The only mystery will be whether it's in game 5 or 6 when they blow it. hehehehehe. Maybe even in 4 if the Marlins stay hot.

And the Yankees in 4. Safe bet. Better the Sox had lost to the A's then the Yankees, hehehe.

FL and NY. It will be a great world series.

At least by saying "Cubs choke," you acknowledge that it would be a huge upset for the Marlins to win, which they won't.

Hey, hey.

Ya' know, it's funny here in STL... everybody who's a Cardinals fan seems to hate the Cubs... personally I don't get it?

I went up to Chicago a month ago and I think the reason STL fans hate Chicago's teams so much is because our heads would explode if Chicago was a way better city that ALSO had us so completely dominated in sports. For any of you guys who haven't been to Chicago, it is one kick-ass town... unbelievable in fact...

I for one would like to see the Cubs end "the curse"... no offense to you other guys...

HMMMMM, choke?
Let's see, bottom of the 9th, Sammy cranks one way out tied 8-8, now going to the 10th! Win or lose, it's a great game and hell, I'm not even into baseball anymore.
BTW, Chicago IS a great city. Been here just about my whole life and even thought I HATE the winters (I love warm) it is a wonderful place to live. What other town has 2 major league baseball teams, a 6 time world champ basketball team, 2 hockey teams (Blackhawks AND the Wolves) and a pro football team.

I didn't say they were all good just that we had them and the resturants, oh the resturants....the museums, WOW, the entertainment, (shows) and the blues clubs, the best , the absolute best.
For those of us who are old enough to remember the 1968 Democratic convention remember it was the first Mayor Daley that said "If you can't join 'em, beat 'em", or something like that.
A history that is as good or better than any other city in the world.
Sinatra said it best "It's my kind of town"...

GOOOOOOOOOO CUBS!!!!!!!!

Don ;-)))))))

And don't forget that it's the only city in this country you can get an edible pizza. If you can pick it up with your hands it's not pizza, it's tomato sauce on a cracker.

Yeah, they lost but they did make it exciting.

By the way, you need TOTAs to hit a home run (we should keep this somewhat related to video)

Don't forget Lou Malnatis for deep dish!

I know what I'm having for lunch, a good ol' Chicago Style dog! MMMMMMMMMMMM!

Try again tonite :-)

Okay you guys... I've posted a lot of stuff to help others so now I'm going to ask for something personal.

I used to go to Chicago every year for CES... about 8-10 years ago. I got this pizza in a small town... basically a WAY west suburb before you get into Chicago coming from St. Louis... right off the exit is a Fairfield Inn... we're talking about 30 minutes outside of Chicago at the most. I'm mad at myself for not remembering the exit/town.

Anyway, when I went up to Chicago a month ago I wanted to find this pizza place and I drove right to it and the whole freakin' shopping center is gone. The Fairfield is still there though. This place was about 5 miles from the interstate... at the outside of a parking lot. Anyway, the pie was of course thick, with a lemon-dusted crust... basically you got this sharp "bite" in the tastebuds as you first bit into it... then the pie itself had big chunks of tomato rather then simply smooth tomato sauce... really "hearty" pizza with an unusual taste... hungry yet?

So anyway... since the place wasn't there anymore... what was it? When I drove down this road there was all new shopping centers and I couldn't find my pizza place!

Since I can't go back with the hot girl I had then to FULLY relive my Chicago experience I thought I could at least get the pie!

Matt,
Were you driving in on Rte.55?

My daughter and her husband don't live far from the highway and I have a lot of other friends out that direction (I'm fro the northwest suburbs-about 35-40 miles from rt.55 but only a quick 30-45 minute drive-traffic you know) and there is quit a bit going on out in the area you're talking about. Can't really place it but the are other really good pizza joints that surround Chicago not to mention the great ones in the city. Malnatis, Duo, Uno, and a host of others.

Don

Matt Gettemeier
October 8th, 2003, 03:25 PM
Don, yes it was 55... we have Uno here in St. Louis... there is only one exit that has the Fairfield clearly visible from 55... it's RIGHT off the highway... you used to be able to continue 5 minutes down that road and there was the pizza joint... it is no longer there... but as I continued driving I noticed a great neighborhood and superb golf course... do you know the area now?

Oh yeah, I remember the pizza place had a big red roof and it was called "something" hut. Does that help? Just kidding.

BTW I took 3 hours of video with the dvx while I was up there... as I'm editing it down it depresses me to be back in STL... on the other hand though it is a lot cheaper to live down here... On our first night up (we stayed at the Renassiance... highly recommend... book with Orbitz.com and get river view for cheap)... anyway on our first night up we ask some guy in the lobby how the "bar and grill" is across the street... he says "good" so we continue on over to a place I never heard of, "Smith and Wollenski's", and yeah, it was good... although a bit more then the "Sizzler"... ha-ha.

One more thing video related. Everybody should have a polarizer for lots of reasons... it came in freakin' handy at Shedd Aquarium... back home everybody says, "That camera's amazing! You can't even tell there was glass!" Well, it's not the camera that "eliminates glass"... it's the filter.

Don Bloom
October 8th, 2003, 04:48 PM
Matt,
That sounds like it might have been Romeoville and the golf course is called Mistwood. You're right, its a great course, 1/2 links style (open) and 1/2 American style course, trees and hills.

Smith & Wollenski is an awesome steak house. MMMMMMMMM!
In New York, the S&W has/had seating on the billboard sign overlooking the street. I've never been there but some friends were.

I actually don't get into that neck of the woods to often but my daughter and her hubby live out that way not far from where I THINK you're talking about, I'll get ahold of them and ask them if thats the area.

Yeah, you're right about the polarizer, don't leave home without it!
I'll be in touch,
Don

OK Matt,
I might have narrowed it down.

Weber Road has a Fairfield Inn right at the exit, not far was or is a golf course called Naperbrook, one of the few I've not played AND there USED to be a pizza place called Marshalonis (sp) that my daughter said had GREAT pizza.

Hopefully that has cleared up the mystery.

BTW, the CUBS lead 10-0 in the 5th? with Mark Prior pitching and things are looking good.

>>Nothing like a stuffed pizza from Giordano's to satisfy a manly appetite.<<
Is Edwardos still around? They were my favorite source for stuffed pizza when I lived up there. Giordanos was a close second. And don't forget Ronnies Steak palace just off Wabash, with authentic 50s decor and great, affordable steaks, and best of all, heaven on 7 in the Garland building. Best sausage gumbo outside of Louisiana.

BTW, I'm a life long Carndinals fan.
And Chicago is the greatest town in America.
I hope the cubbies make it all the way, but I just don't think it will happen. The fans are certainly more dedicated than the fair weather ones down in FL.

True story
Early 90s, me and my wife take our son out of school for the Cubs second game of the season, playing against St Louis (at Wrigley Field, which is why I wanted to go). A little man comes up and askes if my son would like to be Batboy for the Cubs. We accepted and I had to sit on the Cubs side because of it. His uniform was comprised pieces from different players on the team (including Damon Barryhills turtle neck and someones cleates and someone elses pants....). He got paid 20.00. Next day at work, everybody freaked, saying how hard it was to get that position.
Only in Chicago.

I miss the place.

Don Bloom

Don't know if Edwarduos is still around and IIRC Ronnies was closed a couple of years ago due "Health Code Violations" (they found little varments running around inside and out) but man was it ever the place for cheap GOOD steaks!

second or third inning pop foul, barely into the third base box seats. the fly ball was catcheable except for the cubby fan that tried to snag the ball and caused it to be dropped. with fans like that, the cubbies are doomed.

Don, thanks for the info on all this... I can't wait to get up to Chicago again.

Hey for ANYBODY who reads this and hasn't taken one or more of the boat tours of Chicago... DO IT! My roommate lived in Chicago for 2 years and I've been telling him about tons of stuff he never knew about!

I've said, "How could you NOT already know this?"... and he says, "I never took the boat tours."

If the weather's nice it's the PERFECT accent to a date as well 'cause it only takes about an hour and it's romantic at night...

So anyway I just wanted to post this so that no resident or visitor of Chicago misses out on something so cheap and informative... Once somebody SHOWS you the intelligence of architecture and entire city planning you realize that they did EVERYTHING the hard way 'cause it resulted in such a well thought out city... perfect for video too! ( I can't wait to see Ken Tanaka's LadyX film since it should showcase a lot of Chicago. )

Maybe the guy that "interfered" with Alou was that dolt-kid from NY a few years ago that blatantly interfered with the Orioles at Yankee Stadium during their last winning season, costing them the series and a perennial fourth place finish (thank goodness for Tampa)! Not that I'm bitter or anything!

Joe Carney
October 14th, 2003, 11:40 PM
Mark, he didn't even look sorry he did it. What a scuz ball. they had to 'escort' him out of the stadium to avoid getting killed. And those sucky announcers were actually trying to apologize for him. Scuz ball, low life interferer. What a loser.

Damn, they even had me beleiving. Maybe they can recover and get them in the last game.

Ken Tanaka

I don't know how I've missed this thread for a week.

Joe: Yes, Edwardo's is still around and cranking out deep dish by the ton. Due's has become, perhaps, the most popular pizza place for tourists. Connie's and Lou Malnati's have the most popular pizzas for locals. Giordano's has slipped several notches in the past years since they became a corporate chain and basically serve frozen pizzas.

Re: Cubs, I'm sick over game 6...along with millions of others around the country. Contrary to the Fox commentators' point of view, the 8th inning disaster had little to do with the kid interfering with Mo's catch. It had everything to do with Mark Prior's pitching breaking down early.

I guess we'll have to see if Kerry Wood can keep the Marlins in check tomorrow night. Geez, it's like a traffic accident. You can't stand to watch but you can't help yourself.

Don Bloom
October 15th, 2003, 05:43 AM
I might have reached out for the ball also. I don't think the kid even realized he had done it.

Did it cost them the game. Not in my opinion. Baker should have lifted Prior 1 or 2 hitters before, then there wouldn't have been a wild pitch, and maybe Gonzo wouldn't have booted the probable double play ball and maybe we would be celebrating on Addison and Clark. BUT!!!!!! Now they have to regroup and play a 1 game series so lets buckle up and see if they've got what it takes to do a gut check and do it.

Rob Belics
October 15th, 2003, 09:17 AM
It was on the edge of the wall and no interference was called. I agree that more knowledgeable fans would have backed away and allowed the catch but in the excitement you don't always think like a player.

They pick on that one guy but people forget there were three or four fans reaching for the ball. It just happened to hit the one guy's hand.

What's funny is how they say that play didn't lose the game for the Cubs but a minute later they talk about an error that started the rally.

A Red Sox/Cubs World Series would be fun to watch. But I don't want the Cubs to go anymore than I'd like to see the Yankees.

I've been out in the country this week. There was this pig running across the field. When he got as fast as he could go, he'd grunt and jump. Then he'd turn around and do it again, run, grunt and jump. So I shot him.

In the WalMart nearby, Satan was seen returning snow boots.

Come on people! I don't mean to call you out Joe, but your statment is just a perfect example of what I have heard too much. I wanted nothing more than a Red Sox/ Cubs Final, but you know, things happen.

Its funny, because as I was driving in my car today I saw one of those 9/11 stickers that says "We will not forget".... Well, it looks like many people have, and it didn't take long. For a while everyone had perspective on life, and we realized what was important, but not anymore. I don't mean to preach but jeez, enough with the name calling and anger of something so trivial.

The guy is a cubs fan, he coaches little league baseball, he makes an honest living and is a law abiding citizen. He made a mistake, how "stupid" of a mistake it was is a subjective opinion (I feel like he just got excited, like 90% of people would have done he stood up AFTER people next to him stood to grab a fly ball in the stands). But that hardly makes a man a "low life" or a "scuz ball", I tend to reserve names like that for the people who deserve them: theives, rapists and murderers. Also, it seems funny that people talk about him being escorted out like it would have been more fitting for him to be beaten to death in the stands...

So lets all move on, realize that in reality professional baseball is nothing more than some guys getting paid millions to simply play a game, and its all in good fun for anyone to enjoy. I sincerely hope only that some psycho doesn't harm that guy or his family because of one little mistake....

Robbie

Now, being Canadian, I don't care much about baseball, so I don't really have a perspective on the professional game like y'all do (although I like playing it, I find it boring to watch, sorry). I watched the highlights of this game last night though, after reading this thread. My confusion is that this interference really didn't cost them the game did it? The mistakes they made later on is what did them in. From what I see, the public is making this poor bastard into a scapegoat so they don't have to deal with the reality that their team just wasn't the best team out there that night...?

PS, they showed the guys name, face, and house on TV last night... Man, I feel so bad for him. I think I'd move to a different city.

Dylan, you're pretty much right on with your assessment. The Marlin's did not score 8 runs because this guy interfered...instead of an out, he hit a foul ball because the fan hit the ball preventing the catch by the Cub's player. I think its just really hyped up because of what "could have been", fans like to have faith in the fact that if this guy didn't get in the way the whole game would have been different. If I recall correctly, he didn't interfere in game 7, so I wonder whose fault that was? Ok, that was a nasty dig, but a point to be made. That guy interfered on a single play, he didn't squander a 3-1 game lead that the Cubs had in the series.

As for his name, face and house being published/put on air, I think that is rediculous, it serves nothing but to endanger this guy and his family and make his life that much harder. But the good news is that some businesses in Florida are offering to put him up in a beachfront condo for a year all expenses paid (including clothes, etc) down there until things cool down. Again, I just hope this dosen't get any worse than some people being upset and just talking about it.

Robbie

I agree that perspective is a very important thing to retain...even for an old Cubs fan like me. Even with civic pride factored, it is, after all, just a game and an entertainment venue no different than film.

But even I got a chuckle from Rob's line about Satan returning snow boots!

I don't blame that fan for the Cubs losing, just his atttitude about the whole thing. Most of us would have gone for the ball too.

Saw your Yogi quote. Yogi still comes here to my town, the Italian district called "The Hill" where he and Joe Garagiola grew up. It's a close knit neighborhood. He'll walk into his favorite corner bar to visit his friends and their reaction is like a relative visiting instead of a baseball star.
