Hi Chris,

Nice work - can you tell me if there is a noticeable improvement in picture quality between the FX1 and the Z1? I've been using an FX1 for about four years and I am looking to upgrade my camera, but here in the UK the Z1 is a lot more expensive than an FX1 etc.

Matt:

Frankly, I don't think you get that much more by going to the Z-- unless you need the XLR inputs, and a few other features... I've worked around them, and frankly I prefer my FX1 just because I a used to it.

This film was shot 95% with the FX1, because that is my camera and I was shooting the A camera, and I just know it better. The Z1 has some benefits, and couple extra menu choices. I think the LCD is a bit better, and the of course it gives full view, and avoids the overscan issues we have with the FX1 LCD. That can make a difference in a shot with a boom over head. I know there is black expansion setting on the Z, that the FX1 doesnt have, but frankly, when we shoot the two together, in most situations, I can't tell which tape came from which camera.

For about a year I was messing with the HV20, but for the last 8 months I have gone back to shooting the FX1. A new toy is now in town,,,, I got a Canon 5d Mark II, but I wonder if after fighting it a while, I'll come back to the FX1 again. These are great cameras still !

I've even shot a few film using the much maligned Cineframe 24, and used Cineform to convert to 24p, and have been surprised at how good it does, considering the bad rep.

Thanks Chris

I do find the FX1's masked viewfinder image annoying, especially if I am shooting for web video and more appears on the screen than I could see on the viewfinder.

Maybe I should look at the Z7 as an alternative.

Hi Chris,

I have an FX1, which camera settings were used? Ex. shutter speed ect. I shot at 60 and the screen shots do not seem that sharp.

Best Regards,

Alex
