My problem is that I can't capture dv-video with my new MSI(microstar) Firewire card.

THIS IS MY HARDWARE:
* I recently bought an MSI firewire card (aka: IEEE 1394).
* I use the included 1394 cable.
* The DV-camera is a Canon XM1 miniDV.
* I use WIN-98SE (also tried W2k)
* I have tried both Ulead MSP and Adobe Premiere as software.

The installation af the card was easy. Windows picked it up immediatly and installed the drivers. I can find the card in the
devicemanager and it looks ok to me, no exclamationmark or anything.

This is what I did:
The cable between Card - Camera inserted
Intalled Ulead Media Studio Pro.
Started Ulead capture program.
Started the Camera.
The program then complains about not finding the capture device.
Might be something wrong with the program so I installed Adobe Premiere 6.0
Tried to capture video from inside Premiere and.... the computer crashed (rebooted itself).

What can be wrong?
Do I need updated drivers, and where do I find them?
Is the canon XM1 camera not compateble with the firewire card.(it does have a IEEE 1394 connection)

1. Plug in and turn in camera.

2. Boot up computer

3. Start NLE app

4. begin capture

Thanks but it doesn't work.

I tried it both with win98 and W2k with same result as before. There is one more strange thing... When camera is turned on, the computer freezes up in intervals (every 1 second or so). I have read a post somewhere else of a similar problem on another site also with a canon camera, but there was no solution to be found.

I am leaning towards the (cheapish...) MSI Firewire card as cause of the problem. Is it a common problem that a firewire card is not compatable with certain cameras?

Any input on this problem is welcome

First of all, stick with Win2000. Once you get everything working you'll find that Win98 just isn't stable enough to handle the high loads of video editing. It also can't handle more than 256MB of RAM which is the bare minimum for video editing.

Try another card, like the DV Pyro. A few people here are using it successfully with Premiere, Vegas Video and XDV

Change card to Pyro DV. When starting Ulead capture go to setup and then device driver. here it will be located some drivers,as TI amd MS. PyroDV card working with TI (Texas Instr)
MS (Microsoft) it do not work with MS driver.

PS: Ulead do not crasch anytime but Premier, keep off.

Change your firewire card.

I have an el cheapo TI OHCI compliant firewire card, works great.
It might be good to check for another card indeed. I would not
buy one of those expensive editing ones if you don't need it
(don't know if the Pyro DV is one). A general TI based OHCI
compliant card should work.
