I was wondering if there was a way in which the xl1s could be set up as a webcam for monitoring a location from a remote location?
View Full Version : Using XL1S as a webcam - Dont laugh Stuart Wechsler October 17th, 2003, 01:11 PM I was wondering if there was a way in which the xl1s could be set up as a webcam for monitoring a location from a remote location? Alex Dunn October 17th, 2003, 02:14 PM Yes, well, I know the GL2 can so I'm going to assume anything with firewire output is the same. You will need an OHCI compliant firewire (IEEE 1394) card in your PC, and have some WEB cam software. The rest should be in your XL1s manual. It's not laughable, some people just want the best. Now if you bought a HD 24P Cinealta for a webcam, that would be funny! Robert Poulton October 17th, 2003, 02:54 PM goto www.canondv.com they have some software that you can download that is suppose to make it see the camera. Who knows if it works. I couldn't get mine to work. Rob Adrian Douglas October 17th, 2003, 10:01 PM Canon's DV messenger does work but only with WinXP. Andrew Petrie October 20th, 2003, 10:08 AM I use WebcamDV, take a look. http://www.orangemicro.com/webcamdv.html I've looked at Canon's site before for DV software/drivers/something for Windows to recognize but to no avail... Murad Toor October 21st, 2003, 02:35 AM If you have iChat AV on both sides the XL1s-as-webcam would work. But if you have a few extra bucks, there are tilt/pan/zoom webcams out there for Windows. I apologize for not recalling the links. Tilting, panning and zooming would be handy if what you're doing is monitoring your home. Chris Hurd October 21st, 2003, 07:10 AM Canon's DV Messenger requires a Windows Messenger account set up through MSN in order to work properly (but it will let you use an XL1S as a webcam). Stuart Wechsler October 21st, 2003, 07:13 AM There is no solution that will allow me to use it on an apple computer. Or is there..... Robert Poulton October 21st, 2003, 01:20 PM If you try to use Virtual PC for the Mac it should work. I know that several programs work while running Virtual PC. Rob John Locke October 21st, 2003, 06:53 PM As they've said earlier, I believe iChat will work. Here's one program you might want to download and try. (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/wuffcam.html) And here's another. (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/svideo.html) And yet one more. (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/internet_utilities/keycamx.html) And there's more there to choose from. Bryan Mitchell October 22nd, 2003, 03:10 PM I have windows XP. All I have to do is plug the camera in, and it works with netmeeting, and all my other web programs :-D I havn't installed anything else. |
