I couldn't find the answer on this forum. may be a stupid question...

am picking up my HD10u tomorrow (i think) and am wondering how to view the footage directly from the HD10u without a DVHS deck or an HDTV monitor. I do have a couple 17" LCD monitors (for editing).

do i have to capture everything into the computer first? Any possibility of connecting the hd10u directly to the montors?

Your HD10 includes a cables to send component, S-Video or composite out.

I may be wrong, but I think if you're shooting on the camera, you can't (and I may be wrong) see the image in HD, even on a true HD monitor.

would a component to DVI (my monitor) adaptor work? does it exist?

The only output from the camera, while shooting live, that is in HD resolution, is from the firewire output, and that is in MPEG2 TS format. So to view that live you have to put the firewire signal through an MPEG2 decoder, such as is in a JVC 30k DVHS deck or a Samsung T165 OTA HDTV reciever, and connect an output from one of these to an HD res capable monitor (like a standard computer monitor). That's the only way I know how to do it.

I did notice that Compusa here are selling small 17" 16:9 HD res capable flat screen LCD TV's for under $1000 now if that is of any interest, they have component inputs too.

I have been using the ViewSonic N1700w as a monitor while recording, which has YPbPr input. I believe the signal is 720p.

BTW the same article says that the MPEG-2-TS stream is 29.97 fps, I thought it was 30?

The article at this URL makes it sound like you can output 1080i, 720p, or 480i while recording. At NAB this camera was hooked up to an SD monitor so everyone could see what it looked like. There was a couple second delay, but it was working.

When I am filming we always have a field monitor to see what everything looks like while shooting. Can I do that with the HD10-U?

No delay from the component out that I am noticing. I would like to know if the output I am getting from y Pb Pr is SD or not.
