apps. Call me crazy, but I think $200 is a fair price.

I'm having some issues trying to capture footage from my XL2 using Avid Xpress Pro. Here's the rundown.

Windows XP recognizes my camera when I plug it in and I am able to capture video using the crappy built-in program that comes with windows (movie maker?)

Premiere Pro recognizes my camera and I am able to control the camera like a deck, but I usually get errors when I try to capture.

Avid Xpress Pro 5.0 does not recognize my camera at all.

I googled the problem, and the only information I could find was a database of cameras that Xpress pro 5.0 supports. The XL2 was indeed listed as being supported...so I have no idea what the problem is.

Has anyone else been able to get XpressDV or Xpress Pro to recognize their XL2? And if so, were there any special steps you had to take?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

No help, I know... cause I'm not running 5.0, but 4.31 sees my Canon. Should be in your pull down list in 'deck configuration', is it not there?

Matrox is a paper tiger imho. Avid is in most newsrooms internationally and most movies are cut on their systems. As long as they keep providing the product, the market will remain theirs. The pinnicle deal is simply to have a product at the consumer/prosumer level.

I was planning to buy their stocks the day before it dropped. Lucky that I did not buy it. I always get the impression that Avid is leading the broadcast industry and the increase demand in HD will lift Avid to new highs.

Anyone working in Network TV, etc. Are broadcasters planning to pour much money in HD equipment, or most are HD well equipped already??

Ken,

I also subscribe to a couple of investment tools/newsletters. I was really wanting to get a sense from people who use Avid tools about whether they thought Avid was loosing its "industry standard" position.

I think the stock is quite under-valued, but whether they regain value lost during the Pinnacle buyout depends on the viability of their product line. And since Avid is the name-brand and the product, I thought I'd ask folks who use it if they thought the company was on the way out or on the way up.

I work part time and the CBS station in WY, it is a very small market. In our new building and conversion to an HD system, FCP-HD is currently the system we are going to employ. Being a PC guy I'm looking forward to FCP but not working on a mac. Several of the other stations seem to be going that route as well. However we will still be doing tape-to-tape as the primary edit solution as its still the fastest way to go.

Hi there everybody.
I am in need of some advice & hope you can help.

I recently invested in a new NLE system & Avid Xpress DV software to do some serious editing work with, and so far i've been unable to actually use it properly as i've encountered some problems.

First of all, I haven't been able to capture video from my Camera (AG-DVC60) using Avid's capture/digitize tool, which at first could have been because I was using my Motherboard's onboard FireWire card. I therefore have now got the Avid-approved PYRO PCI 64 FireWire card, and still i'm having problems. Can anybody give me any assistance with this?

Secondly (and perhaps more importantly), when using existing video & sound files with Avid (I can capture video & sound using a different program, PowerDirector), no sound can be heard at all. This is an odd problem, as i can see the audio levels on Avid's audio meters moving up and down, and yet the audio can't actually be heard!
I know that the audio does work out of the PC though, as it works when using PowerDirector and when playing a CD with Media Player. One possible reason could be that I do not have a seperate sound card for my PC (the Motherboard has a built-in one i believe?) - could this be why i can't hear anything from Avid? It may have nothing to do with that at all, and if so I can't work out what the problem is.
If anybody can help me out with this problem i would be exremely grateful, as right now i've got almost $2000 worth of stuff which i can't use!

I thankyou for taking the time to read this post, and I sincerely hope you can help me out.

Many warm regards,
Alan

Alan,

I'm a 'filmmaker' not a computer tech... so I'm not real good at talking about boards being in the right slots etc. Having said that, yeah, you might need an independent sound card. About 35 bucks should do it, for a sound blaster. But check your window settings first, and make sure your audio is enabled.

Under the capture settings, you have to configure the device. Not sure if your camera is listed, but if not, choose 'generic dv device'. You may or may not have camera controll with the capture tool.

Your best bet for technical questions, is on the Avid forum. Check systems specs for soundcard recomendations. www.avid.com

Be forwarned. RTFM first, and do a search before posting questions. It can be a real burn for a newbie who asks something that can be found on page one in the manual.

Maybe Avid Xpress is trying to play the audio out through firewire. If your DV camera's LCD thing is closed, you may not be able to hear the sound.

(This can happen with FCP anyways.)

Things you can try:

1- You can try the free program DVIO to help isolate the problem.
2- What is the error message?
Try searching google, and the avid-l mailing list or other avid resources (i.e. the avid website, their support pages, and they might have a forum).

Thanks for the replies!

Firstly to do with the Capture problem, there is no error message as such, it just states that there is no deck available, and no signal present. I can get around this problem though i think as i can capture video using other programs and import that into Avid. I would like to and will try to solve this problem though as i'd like to capture with Avid if i can.

Secondly, the sound problem. I don't remember seeing any Sound Card requirments on Avid's website for Avid Xpress DV, as i based my new PC purchases based upon the stated requirments, which is why i hoped it would work!
The audio simply is not "emerging" from Avid, even though i can see it's there, and even though it comes out of other programs. I have tried to import video and audio into Avid (when the camera is not even connected) and when Avid is the only program running, and yet it does not give out any audio to hear. Does anyone know why this might be, or have any other suggestions on how to get the sound to come out? As if i can get this right, then capturing with Avid is a problem i can get around, but without sound from Avid it's useless!

Once again, thank you for taking the time to read this and for helping me out, i really do appreciate it.
Warm regards,
Alan

I have purchased Xpress Pro and want to know if anybody has been successful in using a non-supported video card that Avid doesn't suggest. My new Dell is a 3.2 P4 with 2.5gb Ram and the typical integrated video card. The problem is that it comes with the new PCI Express bus and no AGP. Well, the PCI Express Quadro cards that Avid requires are at least $600 where as the AGP's are available starting at $250. Has anybody been able to use a high powered ATI or Envidia card without any drag or is the software designed just for the Quadro series?

I'm having a hard time trying to find learning material for Avid Xpress Pro. My local library nor my high school library has anything. I also tried amazon, but didn't pick anything up. I know nothing of Avid software, I have some previous experience with Adobe software. And also, what is the learning curve for Avid, I'm 17 years old btw.

We have customers getting very good results with the PNY Quadro 540 card $249.95

We haven't got the video output via the breakout box 100%, but the card works great as a dual VGA for Xpress Pro http://www.videoguys.com/PNY.html

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sept. 9, 2005–Avid Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ : AVID - News) today announced that it expects to deliver native HDV editing and workflow support in its PC-based Avid Xpress® Pro and Media Composer® Adrenaline™ products by October 17, 2005. Customers who purchase either a Media Composer Adrenaline HD 2.x system with an assurance contract or an Avid Xpress Pro HD 5.x system before October 17 may receive free HDV software upgrades when the release ships next month.

“Although HDV is still relatively new as a format, there’s no question that it is having a significant impact in the marketplace, with early adoption among broadcasters, post-production facilities and independent producers,” said Patrick McLean, senior product manager for Avid. “Our customers have been asking Avid to support this new format, and we’re pleased to announce that we’re delivering it. More importantly, we’ve invested heavily to ensure that our HDV implementation addresses key customer needs such as mixing HDV with DV and other formats in the same timeline in real-time. When they begin working with HDV, they’ll have the same kind of seamless workflow experience as they do when working on an Avid system today.”

“I’ve been beta testing HDV on Avid Xpress Pro for over a month, and one of the best things is that my workflow hasn’t changed at all. Avid has clearly put a lot of thought into this implementation - they simply understand how professionals need to work,” said David Benjamin, an editor for IFILM currently working on Team Extreme, a film project for Fuel TV. “Plus, with Avid’s rock-solid media management, script-based editing, open timeline, and real-time effects capabilities, I feel truly empowered as an artist - which is more than I can say about the experiences I’ve had using other HDV-ready NLEs.”

Pricing and Availability

The planned October release of HDV support will be for PC-based systems, and Avid will offer HDV as a free upgrade to customers who purchase either a Media Composer Adrenaline HD 2.x system with an assurance contract or an Avid Xpress Pro HD 5.x system before October 17, 2005. Avid Xpress Pro 4.x customers can purchase the HDV upgrade for $50.00 USMSR

I was very unhappy with my 15" powerbooks performance with editing... I generally work bigger projects, and once I get to a certain point it takes so much loading to make the slightest change.

The 15" stats were: 1.25 GHz, 256 MB ram and 80 GB hard drive

I'm now moving to a 12" powerbook for the convenience of space, and the stats are: 1.5 GHz processor, 1.5GB ram 80 GB hard drive

My question is should this be much better for editing? The processor is higher, and the Ram is over 5 times faster. Will this be ideal for editing with Avid?

Greg Boston
September 17th, 2005, 08:09 AM
It's a general rule of thumb among NLE software that increasing ram helps increase performance. The more 'ram render' preview you can do, the less time it takes for you to be able to view it. So, max out the ram as much as possible.

Well 256MB RAM is really inadequate for everything on a powerbook, and certainly not enough for video editing, but that can be easily upgraded. However, with reasonable amounts of memory I don't think you'll notice any speed increase from a 25mhz faster CPU. I don't think the internal drive matters a lot - you shouldn't be putting your video there anyway - get a fast firewire drive for that. We have a couple 12" powerbooks at work and they are nice little machines for everyday things, but I would never want to use one to edit video. For one thing, the screen doesn't have high enough resolution (1024x768). It also lacks the PC card slot which means you can't have two independent firewire busses (a firewire PC card costs about $30).

I have no experience with Avid, but have edited with FCP while travelling using my 15" Powerbook G4/1ghz with 1.25GB RAM. It worked fine, but there were certainly performance trade-offs. The problem is that the gap between Apple's desktops and laptop computers has gotten huge. If you buy a laptop you're essentially settling for 3 or 4 year old technology. This is the main reason Apple is switching to Intel, since IBM failed to provide a G5 or dual processor laptop chip. Hopefully we'll see the gap start to close within the next two years.

In the meantime, the Powerbooks are very nice computers but they don't represent a good value if you're running demanding software like video applications. As long as you can accept the tradeoff and pay the premium price that a laptop commands this is fine. But unless you absolutely must have portability they don't make a lot of sense IMO.

If you really want to stick with a laptop I suggest you pop a 1gb chip into your open memory slot on your 15" powerbook. The 12" won't be any faster, you'll lose money on the trade, and I don't think you'll be happy with the smaller screen. Is it really worth it to save a couple inches of space?

Greetings

I am having problems exporting my video in Avid to MPEG2. I look through all the settings but do not see an export for MPEG2. Any other Avid Express Mac users have this problem. I use Avid Express 3 on Max OS 10.2?

I know I can export a mov. file and use quicktime to convert to MPEG2 but is there a way to get it right out of Express? We use DVD Studio Pro to make our DVD's but now I am have problems getting the MPEG2 files.

Any help welcome.

Richard Alvarez
September 19th, 2005, 11:10 AM
Marcus,

I don't use a mac, and I cut with XpressPro, not XpressDV so I'm not 100% sure about this, but the interface should be the same as on the pc.

You don't export as mpeg2. You export your QT reference file to your compression software. You should have gotten a copy of Sorenson Squeeze (unless you have the educational version?) If not, then you will need some compression software. Export your QT file or QT reference file, compress to whatever you want, Mpg2, Flash, WMV... whatever, and you are good to go.

(In the avid menu, click on the sequence in the bin, click on 'send to' and the compression system you use should come up. Remember to mark the sequence on the timeline with an in and out at the beginning and end. And indicate which or all of the tracks to export)

Marcus Farrar
September 19th, 2005, 12:54 PM
I am going to try this, thanks. For you there is no way to export MPEG2 file directly from Avid.

I also use FCP and I just export the MPEG2 file and then I am ready to put it in DVD Studio Pro for a final DVD. It seems like an extra step to do it the way you are explaining. If it is the only way I guess thats it.

thanks again
Marcus

Richard Alvarez
September 19th, 2005, 01:07 PM
Marcus,

Yes, for me the 'extra step' is pushing the 'send to' button. At that point, the qt file is sent to Sorenson, which automatically opens with the file in place. I then set the compression settings I desire (or leave at default) and press "Squeeze". Sorenson then compresses the file and I have the results ready to import into ReelDVD or any other authoring software.

If you are dragging and dropping an effect onto the clip, then you might need to zoom on the timeline, so avid doesn't think you are trying to drop the effect on top of an existing effect.

Hi there, I am switching over to editing HDV in avid xpress pro HD, and color correcting in Combustion, instead of Adobe premiere to Adobe AE.

My problem is, the latest release of Avid, supports HDV, and captures the stream natively, but wraps it in an MXF wrapper. Now Combustion wont recognise this MXF format, and renaming it wont help. When i have finished my edit, what i want to do is render (consolodate) all of the clips in the timeline with uncompressed versions, which the AAF file will refer to. Then i can merrily import into combustion using Automatic Duck, and the AAF file, with no problems, while retaining my individual clip for color correction etc.

Does anyone know if this is possible. I am not able to consolodate to anything other than DNxHD 120. Now I fully understand that avid won't be able to play back the uncompressed video on the timeline, however this is not important, as at this stage the edit will be locked.

If anyone knows of any other way of getting HD from avid to Combustion while keeping edit points, I'd love to hear about it.

Thankyou in advance, Nick

OK folks. We are trying to install our new JVC GY-HD50 deck pretty far from our Avid Xpress Pro HD system. We are running the 422 line about 120' from the deck to the HP Avid is loaded on. Latest update from Avid. Machine has plenty of power and is fine with our other decks in the same remote location including 500a digibetas, DSRs and BVWs. Still works just fine with them but when we connect the JVC HD50 deck for testing, we get a few mouse clicks and then it tells us there is a communication error and bails out.

If I tell it to check the decks again, it's fine for another few mouse clicks and the communication dies again. We are able to use several deck types and get the same results. I suspect the run for the 422 control is too long but the chief insists it's within RS422 specs. It just seems like the signal might be a bit weak. We run the 232 port through a Rosetta Stone 2/8 to get to 422 by the way. We have spares. I'll swap it out to see if it's drivers are weak.

Anyone else having troubles remote locating a JVC GY-HD50 deck?

I'm going to get a laptop for video editing on Avid Xpress DV (for windows). What are the minimal specs I'd need for my laptop so that I won't be running into problems. I know that Avid Xpress is a bit fussy with hardware and requires certain configurations. This will be my first laptop and I'm not sure that the research I've done for desktop will be relevant.

If anyone here is using Avid Xpress DV on their laptop and are happy, I'd really appreciate it if they give me their opinion and set-up.

Thanks.

Thanks Richard. The thing is, this list seems a bit our of date. for example:

Dell Inspiron 5160 3.2GHz Pentium 4.
Includes integrated graphics and 1394 port

I called Dell and asked them about this model. It turns out this line has been replaced by the 6000 series. Does this mean that the Dell Inspiron 6000 is good with avid too? i'm not sure.

On the Dell internet site I put together a notebook based on the Dell Isnpirion 9300. These are the specs:

Inspiron 9300 Intel® Pentium® M Processor 740 (1.73 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB)

Display: 17 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen XGA+ Display

Memory: 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz 2 Dimm

Video Card: ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X300 64MB HyperMemory™

Hard Drive: 100GB Hard Drive

Network Card: Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem

CD/DVD Drives 8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer

Wireless Networking Card: Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g, 54Mbps)

It came out to about $1200. Will Avid Xpress Pro be happy with this? Cuz it's really even a bit over what I planned to spend.

Thanks

Richard, You'r not alone. They are here, like me, just silently watching and waiting. We've all got aour tails between our legs waiting for Avid to finally support HDV 24p.

Been to the Avid forms. Also been in touch with JVC. They are interested in this issue. Seems we also can't control the deck at all, same symptoms, over firewire from 4 feet away. I think control in our deck is SNAFU.

We, and quite a lot of post and broadcast facilities often run quite long stretches of 422 for remoting decks from control rooms to tape bays, etc. I haven't read it in a while, if ever, but the chief says 422 specs should be good to quite a bit longer than we are trying. Hence JVCs interest in ours not working I think.

Still testing and researching with JVC on this one.

Sean

Adi:
If you live in the US and you can wait, wait until a hot deal on a Dell laptop pops up. Sometimes there are $750US off Inspiron coupons.

Your user shows Israel for the location, so you may not be able to get such deals in your country.
