My cousin has 40 Digital8 tapes but never watches them etc. I said since I have the GV-D200 I could import them to the computer for him and provide him with the footage on a hard drive for editing. What should I charge for this? I hear the rate for Tape to DVD is $10-$20/tape. This of course will produce ware on my rarely used GV-D200 (36 8mm tapes ran through it twice (that will teach me for import using the wrong settings).

Thanks all for the advice.

Do a google search for video transfer services in your area and you'll get an idea of what you can charge... the going rate.

40 tapes is not what I would call excessive wear; I wouldn't worry about it.

Why would he spend money for you to digitize something he never watches?

They're family, do it for free...

Or let them use your gear to do it.

I just did such a job. I charged $300 for 50 tapes. I thought that was on the high side but I'm nearing the end and I don't think I charged enough. I forgot 8mm tapes can hold up to 2 hrs, so that's 100 hrs of capture! I've been feeding tapes for over a week. In addition, I'm dealing with technical issues on his side. The end of this project can't come soon enough.
