Might be several things.

1. Do you hear the sound when playing back the audio on the camcorder?

Yes
Check your mic gain, mic cable, mic battery(if your mic has one. The standard mic does not.)

No
Problem is in you computer or editing package

2. Problem only happens on computer?

Make sure editing package supports the audio weight you have selected (16 bit or 12 bit).

Set your editing package to same audio weight as the camera is set for.

Make sure you editing package supports 12 bit audio. If not be sure to keep the cam set to 16 bit audio mode.

Which editing package (Final Cut/ Vegas/ Premiere) are you using and what operating system (Windows/Mac) are you using? I think your problem has something to do with you PC's configuration.

I still think your problem is with the computer's configuration. Make sure you are using a recommended firewire board for Premiere. Select good audio and video cards. Keep the minimum number of programs on (they can slow down the PC is they are kept running). For a minimum have 512MB RAM.

Use one manufacturer with your cam as this will probably limit dropped frames problems.
