View Full Version : Death Valley road trip inspired by U2
Scott Gold March 21st, 2009, 01:59 PM Inspired by U2's "The Joshua Tree" album we took a road trip to Death Valley. Don't drive across the desert without it!
We had so much fun I had to throw together some footage and make a video.
Watch on Vimeo: http://twurl.nl/mzbmkm
Shot on a stock XH-A1 using the VIVIDRGB preset.
Marcel D. Van Someren March 23rd, 2009, 10:22 AM Very nicely done! I really enjoyed it. The two of you sound just like U2! :)
Scott Gold March 23rd, 2009, 10:36 AM Thanks man! We had a blast! I'm planning on buying NEOScene soon and I hope that can make my videos even better. I'm sick of editing HDV, it just has no post latitude.
Marcel D. Van Someren March 23rd, 2009, 11:23 AM Well NEOcene does output a 4:2:2 stream but I think all it really does is give you more headroom. HDV is 4:2:0 and even if it's converted to 4:2:2, it can't create color info that isn't there to start with.
I use Newtek's Speed edit NLE which has the ability to convert files to 4:2:2 and 4:4:4. It does give you more headroom for color correction, but again, doesn't create information that wasn't there to start with. Maybe NEOcene has a little more magic built in?
Scott Gold March 23rd, 2009, 11:34 AM Yep. I'm just hoping to be able to adjust the colors a little bit more before it becomes a pixel blizzard!
Marcel D. Van Someren March 23rd, 2009, 11:38 AM Cool. Looking forward to seeing the results. It would be interesting to see the same video after running it through NEOcene and then do a split screen to see if there is a visible difference between the two.
Scott Gold March 23rd, 2009, 03:47 PM Oh, I doubt if I'll re-capture all this footage and edit it again with NEOScene.
I'll probably shoot some local footage and then capture it both ways and then do a side-by-side. I'll post the results when done, should be fun to see the difference.
Scott Gold March 23rd, 2009, 10:32 PM I really should have put a better descriptor of what the video is really about.
Here it is anyway, although it is a bit late:
Inspired by U2's "The Joshua Tree", we set out to find the actual Joshua tree from the album photos, but we found a lot more than what we were just looking for...
Hint, it's near Death Valley.
Eduardo Miguel March 27th, 2009, 08:57 AM Beautiful video. For whatever reason, I found this video to be touching, emotional, and even spiritual... the U2 song along with the death of the tree.
Scott Gold March 27th, 2009, 09:26 AM Thanks Eduardo, that's a huge complement! I have to admit, I expected Death Valley to be bleak and barren, but it turned out to be filled with life and beauty. I'm going to be inspired by the place for years to come.
Thanks for watching!

Colin McCaffery May 20th, 2009, 05:30 AM This is a wonderful video, and is the first time I have been moved to comment on the few XH-A1 clips I have viewed!
Thank you so much for sharing it ...you have given me something to aspire to.
I hope it remains on Vimeo for some time to come, as I see it is not one of the films that it is possible to download. I would have loved to retain a copy for reference and ideas :)
Good Luck and Good Filming.
Colin.
Scott Gold May 20th, 2009, 09:04 AM Thanks Colin, I really appreciate your comments. I'll be leaving it on Vimeo for as long as they will let me. Thanks again for watching and good luck with your projects!
